Are TV extras meant to act, are they expected to show the appropriate body language with other TV extras in the scene OR should you just pretend to talk as per normal?
I'm a little confused by the question, but you are supposed to act / do whatever you are told for the scene. It may be having a fake conversation, it may be ordering a coffee before taking a seat, it could be interacting with the main cast, but just without talking. It all depends on the scene and how featured you are. Most of the time it is just walking or sitting, but it could be anything like crying or silent yelling. Heck I have had to play craps silently for one scene and mime throwing invisible dice...
