The whole town blaming him for something that they THEMSELVES supported will piss me off forever.

But it is something that does happen. The impression I get is Barret (who was being pragmatic) was persuasive. As the people couldn't hit back at Shinra they used Barret as a scapegoat.

@@Relugus And he also blames himself for falling for Shinras promises. All he wanted was for his town to still have jobs after the coal mines stopped making profits

Yeah this situation really frustrated me . The whole town blaming Barrett just doesn’t really make sense . Multiple people took a vote . I understand Barrett blaming himself for sure and the situation between him and Dyne but the townspeople’s being upset with Barrett really requires more involvement on the part of Barrett…..which I would have been totally up for the developers doing. Maybe Barrett went behind their people backs or maybe he was the primary person helping Shinra tip the scales to gain control somehow . But just having him be for the reactor and being another vote in the group feels unfair and unrealistic.

Yeah, but since when do bitter human beings want to accept blame and responsibility? Easier to offload it on somebody else.

I remember in the original that there was an explosion at the reactor and the people of Corel were blamed for it. There wasn't much more context added, but the remake having the reactor completely destroyed added more context, as did the one in Gongaga, added context that yeah, it was Shinra's fault, the reactors were faulty and were never inspected, so the reactors failed, went critical, and exploded, and Shinra was a lot more worried about saving face so they blamed the people living near them and said it was terrorists, they couldn't have it get out that their reactors were faulty, though I guess the one that Gongaga was remote enough that they felt they didn't need to take the action they did at Corel.

It just feels extremely contrived. Literally everyone but Dyne voted in favor of the reactor. You could argue that people need a scapegoat and that's true to an extent, humans don't always operate with hard facts and logic, but the 5th grader level bullying was hard to take seriously. On top of that it was Yuffie, a literal 16 year old out of all people, who had the most reasonable reaction lol

I think a simple reason would be
They have a good reason to believe Barret did NOT drop the sector 7 plate, yeah.
*But he's the reason Shinra dropped it, isn't he? And thereforth, he ruined many lives AGAIN through his actions.*
Them going at it from a repeat offender angle would have justified their hate a LOT more.

No one outside Corel would ever blame Barret. Audience especially. We dont need to defend him because theres nothing to defend. The writers just wrote Corel to be a bunch of pissy people who needed to point a finger.
