In this week’s episode we will be discussing the strange disappearance of the Roanoke Colony, also known as the Lost Colony, where 112 settlers on Roanoke Island vanished in 1587 without leaving a trace.

I think the colonists went to live with the Croatoans.
This has always been an interesting story. Although the eventual destruction of this settlement probably cames from a variety of factors. Not unlike the failure of the first Jamestown Colony.
Thanks So Much! Always been interested in this. I live a few hrs away from there and have always wondered what really happened. Excellent Video and Job As Always, Sir
Maybe the majority of the dead were buried at sea, while the others remaining joined the natives. Thanks, Luke, for another fascinating mystery.
I think they relocated & eventually assimilated with the local population. I'd really love to learn more, perhaps the recent excavations will uncover more clues.
Thanks, Unsolvable, for another interesting video. See ya next week!
Nah they all died, it was proven fact
I always thought the most likely theory was that they assimilated with the natives on Croatoan. As for not leaving any parchment note behind, well it could have vanished by the time White got there.
North Carolina like most states that border the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico sometimes get huge hurricanes. In 1989 hurricane Hugo devastated the Carolinas and into the Virginias. These storms have hit the easr coast and gulf states for centuries. My theory is that a hurricane came through, thus causing the disappearances. The storm surge would have swept people, animals and anything not bolted down out into the Atlantic, hence the houses being "taken down" and everything in disarray. The survivors, if any, assimilated into the Croatoan Tribe. I love history.
At Jamestown the colonists did not mark the graves...just recently they are discovering the graves of these colonists....I'm thinking the same for Roanoke Colony
It was great to listen this story. Awesome job on video. Thank you
Sorry i am later, my uncle passed away last week. Still mourning and upset, but want to give you my support. Take care. Thanks
@@ELKE- I am so sorry for your loss, please take care of yourself. Sending a big hug.

Thank you for notice my comment here Nicole. It has been hard for the whole family, he was only 54. Covid19, too much for his heart. Hope all is well with you, and your family. Take care🙏💙 Stay safe
@@ELKE- I am truly sorry, that's so sad , I also lost my uncle in March but he was in his late 80's. Fifthy four is way too young to be taken from your family.
But I'm sure he'll always be in your heart, as is mine.
Please take care of yourself, I enjoy reading your positive and gentle comments you leave people.

