There is a section in this cemetery designated for the victims of Our Lady of Angels school fire. It occurred in 1958 and took the lives of several nuns and almost 100 students. Several survivors wrote books about their long and painful rehabilitation. There were no smoke detectors or sprinklers in the school - because of a grandfather clause the archdiocese was not required to retrofit the school with these things as long as it complied with previous regulations. This was a horrible mistake that caused many innocent children to die and left grief-stricken families and friends and a devastated community. The Our Lady of Angels tragedy saved the lives of future schoolchildren everywhere because much stricter codes were enacted in both public and private schools. Sad that things like this have to happen before people realize the dangers.
Thanks Lamont for your visits and thoughtful commentary. I have always liked to visit graves, thinking about each person and their lives and remembering them. If you ever get back to Chicago check out Graceland cemetery- it has many historical gravesites including those of the Kinzies, one of the first families to live in the area. Awesome monuments like Loredo Taft’s “Eternal Silence” and family crypts too. I know you don’t do famous people but you still might like to see the graves of George Pullman, Louis Sullivan, Allan Pinkerton, Jack Johnson (who fought the “Great White Hope” and won), Ernie Banks, William Hulbert (founder of the National League, buried under a giant baseball headstone) among many others. Also, if you really need a good cry, head to a pet cemetery. Most of the graves have photos of dogs, cats, birds, you name it. If you think the messages on human graves are heartbreaking wait til you read some of these - I could barely find my car through the tears.

Mt. Carmel, right across the street form Queen of Heaven, where you filmed this, is where Al Capone and many infamous Chicago mobsters are buried. His grave is very easy to find. Turn in off of Roosevelt Rd., turn right immediately, and along the fence (along Roosevelt Rd.) to the right, you'll find his gravesite. It's also where most of the Archbishops/Cardinals of the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago are buried in a very elaborate mausoleum. Might want to visit it. Your videos are really good, love that you take time to give back-stories to some of them.

Jeff Campbell It happens all the time it’s very common my mother died first then my father died about three and a half years later. It really stinks when your grandparents out live your parents. When Dad died his parents came to the funeral about three months later my grandmother had a mild heart attack the Dr and my grandfather think it was the stress of his funeral the Dr told my Grandfather no parent wants to outlive their child no matter how old that child is.

Hi Lamont, glad you made it to Chicago. Perhaps you can try going across the street to Mount Carmel. Al Capone and family are buried there towards front entrance road make a right and you can see the whole Capone family. Story is they removed Al Capone's body to another stop. If you go straight to back entrance by the bathrooms across from it is a large statue of a mother buried there above ground on a huge large block where flowers coins are placed there. Story is she was buried in the ground and her mother dreamed of her. They dug her body up after many years and open her casket and she remain the same as if she was buried looking the same. It's said her father wanted her body to be buried elsewhere. Si seek the spot across from those bathrooms you can't miss her. I believe her name was Mary as for the last name it begins with the letter B. An Italian young girl she was and beautiful. I believe her photo is on her grace site. Take care Lamont and thanks for venturing those fasinating cemeteries.
