Did you like my above video? I've got an even better method now to patch blacktop cracks. Epoxy! I can walk you through the process over the phone if you want. Go here: shop.askthebuilder.com/products/15-Minute-Phone-Conversation-with-Tim.html
Judy, you should read this column. SCROLL down after seeing the BEFORE photo at the top to see the remarkable way I made the epoxy disappear! www.askthebuilder.com/blacktop-crack-filler/
Tim, For that color blacktop (unsealed color) do you recommend the black crack filler or the gray PC concrete crack filler? Which one is better as far as the appearance of blending the crack in with the driveway? Going to use the stone and sand truck as well. Thanks for any advice!
black. It's TIME for that blacktop to be sealed!!! Once it turns gray, SEAL IT. You can really thank me by clicking the *THANKS* text link under the video and reciprocate with a tip.
@@askthebuilder will do! Reason I asked was because I saw your web link with step by steps on filling the crack with the PC concrete grey color epoxy and the faded black top in the photos with the grey expoxy looked just like the black faded color of my driveway! And just seemed like the after photo with using grey expoxy blended in very well with the faded black top. Which is why I wanted to know if black or grey would be better :) I’m hesitant about sealing my driveway because I was told it’s actually not that good for it due to the driveway not being able to breath and sealing it fades in about 6 months from weather. Not sure how true that is!!
@@askthebuilder I also saw your articles on you explaining why you shouldn’t need to seal your driveway! So have you changed your stance on that now? Interested to hear what you think now
I cover all of that in my past articles about sealing blacktop on my www.AsktheBuilder.com website. When you have questions about things in my video, it's usually best to check to see what I've written about the topic. My columns have WAY MORE information than most of my short videos.
@@askthebuilder yep these provide much more info! How did the grey pc concrete epoxy hold up over the years? Any update? Does it still blend in well with the driveway? I think I’m going to try it!!
Great question! Because they make the sealant appear to be the same as the asphalt cement that is holding together all the stones. The matrix of the drive is primarily stones, so you want stones to show at the top of the crack.
Can I use somthing other than a mulch stick due to a mulch shortage in my area right now? Could I use a popsicle stick or would that mess it up? Thanks. Nice video.
There is several reasons for filling in those cracks. One of the best reasons is the amount of pressure created by freezing water. The water will expand about ten percent when it freezes and it does that at over a 100 tons per square inch. That much pressure will push a driveway around.
bratan007 Yes. So the crack filler BONDS well to the blacktop. Plus when you fill the crack with the NEW PRODUCT I just discovered, no weeds grow in the crack. A link to the NEW PRODUCT is in this column: www.askthebuilder.com/blacktop-crack-filler/
Maybe. This was what was available at my local hardware store. Most of the asphalt-based materials are very similar. I was looking for one that was very sticky, and believe me it was.
Well done with the stone and sand trick. I was going to call in a contractor to redo my driveway, but it looks like I can do this myself. And as many in your comments say, I will wear a safety glass. Haha.
There is a gray concrete caulk. It's not as critical to deal with these cracks as they often don't get as much water in them as exterior concrete exposed to the elements. Snow melt can get in a garage crack, so it's not a bad idea to seal them.
I wasn't clear about that point or if I was, you took it out of context. What I discovered is that IF you do everything yourself or with a helper, it TAKES TOO LONG. You can't make any money trying to do it all yourself if you're building for a client or speculation. If you want to do everything yourself for your own home, that's called sweat equity. No issues there.
When I have my own house one day, I will be quite a handy man, thanks to you Tim! :) Also, I like that you put the sound effects back into your video intros. ;)
I couldn't find the "Liquid Nails Asphalt Repair" that you show in the video. Not at Home Depot or Lowes. Even Amazon didn't list it!! Any other brand name recommendations?
Just about any blacktop crack filler in a tube will work. Remember, price is the best barometer for quality. The more expensive products are probably better.
I can't answer. Contact your local building department. All of them around the nation have different regulations. For example, I believe it's impossible for you to pull a plumbing permit in Massachusetts as a homeowner. I believe it may be the same for electrical work in Illinois. You just have to go ask those who issue the permits.
It's absolutely too cold. Wait until the daytime temps soar to between 75-80 F. Read the label on the sealer. See what they say for the overnight low temperature.
we just paid someone to level the driveway. Now I would like to do what you did in this video. I live in the Northwest, its the rainy season, can I still do this as long as i cover up the area so it doesnt get wet? And its in the 40s and 30s at night
I want to buy the P.C concrete to fix a crack but it only comes in gray and my drive is jet black, do you know anything as good as that but in black? Thank you!
Easy! Just use my affiliate link: www.askthebuilder.com/concrete-epoxy-repair-products/ Then get some FINE black volcanic sand and small BLACK rocks that match your stones. Do one foot at a time. Press in the stones and then cover the rest of the exposed epoxy with the sand. Tamp it in with you finger. Wait for the epoxy to set for a few hours THEN brush off the loose sand to reuse at a later date.

Tim, it looks like you did a really good job filling those v-shaped cracks in your driveway. Was wondering if you vacuumed out or used compressed air prior to using the caulk gun to remove all dirt and other organic debris? Nice job adding the pea stone to blend in the asphalt crack filling compound. Thanks Tim, Louis R
Thanks! Many more new videos are in the works. I never knew the sound track was missing. We always put it in. Maybe those packets never made it to your machine.
I suggest you try it and record a video of the process. I'm really curious how well it works to spread the thick crack filler. Please come back and paste the URL to your video in your next comment. Thanks!
@@askthebuilder The portion I used a disposable paint brush to fill in the sealant seems to have worked well. After the sealant dried, I didn't see much cracking. I still had to go over it with more sealant as is settled in a bit more. It seems this is the issue with asphalt sealants. As it dries, it still cracks. But it's much cheaper than having a professional company do it. We had a professional do it and it cost the church $7,000 and this was just to last one year! If I had known it wouldn't last long, we would have done it ourselves. However, ugly it might have looked. We are doing the sealing again this year and so far, it's going ok but still having the cracking of the sealant. Labor intensive but doing it with fellow church members is fun work.
I love what you did to fill in and disguise the cracks, I hate that long filled crack showing like a big long snake.....great job, now why not show the finished look after it has dried, I bet you can barely see where the repaired crack was.......

With the amount of cracks I have in my driveway, if I used a little stick to spread it out, it would take me 30 years to finish the job. I, instead, overfill the crack and use a putty knife to smooth it out.
@@askthebuilder I've been told and can see my 40+ year old asphalt driveway needs to be replaced. I also just sealed it again and learned that it was a waste. The point was that the city "never" reseals public roads. The most important part in a good driveway install is a solid base. Resealing may look good for a year but is pointless in preventing deterioration . Cracks on the other hand need to be taken care of. The tiny rocks in the deep areas are mission-critical. The sand completely disguises the crack. Thanks for your comment!
