  • This is an anime/shanty crossover I did with the haunting tune, "The Press Gang." Athrun Zala, from "Gundam Seed," plays the new sailor and soon finds out that life on board a Man o' War is not exactly an easy life. With hard life comes hard consequences.

    "Now is your chance to do your bit for King George, lad!" WHAM WHAM WHAM!! Yeah, service on the King's ships of the line was brutal. At least on a sloop or frigate the prize money might come in to offset the rope's end and the cat...

    I've heard tell the punishment were a little less deadly aboard Pirate vessels, usually. Long live the black flag!

    • @marcuspetrushko3762
      @marcuspetrushko3762 9 лет назад +6

      That's probably because a pirate vessel was a band of criminals who had a boat. While a Man of war was a military vessel with discipline and regulations and all that.

      @@marcuspetrushko3762 Yeah but service aboard a man o war was a whole lot better than a merchant ship. Honestly the only reason why naval ships get pegged so much because their in the history books . With service aboard a man o war there were articles for officers and men . You could be flogged to an inch of your life but this happened aboard navy ships far less often than in the merchant service . Being one of the King’s sailors was down right luxury compared with a merchantman where the ship was owned privately and they had pretty much total power .

    So many shanties have those memorable, haunting tunes; maybe the hard and often short life on a sailing ship bred musical inspiration. For good novels of Nelson's navy, see Alexander Kent. Many thanks again for posting these superb renditions, and the videos to go with them. .

    You are right. And I don't believe the british propaganda about french soldiers who was willing to join the british rather than return to France, after they had surrendered in egypt. In the army of the revolutionary France and of Napoleon, the private soldiers had much better conditions, and most of the officers had started their career as private soldiers, while 99 procent of the british officers never had tryed to be private.

  • @d73freeman

    They did it because they were desperate for seamen in their fight against Napolean. They claimed the right to seek out British deserters and seamen of British nationality who sought haven on American ships where the pay and treatment were a lot better.

  • @Twinkie16002
    @Twinkie16002 11 лет назад

    Thats a poor point as that is NOT the point of 'history will repeat itself' I'd like to point out narutofightindreamer has much too large a name but did quotes showing that 'always' is a relative term. History did repeat it self there, I will explain as you missed the point... Russia and the US had a 'space race' to see who got to the moon first. We being the two most powerful countries A.T.M. this is a repeat of French and Spanish race to colonize America. You may debate this subject. I love it :D. No, really, I love intelligent debates! Throw it at me!

    My favorite person in this video is Lieutnant Hajime Saito, he's just so cool when he stands in the background at 1:53 and 2:18 with his cold, feelingless eyes :P
    On the contrary, I don't like captain Vegeta, he is not realistic to look at, he just looks like a person from the Simpsons cartoon.

    Good pay? Bull crap. Man o' War ships paid their sailors half of what a merchant ship paid. Man, press gangs suck. :p
    At the peak of press gangs, they stopped persuading. Eventually they just started knocking out random men and dragging them on board. That would suck so bad....

    Such a beautiful song. I love your illustrations. What might at first seem a bit of an odd and anachronistic choice, depicting 18th/19th century sailors as anime characters, is quickly overcome by your skill in portraying them, so what comes across is the emotion rather than, say, the hair styles, at odds with the time period. It makes for a relate-able, like-able video. My question now is...where the devil did you get the idea to combine the two? Fantastically done.

    This is a powerful song and quite popular in the sea shanty and folk communities around the world. Correct attribution would be nice, though. This version is sung by William Pint of Washington State in the US on an album produced by Victory Sings At Sea, The Curse of the Somers. Please consider updating the upload comments to reflect this. Thank you.

    the navy was not actually that bad
    at the time when when conscription for the navy was at its worst Britain's economy was not doing to well because the war had hindered their trade. As Britain's main industry (aside from agriculture) was manufacturing it relied on trade for raw materials. this meant few jobs. On shore the the punishment for theft was execution, on a ship it was flogging. they fed you, paid you, and even offered a pension if you were wounded.

      He was flogged for fighting on the ship with his crewmates. That's a court martialling offense, to maintain military discipline. I'm sure that holds true even today, although they don't flog people anymore.

    You might say that the crew made a harsh christening. No doubt Athrun might have performed some sort of minor offense or misconduct. But Vegeta, being the captain of the ship, is a hard taskmaster. The slightest sign of insubordination or misconduct and he gives the maximum punishment.
