  • Cross bedding is a very common feature of sedimentary rocks, from the metre-scale dune-forms of the soutren Old Red Sandstone, to river and delta sets in Torridon Sandstone, to current (trough) cross bedding in Cambrian and Dalradian quartzites, to ripple cross bedding common in many of the sandy and slaty sequences of the Carboniterous. The cross bedding exposed here in the valey of the Nidd in Harrogate shows very well the alternating depositional and erosional features which define cross bedding and show both the way up of the beds and teh direction of the current which produced the beds.
