- This Video shows how to remove injectors off a Yamaha 250HP HPDI outboard engine. This engine is a 2 stroke High Pressure Direct Injection Engine. Injector Removal is pretty straight forward. Something a slightly mechanically inclined individual will be able to handle. I like to send my injectors to Flagship Marine for service, or use First Class Injectors. I have a 2004 200 hpdi. All of your videos are very helpful. Thank you !
Just purchased a 2005 hpdi 250, definitely going to do this! Keep the videos coming
awesome! please let us know if there is anything you would like to see.
Thanks man, only thing missing or I did not catch is what engine is this exactly, 2 or 4 stroke and what year, further more as a request, if you could make a video on changing the inner injector filters. Thanks for the video, it really makes life easier to know what to expect. Keep it up
Thanks for watching and for the feed back. I will be posting a video in the next few days on the injector filters. As for this video, the injectors were for a Yamaha 250HP HPDI 2 stroke. Year:2003
I realized that you did mention the engine details except the 2;stroke part, silly me 🤣 was wondering if the 4 stroke is too different?
@@ibraheem3abassi579 as far as the injectors, they are pretty much the same way. maybe a clip or couple screws differ. configuration may differ but overall they work the same way. take lots of pictures helps when putting it all back together. Good Luck
Do you need to relieve the fuel pressure first? Aren’t these under 800PSI of pressure? I noticed you had no issue with fuel spraying out. I didn’t know if you relieved the pressure before the video or they aren’t under pressure as I thought?
Excellent video! you helped me to be able to take my injectors out with no problems on my 250 HPDI. All of your videos have been very helpful and I can’t thank you enough now that I do my own work on my outboard. I have one question about the fiber gasket material that is stuck to the backside of the injector port, and how you scrape it off without scarring the metal so when I get mine back from service, they have a clean surface to seat on. Thank you very much. 🙏🏼
This is a tricky one, you don’t want to scrape the metal where you may gauge it. Or sand it down and get metal dust in your cylinder head.
Honestly replace the crush gaskets, each injector has a pair (2) and I don’t mess with the residue left where the injector sits.
Now if you have a fiber washer that noticeably fell apart and left half the fiber on the head, I’d probably use a pick to remove as much as I can.
Thank you for watching and glad these videos have helped you out Ryan 🤙🏽
@@ReelTeaseFishing That's the name for them A crush washer lol I couldn't think of the name... I did buy two per injector and I know you sandwich them together on the sticky side..... I have a hard plastic scraping tool I won't get too crazy with I don't want anything to fall into the combustion chamber through the hole. I was going to use a cordless vacuum to suck out any fibers... Thank you for the reply 🤙🏼🤙🏼
@@ryans7679 that should work out great!
@@ReelTeaseFishing whyd u have 2 remove it
@@antonioprado8068 I was chasing down an issue that was causing my engine to run only at low RPMS. (not limp mode) just couldn't get on plane.
Can you please do a video on fogging that motor?
I have a Yamaha f115 and my fuel rail has a slight click. Anyway I thought it was something else initially because I had just changed out my timing belt and put my engine back in timing. It was timed perfectly and I used a stethoscope to pinpoint the clicking to my fuel rail. Anyway, I’m not sure if it’s always had that click and I’m only noticing now because I replaced a timing belt. Should I just keep running it?
Not sure what the clicking is but if it’s a failing injector you could blow your engine. Id have it checked by a certified Yamaha tech.
Is it just that easy ? The first fuel rail looked pretty hard to pry off. Re-installing easier ? Torque spec on the 4 bolts??
If you take your time, document and have a good assortment of hand tools you can do the job pretty easily.
I suggest you download the outboard manual specific to your engine as specs differ.
Great video, just purchased a 2003 Hurricane GS188 Fun Deck with a 200hp hpdi, started on a dime and idled beautiful at time of purchase even thought the boat had sat for 3 yrs. I trailered boat 3+hrs home and then went to put it in the water. The seller mentioned he thought the oil injection was disconnected. After checking it out I don't think it is disconnected but to be safe I added 50:1 mixed fuel in the tank. I put it in the water, it started right up and idled nice. Put it in gear and started to increase throttle slowly got to about 15-20 mph almost on plane and then it wouldn't increase in speed. Pulled the throttle back, motor stalled and now it won't start. I changed the fuel filter under the cowling, I have good spark but it won't start. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
First things first, you need to verify that the oil is indeed disconnected or isn’t. Because if it is not disconnected you will be running too much oil and foul plugs.
Yamaha has great oil systems. I’d recommend not bypassing the oil system
@@ReelTeaseFishing Thanks for the response, How can I verify that the oil injection is connected and working correctly? I pulled the hose at the top of the oil reservoir tank and hit the manual switch by the oil tank and I have oil pumping out from the oil tank in the boat. How can I verify the oil pump below the reservoir tank is working correctly? Thanks
@@kevinharding2036 one more thing to check because that’s the manual override.
When you first turn the key on, have someone put there hand on the actual pump on the boat oil tank reservoir. It should run for about 90 seconds. We know the pump works we just want to make sure it’s working with the key.
Now with the tank already premixed. Easiest way is to mark the tank on the boat with a marker and run the boat for sometime. They marking should lower if it’s using oil from the tanks.
Over oiling isn’t a bad thing, so no need to worry. You may foul plugs though and run roughly as it’s trying to burn the oil.
Good job
thank you
Would have liked it if you can show changing the filters in the injectors and a source for them.
We had our injectors serviced by flagship marine. However I do show in another video how to change the mystery filters on the high pressure pump of these HPDI Engines.
Heres the link

