  • BirdLife South Africa is a firm believer that conservation needs to start with conversation.
On Tuesday, 5 April 2022 at 19:00 (SAST), BirdLife South Africa's weekly webinar series ‘Conservation Conversations with BirdLife South Africa’ hosted Dr Dylan Vasapolli, an experienced guide at Birding Ecotours and an avid wider-Gauteng birder.
Despite the Gauteng province hosting South Africa’s largest metro area, this region supports a wide diversity of habitats, and many excellent birding sites. Everything from highveld grasslands to lush tropical wetlands and moist deciduous woodlands are all key features of birding in this area. This region certainly holds some of the best birding within South Africa, as it gives you easy access to tricky resident species such as Melodious Lark and White-bellied Bustard, to more tropical migrants such as Dwarf Bittern and River Warbler, and even downright rare birds such as Wattled Crane. Once a tough ask, seeing 400 species in a calendar year within 100km of Johannesburg and Pretoria is now regularly achieved, and is a testament to the calibre of birding possible in the region.

Truly hope one of the major factors being considered for birding sites recommendation is safety.