Thank you so much dear Nicole. So sorry for your loss also. It doesn't matter the age they are gone, like your dear uncle, the pain is the same and always will be missed... Will pray for you and your family. Sorry, i didn't know. Your comments are truly nice aswell. Wish a nice Friday. I go for dinner now, 7:40pm in Germany now, then do my inhale: bronchitis very bad again, too cold here. Take care! Stay safe girl🙏💙
Why would you leave your wife and daughter behind? I've never understood this part.
Another good one Luke! Thank you!
Hell yeah! A mystery from my home state
Another theory is that the settlers fled, attempting to reach Croatoan for safety, but didn't make it. The Dare stones, supposedly carved by White's daughter, Eleanor Dare are proposed as evidence of this. They record her daughter, Virginia's birth (and subsequent death on a separate stone), as well as their travels south down the eastern seaboard. The authenticity of the Dare stones has been called into question, but never successfully refuted.
I think the tribe came along, offered them to come live with them and intermarried into their tribe. It would have probably been that they were living peacefully if he had made it to the island to see they were. Maybe they didn't have time to do so, the native tribe gave them a time frame and so they left quickly.
Aliens aren’t real but if they were, they probably wouldn’t want to be blamed for every disappearance!
Well said, my fav comment of the day :)
Sounds like they moved with the natives.
great video ty
Is it possible to do genealogy tracing to see if there are any relatives of his not known?
The Indians they befriended didn’t know where the colony went??
I don't believe John White was able to make contact with them again. and after his passing, Walter Raleigh had little interest in finding them. as long as it was believed they were alive, that was enough for him to keep his claim to the land. he didn't want to search in case they were found dead.
@@UNSOLVABLE well, that just opened up more questions 😅 but thank you very much for the response.
So the natives were. lacking in hospitality
The least likely is the most likely
Aliens then!! 😜
@@UNSOLVABLE ha ha funny
So..his boat was so battered he had to abandon his mission to find his family after his first attempt, yet, he managed to sail the entire way back to England with..presumably the same ship??
What am I missing here?
@teaspoons of peanut butter exactly what I was wondering!! Suspicious!😒
@@carolynross1248 right?! Bit fishy
I have heard that the boat did not belong to him. The decision to leave was not White’s decision. Check out Buzzfeed Unsolved episode on Roanoke. It has a lot of info and is also very humorous.
I hope that they integrated with the locals and moved on to have happy lives.
Perhaps the carved message was to put any potential rescuers off the scent.
They must have felt abandoned and desperate.
Thanks for your work, good wishes 🙏🏼 ❤️ 🍀 🗺️
Hi Janet!
Yes, they did not want to be found.
I think they did. Years back I watched a PBS NOVA episode that tested DNA taken from locals in the area of Roanoke with ones back in Britain. There was a match.
John's poor wife!! His poor daughter.... 😮😨... Imagine how lost lonely and abandoned his poor wife must have felt when he never came back
This is one of my favourite head scratchers. I like to believe that they Integrated with the Chroatone islanders.
I mean, it's all but confirmed that they fell on hard times and the nearby tribe took them in. That tribe has had members with blue eyes and/or blonde hair ever since the colony "disappeared."
Great. It’s unsolvable time. Thanks.
And not too gruesome.
Greetings Xxx 🙏🏼 ❤️ 🍀 🗺️ 🏴💐
Lol I'm sure you were sincere but I cant help but read your comment in a dry sarcastic tone
Hi there Ayape!
@@bettyjames4155 Hi Betty. Nice story.
Maybe they build a boat and tried to get back hone. Maybe some went to live with the natives, others branched out on their own. After 2 years they were abandoned and had no reason to stay. Also, a Viking ship may have picked them up.
🤣👍🏼
I believe that years later, other European settlers met blue eyed Native Americans, who were believed to be the descendants of the colonists and the Croatoans.
Or the Spanish could of taken them...
I've heard about this case on a Tudor history channel I belong to. Its interesting to hear about it again. I think they relocated to find food in desperation.
Interesting... maybe they wanted to get lost on purpose tho lol
Maybe lol
A paper explaining everything could have been missed, or something else could have happened to it in the years between when it was written and the return of the sailors. Or, the weather was becoming an urgent matter when the colonists were invited to live with the Croatoans. You can come, but we have to leave now. I did read or watch a video about this in the past year. I don't remember the specifics, but I think there was more evidence than some pottery fragments that lead to the conclusion that the colonists had lived with the natives. Interesting!
Yeah, disappearance of Roanoke is one of least mysterious mysteries. Either left to join a tribe willingly or as prisoners. Bred into tribe one way ot the other.
The most plausible theory imo would be they took off to another part of the land in search of food, etc. possibly guided by the croation tribes and inscribed where they were headed. My guess is that after years of riley not returning, the colony ended up doing their own thing, maybe even spreading farther inland.
This is such a fascinating story to me. So many theories
With the extreme improvements in DNA this could possibly be solved.....hardest part would be finding descendants to test to see if they integrated with the natives! Recently bought a book on this subject while in the Outerbanks of NC and VA.
Excellent presentation and top quality content, I have binged all your vids tonight👍 - sun is coming up 🌞🌞🌞😬😬😬
A mystery whose solution has been lost to time. Thanks, Luke, for another well presented video !
I really think their were kidnapped and hold hostage . That's what I think I don't know about other people.
If they tell you what happened, they'd have to tell you the natives are brown skin people who look like me... they don't want to do this so, it's a mystery...
They didn't want to be found. They wanted to stay with their native family.
No one said the Spanish could of turned up as the settlement wouldn't know of the war
Yes aliens lol😂😂
Such an enduring mystery! Thanks so much for this fascinating content 😎 Your hard work is much appreciated! 💞
I thought they all migrated to Croatoan Island, to live with the natives?
One of my favorites. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Good one! Thanks. 👍🏻
I'm from eastern NC so I grew up hearing all about this. There's a really neat outdoors reenactment play that they have daily during the tourist season. I highly suggest going if you're ever out on the Outer Banks.
I recently discovered your channel and have become enchanted and mesmerized by your content. The background music and your voice are captivating indeed. I hope you continue as I do search for you weekly for new content. Thank you so much.....
I very curious what happened to them😂👍.This case i don't know ❤‼‼
they Left a message carved in a tree and palisade stating the name Croatoan and an island not far away artifacts were found. there was also a rock found with old English writing and it said many of hence forth went to heaven there were seven of us captured by savages this rock is now in a museum check wave news aka 10 on your side and their discover of the artifacts and the archeologists opinion
Speaking of Aliens..maybe a future Travis Walton story?
Mayve the Natives i could understand them when that ws them it was their land
Yes maybe they lived with the natives but it's really misterious
also I should add there's a DNA 🧬 test to see if you're a descendant of the colony members
I hope for them.I love your channel 👍❤‼
But no signs of the battle? 🤔🤔
There might have been graves but maybe they got washed away. The Outer Banks gets hit really hard by hurricanes sometimes. Sometimes back to back. The Outer Banks are only ,at most places, like a mile wide. At least these days they are. Erosion is a big problem there. The giant dunes are disappearing at an alarming rate. Mind you that still doesn't explain everything but maybe it'll provide a little more insight to the mystery of you know a little more about the location from a local-ish perspective. I don't live right on the coast but it's only an hour or two away so we always vacationed there a lot.
this is true. A lot could have happened during the 2 years White was away in England.
Look up Scott Dawson. Your unsolved just became solved.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have a read 👍
👍👍👍

I have tried to watch this 3 times and there is NO sound. None. Help!
this is so strange, I have hear other mention this in some of our other videos. maybe try opening from a different link, i.e. via the channel, or via the playlist, or via a search.
@@UNSOLVABLE Finally got it right. Enjoyed the video. Interesting.
they may have integrated with the croatoans after that long.
Fascinating!
Something a little more less overplayed would be nice Unsolvable