We've got the filters for the HPDI injector. Small or large quantity available.
Here is the link.

I have twin 300 hpdi on my contender and I have been chasing a fuel problem for months. I now believe it is my injectors and wanted to know what else I could check prior to removing them
In this order for fuel issues. external Spin on fuel filter, fuel filter under cowling. Low pressure fuel pump leak test, VST filter. VST fuel pump check (PSI around 50 through Schrader valve) Medium pressure canister fuel filter, Mystery filters in High Pressure Pump, Fuel Injectors service.
Flagship Marine does a great job servicing HPDI injectors. However not sure exactly what your experiencing but a bad ground will make you chase your tail with the HPDI. Bad ground mimics a fuel issue on these outboards. Clean, tighten and check all grounds, also check for corrosion/wear in the main battery cables to the engine. Good Luck
@@ReelTeaseFishing where are you guys located ?

@@ReelTeaseFishing dang way too far .. I just pulled all my spark plugs and injectors and cleaned out the fuel filter on top of the motor and installed a new external fuel filter and filled with 93 octane. Now I’m trying to make a rig to blow out the injectors with a battery like you did but I don’t have a spare power clip... any other way
Loved the video bud, I used this for taking out my injectors a few weeks ago. Thank you for that! I noticed you didn’t change out any of the O-rings is it something you should do? Also, where the crusher washers seat What do you use to clean/scrape out the washer material left from the old ones in the block? Thank You again. I watched all of your videos, and they are helping me tremendously.
Would you happen to know the part # for it? actually have the same motor.

