I test drove this car and I completely disagree with some points in this review. The level of noise on a highway is lower than most other cars in this class, also the suspension is one of the best I've driven.
Very good review! I am going to pick up mine tomorrow (my third white BMW 1 series with M package in a row) and it's great that not everyone likes it. So I don't have to see the same car all the time when driving. I don' t care about FWD or "only" 140 hp since I drive 90% in the city.

You mean like every car in it's class? Getting to 43K euro is easy. The previous 1 series wasn't exactly cheap either. Where I work, this new one is actually cheaper to lease than the old one. Also define least further developed? You don't even explain what you mean by that. This car is miles ahead of the old 1 series. Most of you dislike it for not having RWD. Which let's be fair, is still very subjective and doesn't really matter for normal driving. And yes, I loved the way the old one handled. The DC transmission is the worst part of this car...Reminds me of DSG. Which is generally alright... until you floor it. Even then I think that the pros outweigh the cons. It is just a more rounded car that does everything well. And as far as FWD normal hatchbacks go this handles really well. Just test drive it.
You ended rhe review with a good point: premium brands no longer bring high end stuff to the entering segments, what do you get here that you won't get in the new Clio or 208 for example, half that price ??

@@MarekDrives Honestly I don't think your are missing anything on subjects level. Just some more details in general. I understand that long/ very long video's may be/become boring and it's difficult to find that golden middle. It's hard to improve when a certain level of perfection is already reached xD Maybe some interesting stuff on safety features, some cool quirks ( I'm sure every car has it). Also your opinion on cars music systems and rattling sounds when music is playing loud (if present/abscent), for example. Some important standard cars equipment could be interesting as well. Sorry can't give you much tips, but still I tried :-)
Yes, safety systems are hard to demonstrate. The last time I tried it with Volvo XC60, Volvo said (and that's the OFFICIAL reply) I should not put their safety systems to the test, because they work only, when they have to :)
In the Skoda Octavia the wipers also stop with the start stop system. Many cars do. So this is definitely not just BMW thing.... A lot or road noise? Of course in a c-segment car with 18 inch wheels. I have also test driven the 118i M-Sport and it was more than quiet enough. My corolla also has 18 inch wheels and it is way louder than this one (which is one of the reasons why I am getting rid of it). If you don't like the loud road noise get 17 inch wheels or something. Most smaller cars are loud on big wheels and rougher surfaces. There is not much you can do about that. Even the Mazda 3 on the 18 inches makes a lot of road noise. And that car is known for having a relatively quiet cabin. The engine reminded me of a VW 1.0 TSI with a bit more punch and a slightly nicer sound. Which is well... I am not sure. Kind of neutral about it. The biggest mistake IMO is that they went to a dual-clutch AT. The time it needs to shift down when you floor it is pretty long. Otherwise it is smooth Overall I think the old 118i is more fun, but for everyday use this one is way better. There is just no arguing that. Unless your daily commute is composed of almost only twisty mountain/country roads and you don't care about the interior and tech.
People who claim that they can't tell the difference between FWD and RWD probably can't tell whether they're being pulled or pushed along by the car either...
its funny that BMW made the new 1st series with FWD as an excuse to increase the space for rear passengers and the space for legs for rear passenger are still very limited!
OK for city driving but when u get on to highways and such the smaller engine really has to work extra, also smaller engine = less torque, sometimes u have to rev more to gain the same as in a larger engine, e.g 1.5 L 118i vs 2.0 L 120i, generally 120i will always drink more but only slightly so, and you can drive on highways without sacrificing as much fuel... Maybe stage 1-2 the 118i and it'll be more efficient at higher speeds, of course it has to be done correctly so the engine doesn't lose longevity
Im Happy i just bought a 2014 model of this car! With rearwheel drive and bigger engine XD although i like the digital speedo, and led lights on this one
