  • Hello everyone,
My mated queens have finally arrived from Melo Bees!!
I've used this opportunity to make a video on what you should do when you first open the package and then continue on to explain how to release them successfully into the hive.
Ensuring you care for your queens when you first receive them is a crucial step in requeening your hive. They can be a bit dehydrated from the journey, and you don't know how they've been handled by the postal service. It gives you a chance to look for any issues before you take them to their new home.
The process of requeening a hive can be quite long and labour intensive, but it's extremely rewarding to see a colony struggling at the beginning of the year become your best honey producer by the end of summer just because you spent two weeks giving them some extra attention.
I hope you enjoy the video and don't mind the cameos from my cats.
If you like what you see and want to follow me for more advice or possible chaos, then please like and subscribe to my channel🙂
Hope you're all safe and well,
    Greg

Is it possible to get a queen with a few bees as in the video and use a small mating box (apidea ) I think it’s called and build a full hive up from there?

Yes, I've done it, but it takes forever. I modified a super frame so it could hold all three apidea frames securely and then placed it into a 2 frame nuc. It required constant feeding before they were strong enough to move into a 6 frame nuc.
Sadly, they were killed by wasps in the autumn, but it was a fun little experiment while it lasted.
