When I bought mine in the early 80s, the package direction said it was for signing oil paintings. I've used it for tons of art projects over the years but never signed an oil painting with it.
I always saw a similar item for pisanki/pysanky eggs But I can also say I’ve seen oil painters in school with these and it’s nice to use to sign so you don’t smudge the oil Never saw it in action though Just asked “why do you have pisanki tools?”

Flat head pen changing width with angles of movement sounds way more appealing, if I have to micromanage open ink let me write in gothic font to outweigh the extra effort.

The melted wax covers whatever color you want to keep and then you dip and wax the next part of your design. When finished, you scrape the egg and shine/seal it with the scrapings. we also have pen like that in Indonesia, it's called canthing, it's a pen for painting "Kain Batik", and it use special ink called "Malam (Malam batik/Lilin batik)" which made from beeswax and it's also obtained from plant excretions, in the form of rosin or pine 🫢

If I'm not mistaken, I think this writing tool originates from 10th century kingdoms of south east asia. Originally made of wood and brass. It is called canting and used to make batik tulis.
I've got a collection of these with one handle and multiple nozzles with different sizes. I inheritated them from my grandpa. He was a doctor and meterologist. They there used to draw the graphs between single measurement points before machines could print them all automatically. They are now something around 70 years old and still doing fine.

This is also used for Pisanki - melted wax is added instead of ink then you draw designs on eggs, dipping in colouring before moving to the next layer
