Nimzo-Indian Defense, Three Knights variation - Standard chess #49

- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- I played as black in this game, and opted for the the Nimzo-Indian Defense where both dark-squared bishops ended up being exchanged for a knight. Of the 2 exchanges, it was black's capture on c3 which produced structural damage. This would become a big focal point in the game. Could the doubled c-pawns be exploited? How might the value of the pieces, and the pawn majorities be influenced by this different structure? The Rapid time control for this game is 15 minutes with a 10 second increment.

On move 16 of the first game if bishop took on H3 wouldn't that 1. trade bishop for night 2. put you up a pawn and 3. severely damage white's kingside?
Oh nvm you saw it later xD commented to early
ChessNetwork @29:00 I did spot 20. ... Qg5, and later on the engine seems to think this is indeed a best move (I'm sure there are things that I'm missing, but the obvious threat would be 21. ... Nd3, and I couldn't figure out how white is supposed to address that threat)... I'm wondering: did you jusg miss Qg5 was an option? or did you see it but chose not to consider it because of something else (i.e. maybe sharper position and not much time left in the clock)? I'm just curious that you didn't even mention Qg5 on your thought process, and you did spend quite some time in that move 20.
thanks for your videos, Jerry, I really enjoy them a lot.
I love all of your videos Jerry, but I have to say the standard games are my personal favorites.
If i could play 3 moves in a row, i'd probably take the enemy king instead
I like these 15 minutes games most of all of the great chess you share with us. (I don't like blitz chess). Hearing in real time how a great chess player is thinking, or at least the parts of it that are relevant to the audience and practical to present. Maybe it's a very good idea to think out loud oneself while playing at the computer. To then review how things could've been done better in terms of real time thinking.
Thanks again for the excellent content. These Standard games are great. As others have mentioned its amazing how time flies. Another commute zips by.
Welcome! Thank you for watching 😎
Love this series, especially with the 15+10 time control now. this was a super interesting game to watch. keep up the great content!
I had a long day and am now settling in for some dinner and chess spectating. Thanks for posting, Jerry.
woah. 50mins that just flew by me at supersonic speed. Great content.
dont mean this in a douchey way and i may be wrong but i think there is no such thing as just mach speed by itself unless youre specifically referring to mach 1/2/etc.
Engineering student?
arnoldo escalante Not douchey at all! fixed it
arnoldo escalante actually, mach speed can really just refer to an unspecified mach or just mach (x) speed.
nah just into that kinda stuff
I play the Nimzo myself so this game was even more interesting for my than usually. Love the standard chess games and hear you think out loud. Thanks for uploading!
Big fan of the strategic play in this one. The series of moves for the knight getting to c5, consideration of light squared bishop placement, and timing the bishop sacrifice on the a-pawn were all very nice.
All of these chess videos are helping me to avoid all the obnoxious content on RUclips in favor of more chess :-D cheers jerry!
Watching these standard videos reminds me of watching Mr. Roger's Neighborhood - and I mean that in a good way. Thanks! :)
This video made me realize how much I want an ASMR chess channel
I love this videos, greatest way to learn, hearing all the thought process. Very entertaining, too.
My first viewing of one of your commentaries. I really liked following the actual thought process you had during the game. Much more helpful. However, would have preferred a game where your opponent actually initiated a strategy of their own. White played aimlessly and way below their rating.
43:02, we didn't know three years ago, how many times we will hear such a word construction by ChessNetwork after all these Magnus nicknames :)
Assign knights by rank (given they are at an outpost):
Rank 1: 1 pt.
Rank 2: 2 pt.
Rank 3: 3 pt. And so on
The exception is rank 7 and 8. On rank 7 a knight is worth 3 again (depending on the situation) and on rank 8 a knight is worth 1 point. This is because the knight becomes now unstable and is closer to the rim. :)
Great game, Jerry. Thanks for the video as always :)
I think that instead of pawn f5 you could have threatened mate with rook to h5. Idk maybe I missed a good reply.
Jerry, The knight maneuver to c5 worked well, but had you considered maneuvering it to the outpost on f4? Was just wondering, since the computer didn’t like Nb8 after d5, but thought Ne7 was more accurate. I thought maybe that’s because the Knight wants to end up on f4.
Jerry, I was so close to playing you in a lichess 3 minute tournament last night. I got 5th and you got 3rd and I was just hoping the whole time we would get paired.
