They are right for executives that want to monitor employees. But wrong in every way for employees. Office workers are on the way out anyways....companies make more when people work from home xD But the statement that "open office space increases communication." Is not backed by science. It actually decreases face to face communication. An employees productivity falls through the floor with open space. Yes employees SHOULD FEEL PARANOID because they A EGG E being watched and monitored I wish internet speeds country wide in the USA increased...we have fallen behind the rest of the world.
Office layout has changed many times over the years, as the emphasis of office design has moved away from solely focusing on productivity. We are now increasingly thinking about aspects such as employee health, creativity and collaborative working. Talking through with your team about what environment they will work best in can help with office design.
We agree completely. It's no longer about packing as many people into a space as possible, it's about creating spaces that enable people to do their best work!
It's very striking how well diagnosed the open office concept was described here in this 2 YO vid. Maybe what the expert couldn't figure at the time, was the rise of office phone booths (or office pods), to deal with the downturns of open office, like the lack of privacy and silence at the time of a conference call, or some hour for a deep anaylisis. Couldn't agree more. In the last 12+ months we have seen quite a few new lines of privacy rooms / phone booths / quiet spaces hit the market. There has also been a huge increase in options for sound-absorptive materials (ex. light fixtures, wall coverings, workstation panels, decor, etc.). Lots of change!
Are you working in a Closed or Open Concept Office Design?
