@@ariellovesblue7 no, he was right all along lol she was chosen because of her ethnic background and not actually her work. Mark spent months working on his application, and Betty came up with something at best mediocre in two days... reality check

My mom did too (want to slap Marc). But he was telling the truth though-basically any system that runs off of funding (like YETI, I presume, would) DOES need to meet a certain quota to attain said funding. It's stupid-but it's true.
He told her the truth, he may have been mean, but he still told her the truth. This is one scene where her character is annoying. Betty didn't like that he told her that she filled a quota. I like how meta this scene is. It depicts how overly glorified people get the cover of time magazines because they fill a quota. While others who do an equal amount of work, if not more, don't get noticed. I felt bad for Mark because he was right. This show is really brilliant and wish that it had more seasons.
To be honest, the way that the Yeti program was set up shows the whole thing is BS! Marc still gets in probably because he checked off the gay box. Matt probably got in because his father is extremely wealthy and probably secretly contributed to the program. It's a common story and today, well, we are seeing it in action. It's why we hardly see any really good original content being released. It's mostly remakes, reboots, etc because the people given the education and jobs got there by some kind of affirmative action or nepotism.
@@spirittammykaffirmative action is still better than nepotism. The both don’t even compare morally. I don’t think you people even understand the reason why affirmative action was created
@@ariellovesblue7 But they are being forced to lower college admittance scores for affirmative action to get certain people in school. It's not only not fair, but outright dangerous if these people are going to school for medical degrees or engineering degrees. Who would you want operating on your heart or designing the plane you are about to board? Someone who is the best of the best or someone who got in because of the color of their skin?
I'm doing an Ugly Betty rewatch and I'm on this episode. I just love this part. 1:10 Do you really think that what you made in 2 days is better than what I spent 3 months working on?" Betty is so annoying in this and just girl really? your one poster concept was better than the whole magazine that Marc made? Yeah ok.
Same here, I'm on the ending of season 3, and she really annoys me sometimes. I really got mad at her when she gets nosey with Matt paying the restaurant bill and she realizes he's the one that gave her the $10,000 check for her father's house and she turns it down. But then she turns around and begs him to let Daniel talk to his father about funding the company. I just thought she was being really selfish there.
The same thing happened to me while applying to teacher training courses. I’d heard that one uni had spaces on their courses so I contacted them asking to apply/get an interview. After asking a few questions, they turned around and said “sorry, but these spaces are reserved for international students only”. I’d get if I was applying early in advance - but the application deadline was the very next day. They admitted they had plenty of spaces - but I didn’t meet their quota. They wouldn’t make an exception either. Just like Marc didn’t meet YETI’s quota. I thought what Marc said was harsh/horrible/unforgivable at the time, but now I realise he’s actually telling the truth.
The whole show was ahead of it's time and one of the few things I wish Disney and ABC would bring back, at least for a miniseries or a movie. It's so ironic that Disney keeps making flops with changing genders and races in remakes when they can bring back this original program that the public actually liked and wanted more of.
Marc was a little harsh in this scene but it is a true practice, even today. Happens in some schools, even some companies Schools like to keep a "quota" of diversity, doesn't matter what your skin color is. People have been denied and excepted only because of skin color, gender, or finances. Not because of talent, scores, education, etc.. Because of this, more deserving students have lost out on amazing opportunities. Harvard was really big in doing this till 2019 when they supposedly stopped. School admissions should have nothing to do with race, gender, sexual orientation, or personal/family finances. In this situation, Betty and Marc BOTH deserved it because of talent, experience and hard work, not because of what they look like or came from. In the end, they both got in for the right reasons and I loved this episode because of that.
