- El Terremoto de la costa del Pacífico en la región de Tōhoku de 2011, también conocido como Gran terremoto de Japón oriental, Gran Terremoto de Sendai, el Gran Terremoto de Tōhoku, y el terremoto 3.11, fue un megaterremoto submarino de magnitud 9.0 (9.1) que sacudió las costas de Japón a las 14:46 JST (05:46 UTC) del viernes 11 de marzo de 2011 (hace ya 10 años). El epicentro del terremoto se ubicó en el mar, frente a la costa de Honshu, 130 km al este de Sendai, en la prefectura de Miyagi, Japón, a una profundidad de 29 kilómetros. El terremoto duró aproximadamente seis minutos según los sismólogos.
Fue el terremoto más poderoso jamás registrado en Japón, y el cuarto terremoto más poderoso del mundo desde que comenzó el mantenimiento de registros modernos en 1900. El terremoto provocó poderosas olas de tsunami que alcanzaron alturas de hasta 40.5 metros (133 pies) en Miyako en la Prefectura de Iwate de Tōhoku, y que, en el área de Sendai, viajaron a 700 km / h (435 mph)) 36 hasta 10 km (6 millas) tierra adentro. Terrifying. I’m in Texas now but before that lived 77 years in the Los Angeles area. Experienced 3 major earthquakes, the worst one being 6.5. Nowhere near the 9.1 Japan had. Rest In Peace to all those who didn’t survive the incredible tsunami
That must be so scary being able to feel a 9.0+ magnitude earthquake, Japan hasn’t had a magnitude of 9.1 before until 2011 but they had a 9.0 in 869 which was in Jogan, Japan
There is nothing more frightening than the earth moving under your feet. You don’t know how long it will last or how bad it will get.
Yes when you look at mountain ranges and understand the forces at work to form them it would have been mind boggling a few million years ago.

In Los Angeles we had a 6.5 earthquake February 9, 1971. My wedding was February 21. We were still experiencing aftershocks and at our rehearsal dinner when the coffee would start sloshing in the cups you could see the blood leave the faces of the out of state relatives….LOL
For the part at the baseball game, at the 1989 World Series there was a powerful earthquake that was the first to be filmed live. This helped the MLB develop disaster response protocols for subsequent seasons.

Japanese infrastructure is marvelous because they've been through so many earthquakes. But, what we've learned through this one is move UP. I don't think they'll ever NOT provide evacuation plans for citizens to go UP. Unfortunately, in the U.S. we don't have the same codes. Seattle and Portland are brick-built cities. While it's part of their charm, they are death traps for those inside and pedestrians in the streets. When (and it will happen) a powerful earthquake, followed by a tsunami happens in these cities, the horror will be incredible. I will blame the government for not ensuring the safety of the people.

I experienced a lot of earthquakes here in the Philippines but this one scares me more thinking that my location lied on the Pacific ring of fire..
They had to have been saying “when will it stop!?!” I believe that shaking lasted for over 5 minutes. And for us to watch these people recording, realizing that some of them would not be alive an hour later, is just really difficult to fathom. With the New Year quake, I just feel so terrible for those who lost their lives and their families. God be with them all. ✌🏻🤍

All of the houses at 11mins would be destroyed in another few mins from the tsunami.
Isn’t it odd that none of the houses were damaged by the shaking, but they were so structurally weak that they folded up with the tsunami !
