Btw, this competition allows a small amount of audio editing like you saw here, because the goal is to get the best possible quality out of beatbox and show whats possible. To push the boundaries basically. I totally agree with what you said, that a person instantly thinks about what sounds might be edited as well. But as long as it is only reverb or panning and such its ok I think. There was a video by Remix called Insane, where he clearly edited a sound and it destroyed the credibility of the whole track imo. And it especially turns away new listeners to beatbox. But this competition handles it better.

They said they were going to make a music video and there would be visual effects coinciding with the audio effects, but last minute decided it didn’t work with the video quality, so they ended up uploading it, but didn’t remove the audio effects.
Sad thing is it’s not that edited, it’s just the transitional moment when he’s speaking they put an effect on his voice. But when he’s repeating “Fire” it’s all him using the air in his mouth to add the extra layer to his voice. But the previous effect on his voice makes people question the whole thing.

    • @set_blocks
      @set_blocks 2 года назад

@@YnEoS10 Thats a rly strange choice on their part. Yeah, I know that the sounds in the drop are real (and awesome), but the voice before it being edited makes it look fake, youre right.

What amazes me and shows the sheer determination for perfection is how no one batters a eyelid if a singer uses autotune and its widely accepted even by the performers themselves, But in beatboxing it is seen differently and i think this maybe due to the art form still not being in the mainstream and is a still got heavy underground roots. Im probably wrong but this is the way i see it.ESH🔥👊

The judging criteria each give either one or no point. So the possible scenarios are:
    - one of the competitors gets a point and the other doesnt
    - both get one point
    - or none get a point
    for each criteria.
They also make a video for each battle, going over their decisionmaking and revealing the winner.
    The criteria are:
    - Originality
    - Pitch & Timing
    - Complexity
    - Enjoyment of Listening
    - Video
    - Audio
    - Battle
    - User Voting (which video gets more likes)
    - Extra point (Chezame and Sxin both have an extra point to give if they find it fitting)
    Hope this helps! :)

It’s better to think of it as a music video competition, less about skill and more about who makes the most entertaining video and composition. I’d prefer live audio too, but it’s a fun concept to get more beatboxers to up their audio and video production, and they get a good bit of prize money for competing which is unfortunately still uncommon in the scene.

This video was a watershed moment for the comp and for Dropical. It really shows what can be accomplished as a piece of art whilst also showcasing an insane level of beatboxing and battling. Its basically set the standard for the rest of the comp. It also shows what dropical can do with good audio and video, which he hasnt had in the past. BBU is really changing the beatbox landscape..

  • @LaganusWrex
    @LaganusWrex 2 года назад

So this competition is really about pushing the boundaries and turning beatbox into a household musical genre instead of just the raw underground where it spent many years. They're pretty much all prerecorded but part of the criteria is you must be able to perform it live. I can totally understand where you're coming from but when you hear tracks like Den's video against Zero, you'll get a real idea of what this platform is capable of. Yes, I'm biased cause I love Den, lol! It's all love for the talent either way. Love your videos Cliff and I'm STILL subscribed! Keep em coming!

  • @duccmanz

Finally, Dropical surprised me the most in this battle! Btw, BBU22 is pretty much a music video competition. You can edit your sounds as much as you want as long as it still sounds like beatbox. Points are graded on audio and visuals (as well as the normal points, like complexity, battle, etc), which is different from other online competitions. Also, there is no time limit.

Dropical went off in the battle department. He said kick you booty and you won’t believe it because it was a reference to one of wing’s vids. And when he was in the black and white room, it was the same room that wing was in in his wildcard. Also wing did use editing on his beatboxing.