Honestly watching this on hulu made me realize that though the show may be about her, Betty is not even a character I favor! They try to make her the moral compass, as if she's the saint compared to everyone when those around her are just doing what they need, to make their dreams come true! She's always judging people, always pushing the oh ive sacrificed a lot on people including her own family! She was literally gonna miss her father's citizenship ceremony just because he spoke the truth, her and henry were a stupid idea, than she does what she does best as an argument, oh I'm always sacrificing for this family, he's a citizen because of me! I always thought it was funny that she stop liking her neighbor Jessie when he kept speaking about himself yet she's done the same damn thing!
True but it was an absolute joy watching her gain confidence as the series went on, and her relationship with Daniel was just so pure for my heart. I do feel that she became more saint Like after season 1. But then again, betty isn't the only character who screws up all the time!
Basically Betty is my annoying sister, I like her, I root for her but I also find there are times where I just can't stand her! Felt the same way about Hilda! I guess the reason why I let the others get away with making mistakes is because I already knew they had flaws whilst Betty made it appear as if she was the one with higher moral ground! The others acknowledge who they were, said shit to your face whilst Betty smiled at them but spoke ill about them behind their backs! I mean she worked at this magazine company yet always tended to look down on the company, called them shallow because it's a fashion magazine, something she thinks isn't important!
That's what made Betty relatable though. She was the main character but she also had her flaws, no one is perfect and the fact that she had her own flaws just made me love her all the more, and made her more relatable as a character. It wouldn't be realistic to paint her as a Saint and I don't think the show tries to make her out to be a Saint.
Yep, she's probably my least favorite character along with her father and sister. Everyone else I love to death, with Marc, Amanda and Daniel being my favorites.
Whilst I think Betty's initial acceptance into YETI was a quota meeting figure, I'd like to think the reason she was accepted a second time was because of Daniel's letter of recommendation. He hadn't written it when she was first accepted, thus it would have been easier to chalk up her successful application to a diversity quota, whilst a proper letter singing her praises would have likely bolstered her attempt the second time round.
Marc exhibits classic Narcissistic behavior in this scene, which is not exactly unique for the characters in this show (excluding Betty and her family and a few other characters). He starts out being incredibly verbally abusive towards her, then he insults and devalues Betty's presentation and implies she didn't deserve it while building himself up as this genius whose thunder she stole, once again putting down Betty who quite frankly has by this point been put down enough in this freaking show. We beg the question: Marc has treated her like dirt many times thus far, why should Betty feel the least bit sorry for him? Given that he's gone to FIT and studied in Milan, Marc has already received a lot of opportunities Betty has not. This will probably be one of the few bits of recognition she will get in her life, even if there were some ulterior motives behind it. I think the judges actually did like Betty's presentation because it was something original, something unique from the usual shallow fashion garbage they are likely bombarded with every time. This should be one of the happiest moments of Betty's life thus far, but Marc has just ruined it. Grow up, Marc. Spare us the "Woe is me" routine. Try being happy for someone besides yourself for once. While Ugly Betty had a few funny moments, I by and large could not bear to watch this show much. Most of it revolves around Betty being endlessly taken advantage of and humiliated by her Narcissistic bosses and co-workers over and over again. It's almost as if the underlying message of the show is "Hey ugly girls, your entire life is going to be spent doing everything you can to help a bunch of pretty Narcissists who will show no appreciation for it and generally treat you like crap. Oh, and you'll be told you're being totally selfish if you try to get anything for yourself or have your own goals - in spite of the fact that the Narcissists behave selfishly ALL THE TIME." I experience that enough in my real life, thank you. Watching someone else go through it as entertainment is not my idea of a good time.
I haven't got the patience to be reading all this. All I got was that you really hate Marc and you really hate narcissists and you think their horrible people. Ooh my mum called me a narcissist once I must rethink my entire life.
To be narcissistic is to only think of yourself and Marc has shown care in his own way to many on this show including Betty! He spoke his truth unlike Betty who speaks her truth to those behind their backs and acts holier than thou! Always crying about how she's changing into these people, her coworkers thus judgmental and hypocritical, like she's better than them! She always talks about her sacrifice as if she's the only one who's made them!
