Pretty cool looking bowl Phil. I have not turned Apricot either. For sure it does looks like it likes to crack. But like you said a lot of fruit woods do. I have some Pear from and Plum from my neighbor. Should be close to dry but afraid of it cracking once I start turning it. If you had surgery 35 years ago for your back I am guessing you must have had issues for a long time after the Army. I have an injury from the Army that happened in 1968. Slowly over the years it has gotten worse but other things that old age brings has been added to it. The reason for my wrist strap. But that helps a lot. I may have to dig around in the fruit wood area now after watching this one. Great job buddy! Gary
Thanks, Gary! Wow, your casual observation has got me thinking. I think with age, my memories have condensed into only the good times. Yeah, I had all sorts of back pain I had forgotten about! Couldn't walk slowly or stand around. If I did, I had to find a wall to lean against and slowly slide down, knees bent, and just crouch there for five minutes before I could proceed. Spent many nights sleeping in a recliner or on the couch with my arm up on the back. Only way I could relieve the pressure. Still, I rode motorcycles, on road and off, played sports and coached, camped, etc. Just learned to live with it, I guess. Then one day, I had to get out of bed by just sliding off the side to crawl around. Finally found a good surgeon that fixed me up. It did take three operations but I've been normal, since. First surgery was in '86 and last was in '90. I was off work almost that whole time. Man, I don't know if I should say thanks for the memories, or what! LOL! Well, I guess if you were injured in the army in '68, you know what I'm talking about. I'm glad you found a way to deal with it all these years and, it doesn't seem to have slowed you down much! Good for you, buddy! 😊
Dang I had no idea you had to go through so much. Sorry about that. Backs are a whole different thing and can really slow you down. Your sure back now doing what you love. Like riding E-bikes and wood turning of course. My hand has had pain with bending and less movement in bending as well for 56 years. YIKES that's a long time ago. I was told that if it got really bad they could fuse it in place. No thanks I will work with it. Besides old age has taken away a lot of movement with all my joints LOL. Gary
Good Day 🌅, Phil, Great looking 👀 peace ☮️ of Art, 🖼️, 🥣🍑🪶, I think I was given some fruit wood, about 2 years ago, in had got a lot. Cracks and worm holes 🕳️ in them, when I finally get round to them I was thinking of putting resin in them, been trying to fit dust collection on my jointer, and planer , it was 200ml D , as I used to have a very large extraction system in my workshop back in the UK, so I’ve been trying to get some 200 diameter pipework down to 100, , As the dust extraction system is a lot smaller, hoping to fit something up over the bed of the lathe as well, keep up the great work, stay safe on that trike , No doing drifting or burnout, 😂, from Deuce Dude 😂,
Beautiful piece Phil. Happy turning my friend. Still trying to save up for a new Lathe here. My shop Got flooded out twice in two weeks, and I'm still trying to be positive about the situation I'm in right now. Happy turning to All that still can turn beautiful artwork. I'm Lost. ❤
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I live on a hillside with a ditch behind my shop. Whenever we get more than 3" of rainfall in a small period of time. It overcomes the ditch and runs underneath the wall and straight out of the overhead door. It's actually a garage but the bank of the hillside is too close to actually pull a vehicle into it. The garage was built a long time ago and the hillside has since slid down to where you can't park inside. So it's my shop now. We've had almost 10" of rain in about 2 weeks time and the ground just can't handle anymore rain. I do however live close to the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. Just not close enough to get River flooding.
@@edwardhand7070 That must be awful to have that to deal with during the rainy season. I suppose you have considered all options. Around here, we have something called Surface Water Management and a department that deals with just such situations. Everyone pays a tax for it every year whether they are affected by it or not. Seems they could dig the ditch deeper or build a levy or come up with some other way to divert the water runoff. Best of luck, my friend!
Every time you got close to the bark I thought it would come flying off. But you did it and got it to hold. The grain on the inside of this bowl is gorgeous. I really like this apricot owl. Thanks for the show. Joel
I received a bunch of firewood. Watching this I think it had two very nice chunks of apricot. Everything about it looks identical to what you started with. I’ve turned one piece and had identical cracks. Thank you for sharing this one.
I love the diversity of grain directions in crotch pieces. My style of bottoms , I remove the tenon completely for a more flat center or slight dome , and shallower foot rim . Another of your beautiful bowls from odd lumpy bits of wood
I can’t wait til I get my shop set up like I want it and can try to make a beautiful piece of art from what I’ve learned watching your videos… hopefully I will be able to make something half as beautiful one day
There’s another beauty. I’ll go along with you on it looking like the spine. I have had five back surgeries all my L vertebrae’s are now fused. Thank God for talented surgeons. Also thanks to you for entertaining us.
That is a new one for me never seen Apricot turned before but like fruit woods really nice the crotch obviously lifted the piece lovely colours and grain patterns, good job Phil. 😁
Really beautiful, Phil. And I learned something new tonight with the marking being called a " feather." So glad to know it has a name. I had a feather in a piece of Maple I did recently and did not know what it was! You are always a good teacher with big things and small. Have a great weekend.😊
A lovely warm colour to that heartwood, Phil, and the finish makes the most of it. Unfortunately Toni fell asleep (it’s midnight here in the UK) so I’ll have to watch again in the morning 😃. Best wishes always.
Never gets old seeing you work though the process and describing each step. You are a wonderful teacher. Keep up the good work. Great looking bowl by the way!
0:15. "Ooh, apricot: lovely tree, delightful flowers; wonder what the wood looks like" 23:00 (or thereabout), "Yes, it also is all that I had hoped it would be." What lovely grain and lovely colors. And, my mom says, "Thanks for reminding us that there is beauty is everyday things."
Many comments about the dust, Deirdre. To be honest, I don't think I even noticed it. And, I didn't see it in editing the video, either. Strange. I'm glad you and your mom like it, thank you! 😀
Thank You Phil, Thank You Mark & Wife...Apricot looks like a good solid piece.... I have an Apricot tree but zero Apricots because my resident Squirrels sit in my huge Oak waiting for me to go inside, ugh!!!... VERY nice looking turning today. I have never before seen an Apricot Bird's feather BUT now I have... Until next time.... TM
Not a wood turner here, but I love your calm process. Watching while I knit. 😉 Makers, hurrah!😊
I’m glad you enjoy the process, Nan! 😀 YES! Makers rule!

Are you near a river, Edward? The flooding must be awful and very hard to deal with. Hopefully things will improve, shortly! 😊

So close! I'm glad it stayed, Joel. Thank you! 😀
The apricot turned out beautiful. Nice save on the bark. I really like how the sides of the bark are shiny like the wood but the edge is natural.
Thank you very much, Carmen! 😀
I received a bunch of firewood. Watching this I think it had two very nice chunks of apricot. Everything about it looks identical to what you started with. I’ve turned one piece and had identical cracks. Thank you for sharing this one.