Jerry: moves knight back home instead of to a5
also Jerry: a knight on a5 seems like a good idea rn
When I play the Nimzo-Indian I go b6 and the bishop is on Bb7. It's about stopping E4 if you can the knight is on e4 with f5 and d5 in. This works when the bishop is pinning the knight.
when queen was at h4 rock was already available in h file in one move so it could create problem for white
Hi Jerry,
I saw someone else comment this, but at move 20 you can take g2 with the bishop regardless - the bishop can't take because of Nd3 forking the rook and queen, and the king taking opens the kingside a frightening amount with the queen nearby. Do you think that's enough compensation for the bishop?
Great video as always, Jerry! I enjoy watching you play live on lichess but was wondering if you stream on youtube or twitch? Also at 34:15 before you played f5, do you think rook h5 is worth considering? Thanks!
Jerry are you planning to write a Chess book sometime?
Why would you not even consider 25...Rh5?and white is lost as your bishop is covering the h3 square. Your move f5 allows the rook to flush your queen away.
33:54 Wasn't there a Fork with knight f3 for white?
At the sacrifice you're considering at around the 24:00 minute mark, what of bishop takes h3, knight takes d4, queen to g4 pinning the pawn? then that opens an option for jerry to play knight to d3, overloading the white bishop?
Whats wrong with knight x d4 on move 10? does it not win a pawn?
21:29 why not bishopxh6?
Right? Lol
20:37
g2 is overloaded, so you could capture on h3.
33:23 Rf5 threatening pawn with queen seems to force Nb3
Hello chess network, why dont play against deferent youtubers in a tournament, and record it all, so we can see how defrent advanced players think during the same game,
@ 34:11 Why not 25 ... Rh5 ?
Thanks Jerry!!
jerry on move 10 before taking the knight w/bishop.. could you have not taken the pawn on d4 with the knight and if knight recaptured you could have taken back with the queen , thanks for all you do~! go to CN ''no matter what''!
rayclay2 No because the pawn on c3 could capture black’s knight instead, leading to a material deficit
rayclay2 taking the pawn on d4 is a blunder. if you take it on move 10 with the knight, the opponent would take your knight and If the queen takes the knight, there will be a tactic with bd3-bh7 winning the queen.
opps i meant on move 10 before he took the knight w/bishop
Is drHealusion the same dude who makes asphalt 8 videos??!
I don't know, why don't you find out??!
Thanks Man
At 20:04 whats about Bxh3?
Well, how is it possible that a 2200 elo rated player is not going to challenge that knight in c5??
Filippo Stella may be the points are lichess ratings not FIDE elo. Watching it is much easier than playing, I am very rusty but saw the dubious early moves.
Plz some advice 2 play well like u
Sir..B*H3 gh3
Chesswebsite Kerala yep, I was wondering why he didn't consider this.
Edit: never mind, he sees it a few moves later
Yes... there is A Zukertort steintiz game in which steinitiz missed the same Bh3
In the 25th move can’t u play Rh5
I think so, I saw the same. Forces Rook for bishop sacrifice. Alternatively, if f5 for escape, QxR.
Sorry, I meant f3, but I think f4 at least gives escape and keeps rooks paired. Not sure though, I'm no Master.
It's rare Jerry misses so many tactics, but I think he's just in positional chess mode. He would see these moves instantly in a bullet game.
Or, even at move 23. The engine picked it up but he clicked passed it.
36:39 if Nf3 Qd3 is mate lol
I thought 15+10 was classical, not rapid
lichess.org/blog/Wh9KWiQAAI5JrKVn/introducing-rapid-ratings
Im early Jerry! Yes!
like
16. ... Bxh3 ?
Edit: nvm
you are just not making sense.
Bob Ross of chess
20:04 why not win a pawn by bishop takes h3 ?
Edit:nvm you saw it !
More such videos are appreciated..
34:10 Why isn't Rh5 considered? Threatening mate and the only way to defend is for the white rook to block, then bishop takes rook wins the exchange and messes up the structure.
When your bishop was on h3 did you consider capturing on g2? Then bishop takes back and then knight d3? 29:00
Then Nxd3, black's knight is on the e5 square; black would be up a piece
Like very much your video playing chess, analyzing while playing.. more video like this please 😁
JERRY!!!!! have you had a chance to play 4 way chess yet??? If so how do you like it???
eLem3nT would love to see him play 4 way chess
The computer says move 17 for black the best move is b6, but I like the idea of a5 followed by a4 to secure the knight and using the bishop and knight duo to secure or at least coordinate on e4 and d3.
Standard chess, YAY!