how about removing the filter basket from the injector?
The price of injectors can be pretty hefty, I like to send them out for a full service as a set of 6-8 injectors fully serviced will usually cost less than a single new injector.
However if you want to remove the basket filter (micro filter) from the injector there’s a trick of screwing in a standard wood screw into the filter until it grabs then screw it one more half turn and pull out the screw using a pair of pliers. This will pop out the filter and the new filter can be pressed back in.
2019 Yamaha 300HP 4stroke V6 , 2250 hours . .
Recently start to lose power after 4000RPM if run 5min or so. Feels like it’s coughing.
Never had this problem before , every 200h I do basic maintenance. ( oil , spark plugs, filters , thermostat, water pump)
Never replace or clean injectors .
What could be causing this issue ?
Thank you
I would
Check engine compression first and foremost
If that checks out then move to your VST filter.
I’d also hook up to YDS, this checks fuel pressure and search for any codes or misfires.
Lastly I would then send injectors out for service.
@@ReelTeaseFishing I will be taking the boat out for service tomorrow ,your answer just came out on time I really appreciate it.!
@@mmuratkaratass best of luck, thanks for watching and the kind words.
When pulling the injector so you replace all the o rings and gaskets? Just put them in my cart and it's pretty pricey
Yamaha recommends that all crush gaskets get replaced. Each injector has two gaskets.
Due to shortages I have reused o rings and crush gaskets on my own outboard without I’ll effects. On a customers outboard that is not an option.
@@ReelTeaseFishing thanks for the reply I went ahead and ordered the crush washers and o-rings I got a fuel leak around a injector and feel safer replacing these 20yo o rings
@@KennethLondon-ft9gw yeah that’s the way to go. Not sure if you have had the injectors serviced but I would highly recommend getting them cleaned and serviced since they are out already.
Flagship Marine is a great place to send them in. Side note, not everyone can service HPDI injectors since they are 700+ psi
@@ReelTeaseFishing I'll check them out today! And I got a fuel leak which I'm assuming is the upper o ring on the injector just waiting on parts before I pull it apart and thank you for the help so far.
Any tips on re-installing the injectors? When I tried to install them they seemed to come to a hard stop about 1/4 inch from being seated fully. Do you use the retaining clip and bolt to seat them?
Are you replacing your crush gaskets? The injectors take 2 gaskets/washers each. Manual by Yamaha says they are not re usable. I’d double check you aren’t leaving any washers in place and doubling them when installing the injectors.
They should fit back in place seated fully.
Yes I did get new gaskets. I checked and found that several of the old gaskets were still stuck. Once I removed them everything went together smoothly. Thanks for your video I appreciate it…
Thanks buddy I have 2001 200hp Yamaha hpdi 2 stroke n the don’t stay idle so I go change the injectors see what happens
these engines really need clean fuel. I am sure you have heard but the mystery filters, VST filters should need to be cleaned if you are having issues.
You can also Send the injectors to Flagship Marine and have them tested and cleaned. for the price of one new injector.
Hello I’m in ct. my out board is a 2000 150 hpdi. It started running at low rpms like it has a cannon it. I had a shop do all the filters minus the mystery ones. If I unplug the bottom right injector it stops when I plug it back in it still does it. Is the injector bad ty
It’s hard to tell without actually being able to see the engine. However please note that at idle the HPDI will be operating with a few cylinders dropped. So disconnecting a cylinder or injector can cause it to die or cut off.
If it’s running at low RPM make sure to eliminate the causes for “limp mode” which is low oil (bad oil sensor in aux or under cowling reservoir) overheating or water in fuel. Also make sure your grounds are all clean and tight. Especially the battery main cable.
Hi ,I have a 2004 hpdi Yamaha 200 hp I changed the gasket injectors and the compression continues to come out of the 6 injectors, when you put new gaskets does it have any adhesive or something between the injector and the gasket?
The injectors have an o ring and two crush gaskets. It is then held down by the retaining clip with a bolt.
The crush gaskets are one time use. I believe the 200hpdi is V4 so you should have a total of 8 crush gaskets two per injector
@@ReelTeaseFishing I finished it today, the problem is that it has 2 gaskets in each injector tip, the 200 hp is v6, I fixed it, it has 120 psi in each cylinder, thank you very much
@@DanielGarcia-td6nm awesome glad you got it figured out 👍🏽

I have a 2002 hpdi 200. Is it the same concept for my motor as the 250 in this video? I’m going to attempt to change my injectors this coming weekend.
YES, it will be the same concept. goodluck and go slow. take lots of pictures and be sure to lube everything back up when re assembling.
