That “Can’t Be Friends” story is such a great moment in describing a trustful artist/producer relationship. Mario Winans needs to be on the podcast. What he did on Tamia’s debut album prod “Rain On Me” and “Never Gonna Let You Go” is pure r&b genius.
Oh wow to hear him mention Jeff Lorber i can relate as a producer. His albums are so well put together where every instrument is highlighted plus he's an amazing arranger & composer. BET Jazz used to be one of my favorite shows to watch on Sundays and there's an episode he's on.

He always took the time to explain and teach the whys and the history of music. His collection of physical music (Cds and Vinyls) that he pulls from at a moments notice to really SHOW you is extensive. He taught us that the perfect notes are great but the FEELING and the PASSION is whats most important and what connects with the audience. He is forever a LEGEND and I'm grateful to have known and worked with him. Dope Episode #TTU

I was one of the first producers signed to Songbook. My first contract was with The Characters. These stories took me back. The break up with Charles and Troy. Trey Songz being signed and dropped by The Characters. Then shopping Trey through Songbook to labels. It was a crazy time!!

I remember when troy used to work at merles record rack downtown new haven ct, just like he told it. I was on a college radio station there wnhu 88.7 fm, and sometimes I would buy vinyl records from him. He had a record out on warlock records, and I played it. He's a genius.

I just want Tyrese to know that Sweet Lady LITERALLY sold me that album. I was in the record store on those headphones that they used to let you listen to new albums and the way that song come into my ears when it came on...maaaaaan... I still remember how it felt. Remember that 8 seconds of Boyz II Men? It was about 8 seconds and I stopped it and grabbed that cd and it was mine. And yes the whole album WAS slow as sht. And I still loved it. SWEET LADY WAS EVERYTHING❤‼️

The Characters were definitely fundamental in the sound of Boyz II Men. Cooley High Harmony is a R&B treasure and Your Love was definitely my jam.
I appreciate this podcast; Tank and J Valentine deserve your flowers as well for being pioneers and keeping the space relevant. Speaking of Boyz II Men, it would be nice to see Tim & Bob on the cast.