The BBU contest is actually kind of the first of its kind in allowing this type of editing. Part of the criteria is actually audio production amd video quality. The producer who helped assemble dropicals video was available for free to all contestants. Wing definitely had some editing and effects but more subtle and paired with a significantly more subtle video. They were allowed to do multiple takes and pick and choose to make it sound as perfect as it can be. Some effects are allowed as well provided that it was all still clearly done with vocals. The BBU announcement is on chezames page where they explain the rules.
There are artists out there that make beatbox music videos (ie showgo) and they took that style and turned it into a competition. Its basically a battle of the music videos. There are points given for originality, pitch/timing, video, audio, battle, and enjoyment of listening.

  • @c0racle937
    @c0racle937 2 года назад +1

Yeah the whole point of the competition is to explore the potential of not just doing everything raw. Obviously we haven’t seen all videos yet but most if not all of them are going to be pre recorded, edited and then lip-synced. Even if you can’t notice. Even if they have a mic in the video.

    They are looking for:
    - timing
    - techniques
    - variations
    - creativity
    - structure
    - design
    - video quality
    - audio quality
    Participants are allowed:
    - no time limit
    - they can use audio fx's as long as these fx's don't ruin the rawness of the beatbox material itself
    - lip sync
    - can get help for the video/audio editing by an pro editor named David
The judgement categories are (one point for each):
    1. Originality
    2. Pitch & timing
    3. Complexity
    4. Enjoyment of listening
    5. User voting (the higher number of likes for each battle video decides this point)
    6. Video
    7. Audio
Additional points: Sxin and Chezame each of them can also give 1 extra point

The aim of this competion is to battle using actual well put together videos, like mainstream music videos, but still keep it simple. They can use small amounts of audio manuplation to make the video sound better, nothing flashy. There is also no time limit. This is to push the limits of beatboxing and the community as a whole. I hope this helps Cliff, have a great day, we love you.

The thing is for BBU there are a lot of points for video and audio which is why it doesn't sound like pure beatbox anymore but it is something else than the usual competition so it's cool. Also the one who edited the video and sound was the editor of sxin and Chezame so they know if the rules were broken.

I love this routine and as a bonus he threw a couple doubles in there with "keep playin with your trumpet" as my fav. If you want to see an unedited version, he used a bit of this against Napom in Beatbox to World, but I think he has nailed it down since then. Remix dealt with exactly what you were talking about in his Fire routine. It was super crazy, but they tossed in an echo effect on "fire" and it was cool, but def impacted how I felt about it at the time as a bb noob. With this format, i expect it since they relaxed the rules to allow some audio compression and effects. Can't wait to hear the next Dropical round!

Something else important to note is that Dropical used Sxin and Chezame’s editor, David, to do the mixing and mastering of the video and audio, which was also available for anyone to use for free for any round in this competition :) definitely different from the typical battle style that you react to, but I think you’ll grow to love it, especially once you get to the battle between Den vs Zero 👀

The editing of video and audio is pretty much no-holds-bar when it comes to restrictions. Sxin and Chezame allow pretty much anything as long as it doesn't have multiple sounds at once, you can manipulate the sounds, as long as it manipulates straight beatboxing rather than layering sounds at the same time(ex. Hearing multiple snares or basses at the same time that cant physically be done at the same time). And just to clarify, every single beatboxer in this competition so far has had extremely edited videos and audio(compared to regular beatbox videos at least), and while Wings video looks live, there are multiple quick edits and parts where you can tell its lip-synced. It allows for better capture of the audio so every BBU round is lip-synced. So if you really dont like edits in beatboxing then honestly the BBU may not be for you, its not a regular battle with the showcase of showmanship and raw beatboxing talent. Its also a music video competition and overall enjoyable video making. While its true some more novice beatbox viewers may not understand everything in these videos, they are more consumable for the general public and can honestly be a great introduction to beatboxing imo. With all that said, great reaction and I hope we get to see you check the other BBU videos out soon!

I shared more of the routines in BBU to friends than like maybe overall in 2 years, because it is more relatable for people, to listen and watch Beatbox. Wing also uses soundset on his round. Even Dropical is dissing him for that. In my opinion a well deserved win for him.
