This is so helpful! thank you so much for sharing all of this. i'm pretty new to proxies in davinci resolve, I think I get what your system is, but when you go to export, on your end you just link the proxies in the project to the full quality files on your SSD? if you have a video on that specifically let me know! again, thanks so much for sharing 🙌🏻
Hey There So my computer has all the original files linked. And my assistant editors have the proxies linked. Resolve actually saves separate file paths for each user opening the Resolve projects. So it's pretty dynamic and we can back and forth edit without relinking between proxies and raws, it just works 💪
Brilliant. Thanks for this! I'm stepping into this workflow and have been having some trouble with GDrive. You've given me the confidence to keep going with it and iron out the kinks.
Awesome, just as a quick note, since I've made this video, I've had a chat with a few people, and it seems like there may be less issues using a google drive for business solution. This costs a specific amount per month per user, but if reliability is number 1, it may be worth investigating.
Great video. I have a few questions: - I know you said you have looked at "a lot" of alternatives. Can you tell us whether you looked at Resilio Sync, and if so, where it fell short? (Resilio is peer-to-peer, with no cloud, but it seems to work pretty well for me? - Did you try syncing the project files in Google Drive directly to skip the Black Magic Cloud altogether? I assume that would only work when the other person(s) had it closed, but were there other drawbacks?
Great questions Ralph 1 - So I haven't tried Resilio Sync, just had a quick look at online articles it looks like a pretty solid solution though. 2 - No - and I wouldn't recommend skipping blackmagic cloud for project files. Just by the complex nature of project files, it's much better to use blackmagic's dedicated server for this. There's lots of little nuances which are amazing (such as saving seperate file paths for each user connected). And if it's just the project files you want to sync - you can easily get away with the $5-$10 a month subscription.
I barely know how to do it myself! But I think I can give a go teaching it! First step will be cleaning up the spaghetti node tree before I share the insides of it.🤣
2 people / both have a google drive account - one is paying (2 TB) the other one only basic free version with 15GB. So both need black magic cloud and only one has to pay for ONE project library to start?
Hey Orson, Great video! Curious to see if this resolves this problem or if you've seen this before: We have project database library sitting on Google Drive and not on Black Magic Cloud. It shows up for both of us (yay!), but the problem is that the linked GDrive assets in each project reference my Google Drive folder string "/Users/MYUSER/Library/CloudStorage/GoogleDrive-MY_EMAIL_ADDRESS/..." - Are you also editing with the assets directly out of drive like this or do you drag your OL-0045 folder onto a identically named root folder on both of your machines? Or Does Black Magic Cloud somehow reference the correct linked assets and this is not a concern? Currently, we're going to have to relink files each time we open a project and that seems like a large waste of time. Any advice would be appreciated!
Hey Madeline, hmmm, I think Blackmagic cloud sorts this out (it creates different file paths for each user). So I do have to relink media files when it's first shared between my editor and I. But after the first relink it works perfectly fine.
I do almost the same thing, however I skip the black magic cloud bit. I just make sure to ctrl+E every time i end an editing session. If I then send the edit over to someone or open it on my laptop on the go, I just make sure to import the project file.
That definitely works as well! We just send so many project files around, we find the $10 a month saves so many headaches it was just the cleaner option to choose. Everyone's situation is different. I would be curious to know, do you use a google business account for G drive? We've had some people report issues using the regular G Drive accounts.
I feel a little dumb asking this and I think I already know . But from the editors view .... The proxies already have to be associated with the project ? Like you can't start a new project with proxies and then re-link it to the main footage ?? The footage needs to be associated with the project ?? See what I'm trying to say? I'm having a hard time explaining it ..?? Would love to see what the project looks like from the remote editors point of view without the full resolution footage working with proxies . I assume that you just re-link the proxies without the main footage just like you would if you had the main footage . But again I guess the real question is : .. Can you start a project with just the proxies and then re-link it to the full resolution footage ? or do you need to full resolution already associated with the project? This was great though thank you . I work alone so far but I want to know this stuff as well.
Great question! Yes there can be some annoying stuff if you don't link correctly. Since I am already proxying the footage, I just link the main footage (and proxies) into the edit page. Than the editor just links the proxies. The file path of footage is independent per computer - so how I or my assistant editor links our footage in the project doesn't affect us on either end.
@@TheOrsonLord Thank you for yore reply. What your saying is what I thought. I just wish there was a way for a Clint to generate proxies and then send them for Assembly and then be able to re-link back two original footage when the client received it back. I guess to re-link the client would still have to go into DaVinci Resolve. It'd be cool if say in proxy generator the proxies cold then be relinked back to originals on client side. lol super niche. I can think of a few other scenarios this would be helpful though. Just thinking out loud at this point .... There are many threads out there of people having problems around this and it was hard to find a definitive answer. Thank you and Have a good one.
@@TheOrsonLord I also have some problem with that. My primary edit workstation is Windows 11 based and I have an iPad 12 Pro with Resolve Studio as super mobile solution, but in the same time I have a hard time to relink anything on iPad. It would be great if you could create an another video with full explanation of your workflow starting from project syncing and going through proxy relinking (on remote pc/mac/iPad device). Thanks.
@@lens.eye. Only just seeing this comment now! (RUclips sometimes doesn't notify my on replies...) I'm honestly not too familiar with the Ipad solution as I don't really do edits on the job. This would be a really interesting thing to figure out though!
(probably stupid) question: why is the black magic cloud needed? can't you just use one google drive-account (share it with editors) so everyone can upload the new edited videos? would that work if everyone had the same video footage on their computers?
Relinking media and sending the wrong project files is a huge time sink, and the $10/month cost for BM Cloud is a no-brainer to avoid those headaches. With BM Cloud, each user’s file paths are stored separately, so unlike Google Drive, you won’t waste time dealing with relinks. To put it simply: BM Cloud can save you about an hour per video project, and if you’re working on multiple projects, the savings only multiply. If your time is worth more than $10 an hour, BM Cloud is absolutely worth it-and if it’s not, well… 😅

Maybe it's time for PeeJ to create an army of remote AMV editors?
