    From the viewpoint of one who highly values fuelwood: "It'll burn fine, once properly air-dried." Red oak will just need a couple years. Waste not, want not, you know.

    Looks like she should have been harvested years ago. The best thing is the light and water the saplings will now get from her being gone. Thanks for sharing.

    Red Oak is our staple, with storms and natural die out, we have unlimited firewood. The limiting factor is me.

    Big tree little saw. Good job dropping it. You just never know until you start cutting them. Looked like a good tree !

    That definitely sucks! Where I’m at if it’s that big I tell everyone it’s hollow or full of metal. That’s why it wasn’t cut 30 years ago. I have only been surprised a time or two. Best of luck on the next one. 👍

    Saw is runnin good, this one of the rebuilt ones? I like those maxi flex gloves too. They make ones for summer, they are blue and wick sweat. They dont hold up as well as the grey/black ones though.

    We used to have a market for that stuff but when the big paper mill at Canton, NC shutdown that ended all that.

    I’m still amazed how you get all of your cuts to line up when falling a large tree. I couldn’t read the label on the gallon jug of bar oil what is your favorite bar oil and mix oil?

    I’ve also often wondered what those big white larvae turn into. They seem to be plentiful inside of a hollowed out red oak in that black rich rot-dirt.

      We call them Betsy bug larvae. Or bess beetle. A shiny black beetle about 1½ to 2 inches long.

      @@nuts319 that black material inside that trunk is great for gardening. We also used it to cover traps on log sets back in the day.

    The saw keeps getting stuck because he tries to cut through the entire limb or trunk from the compression side. It's usually better to cut up to a third of the way through from the compression side and finish the cut from the tension side. This also prevents the wood from splitting vertically.

    Im no tree surgeon, but you can tell if a trunk is rotten by the chips or lack of them when sawing!!💪💪👍

    At least it was hollow. I've split a solid one from butt to fork because it landed on the fork wrong. Makes good pulpwood though...

    While I admire the skill needed to make the horizontal cuts line up properly, that was a very dangerous way to fell a tree -- no face cut and no hinge. It could have fallen unpredictably, especially given that the base was hollow.

    You say waste I say put that on a tri axle truck and it’s $300 bucks of a $850 truck. Everything bigger than 6 inches. 🔥 wood all day.

      Lightning tends to stay toward the outside of objects because electrons repel one another. It might kill a young tree or even set it on fire, but it wouldn't hollow out the centre. This tree rotted from the inside.