36:23 Thought you were gonna resign by accident lmao
Mr.ChessNetwork.. I play the Nimzo often because I'm looking for something more dynamic than the KID when playing blitz. However I've played the KID much more otb, in classical, with decent results, and I don't know half the theory on the Nimzo.. Nor have I even played it in a rated otb classical game yet! I'm still studying it some before making the plunge! Needless to say, I feel like I'm in foreign territory in blitz when I play the Nimzo. I digress.. Listening to you analyze in this game REALLY brought me some good insight into the Nimzo, thank you!
I'll caveat this with.. In the beginning you chose 4... 0-0 rather than d5, which is probably more conducive to a longer time control at not getting into trouble, and in the faster time controls, d5 maybe would be more appealing right? - I'd love to see many games from you both playing 4... 0-0 AND 4... D5!!
In your move 10, why not Nxd4? With his bishop blocking his Queen you come out ahead on that exchange. By taking the Knight on c3 first, yes you double pawns, but it provides support for d4 with the doubled pawn.
I haven't gotten to the post-game evaluation in the video yet, but I saw a tactic at 21:30 to play bishop takes h3, with the thinking that the bishop can't be recaptured because the knight would be unprotected. You were dying for a bishop for knight exchange, and you'd also win a pawn. I'll probably see that in the video and feel stupid afterwards, but whatever
Lmao a minute and a half later, you're talking about it
jerry , I think you missed a sac on move 16. Instead of playing Bd7, you could have played 16.Bxh3 then if 17.gxh3 Qxf3 ! winning the knight ?
At 34:15, I'm curious why Jerry didn't play 25. ... Rh5 threatening mate and winning a rook?
Move 25 you played p-f5. If you had of played rook - h5, white would have to give his rook for your bishop on the spot.
At 29:43 the best move i could come up with was bishop takes pawn at g2. And then when his bishop takes your bishop, knight d3
He doesn't really nees to take with his bishop back though, he could take with his king, the best black has there is a perpetual.
move 13th. Can you explain why not knight e7? it seems logic for me
what about the 25 black move Rh5 searching for mate
why didnt you e7 on move 13?
Very 007, Jerry. Dr ? No !
17. ...BxP!
Can anyone explain to me why, when he goes back to Nb8 (at 14:14), he didn't even considered going to Ne7?
Defending the d pawn whilst also double defending f4 & g3?
I'm less than a newbie, so feel free to take the piss of this comment, but I don't understand why he didn't even remotely considered Ne7.
Thanks for your understanding.
Oh well, Stockfish says Jerry's move was an inaccuracy and the move I've suggested was the best one at 50:45 .
I now feel very smug cause I did comment during play :)
This 1st game is awesome. Love how you're doing all your thinking out loud and explaining even the things that are simple for you but advanced for us :)
25. ... Rh5?
Why didn't you take the pawn at 8:50
The d pawn with the f knight to clarify
white knight takes d4. if queen takes, bh2 discovered attack and black queen is hanging
I thought I had a hair on my phone, I tried to brush off your avi like 3 times before I read your name.
@28:10 was it possible to sack the bishop on g2? If BxB then Nd3 forks the queen and an attack on f2. On a king recapture instead, f5 followed by Rf6 feels very fast. Any bishop move is subject to a knight invasion and the white Queen is really far away.
Thanks for your Uploads Jerry, I'm not gonna give you suggestion which computer gives me for this game because this is how natural intelligence works but i really want to know that if knight was challenged then how you'll proceed for position?? Keep it up man, appreciate your work.
beautiful end game love your videos.Must learn to place my knights. on good squareslike you .Thank you keep them coming!!!!!
what about at 1:33 knight to E4? attack the pinned piece, capture it, then after pawn recaptures you take the pawn and fork the king and the rook? any problems with this?
Edit - the white bishop would have a problem with this.
37:14 "Maybe i'm giving up this square for the queen, but... i have this."
-last words of a chess player
21:28 I think capturing pawn with bishop then capturing knight would be great
Isn't this called the Kasparov Variation? Well, for all of one move, anyway...
Wassup Jerry please upload more of ur games I like watching them
I found Ncd3 was good move on move 24 after Ree3, 1 match
Finally a rapid game.. Thank you Jerry!
The variety is AWESOME!!!
I just knew he'd miss bxh3 -_-
Jerry please play 4 way chess...
Knight b8, setting up for the next game xD

how does he have light blue arrows? i know how to get red yellow green and dark blue but not light blue, does anyone know how?
Royalty There is an Add On called Stylus, with which you can modify the colours of the drawn arrows and circles! I am not sure what Chess Network uses, but it's what I am using to have beautiful blue standard arrows ;)

At 29:21, could we play Qg5 or Qg4 to prepare for a Nd5 fork on the next move? How does white refute?
