    It's tragic at the time the media in the US publicly mocked these two men - refusing to consider that boys could be abused by their father. There was and is a clear gender bias to sexual abuse. Let's hope there is a retrial.

      Actually, I remember the media seemingly believe them, because that's the impression I was left with (I was in middle school at the time, so my opinions were almost entirely formed by the media itself). What I do recall though, was whether that was viewed as justification for murder or not. The spending spree after the murders really sank them, because it made it seem like, yeah, the abuse was probably bad, but it wasn't bad enough until greed came into play as well.

    • @ZhangtheGreat
      @ZhangtheGreat 6 лет назад +7

      It's not so much gender bias, but that people form their own conclusions and will stubbornly defend those conclusions to the death. Every time someone gets busted for a crime, we immediately take sides despite no exposure to evidence. It's the same with these brothers: in one camp are those who feel they're guilty of manslaughter, and in the other camp are those who only see rich spoiled brats who wanted money. Trying to convince one camp to change their minds is almost impossible.

      The abuse claims were not removed from evidence out of spite. They were taken off the table when Lyle Menendez refused to take the stand when recordings of him boasting about his performance on the first trial were going to be entered into evidence into the second trial. He didn't want to be cross examined. But because the abuse claims were contingent on his direct testimony, his refusal to testify made them moot.
      What he and Erik wanted in the second trial was for their taped testimonies from the first trial to be entered into evidence so that they wouldn't have to testify.
      This wasn't a case of Stanley Weisberg being prejudiced or corrupt. And the sentencing guidelines were proper and just. Especially where it relates to the mother. You don't go out to your car to reload your weapon after you just pumped six shotgun bullets into your mother and then claim self defense.

    • @Muirmaiden
      @Muirmaiden 4 года назад +6

      @@jstephenj There are no recordings that damage Lyle's credibility. The Norma Novelli tapes were ruled upon and the judge felt that there was nothing of significance on them. Martha Shelton, who claimed to have a tape of Lyle saying. "We snowed half the country, now we have to snow the other half", later admitted that it was a lie, orchestrated by Dominick Dunne, who paid her to lie in his Vanity Fair articles on the case: nypost.com/2004/05/14/she-says-he-dunne-her-wrong/?fbclid=IwAR0eg47yN2XAArzMNJuFBFGe7rS4ajpQIh8rSV3Q8yzRQPgRWXUBClV1Fxc
      The judge didn't allow most of the defense witnesses to testify until the penalty phase to determine sentencing in the second trial. The judge and the DA's Office were desperate for a conviction and there was a political agenda involved.

      I don't remember if the battered women's syndrome had been established, although, it has never been given the weight it was intended in actual court cases, but these two fit the criteria. It was pretty clear that their father was a brutal, sociopath, and I believed the brothers' testimonies
      I think the problem was not even that they lied about it, it was the spending sprees COMBINED with the lies, and they killed both parents, although their mother was not exactly mother of the year. Also, if those 2 were cut loose back then, I think they would have ended up
      causing harm to themselves and others. You can't murder your parents, or anyone, with a shotgun, and expect the mindset they had developed to be encapsulated and not affect their whole lives. I hope they get released either way. They've served enough time, and I think have used it to understand themselves and their crime.

    Sexual abuse in children damages them on so many levels. It is like a bomb going off deep underground. They are changed forever. The trauma is so horrific caused deliberately and sadistically by a dependent parent whom their survival depends upon, in this case 'Jose Menendez - their Father. Eric the younger of the two brothers described his father as "brutal, painful and torturous'. He was a dominant man who expected perfection. He had a powerful presence and they were afraid of him. What has happened in this case is 'the money' piece (their wealth) has got in the way of the truth and motive and the labels such as 'spoilt rich kids' has stuck. The focus on rolex watches and fast cars is irrelevant and distracted too many truths behind it. Money buys the toys in this world over, they had it , it was not new to them, they had grown up with it, it's very different and was not motive. When you strip away the money and look at the facts we see it clear. When these men spoke in Court they were like 'children' boys who were still stuck in the terror of what their father did to them, the outrage, the injustice of it and the pain and damage that had done. They were still stuck inside 'frozen in trauma' and the betrayal. They were unable to articulate because 'like younger boys' they once were being abused with no protection from those who should have protected them. They had been sexually exploited when young onwards, their outside appearance did not match their inside appearance. Inside they were those young boys in pain and shock. Their mother - Kitty Menendez they describe as a 'woman in pain who was an alcoholic and suicidal' and how she was an 'enabler'., she did not protect these men as boys when they were children and she knew it was said their whole lives what he was doing to them but would not let 'anything ruin the family'. Many powerful people have a public personality and a private personality (even poor people money aside) their father - Jose Menendez did. Sexual abuse is done in secret, where no one sees so no one tells all over the world. Who was going to believe them? They had to live up to such high ideals for their father and the appearance of the family mattered greatly to all - including Kitty Menendez who denied her two son's reality and that her husband was physically, emotionally and sexually abusing them. She has been described by Lyle Menendez as being 'emotionally battered' by him herself. Deception was at the heart of this family.

    My mother was a horrible mother but on the outside was perfect and charming. Once my mother passed away I called each of her sisters that was still alive and told them how abused I was and nobody believed me! Not even her own family my own family. Thankfully they are all dead now on both sides. we were told within an inch of our lives to never speak of what happens inside the house outside the house so we didn't. In 2004 my brother committed suicide but I was too tough and I outlived my mother! I had more balls than all the men in my family! She came close but I was not going to allow her to break me however she did take every ounce of self-esteem I ever could have had and I ran away to marry at 23 a shredded human being. You don't recover well from that any kind of abuse and my brother was 10 years older than me and he molested me. My dad was my hero and he wasn't treated very well by my mother either but he stayed because of me I was his princess daughter!

NO. these are likely dangerous murderers and there is no saying that they wouldn't do it again. why put the rest of the public at risk? of course I dont know all the facts, I just stumbled on this case. they claim they were abused; in my mind, it doesnt excuse the killings but I could see it being justified for a lighter sentence than life but honestly they killed the mom too.... and she didnt even directly abuse them, if what they're saying is true. it all fits into the narrative of them killing the parents strictly for money. anyway norway has among the lightest sentences in the world and their recitivism rate is very low so who knows maybe that would be a better model but implementation in the US may not translate as smoothly

      I don't think telling the roommates about the abuse was part of the plan. Lyle only told Donovan Goodreau about the abuse after Donovan revealed to Lyle his own molestation. Lyle became extremely emotionally distraught upon hearing this and only then revealed to Donovan that he had been molested by his father. That doesn't sound like a preconceived plan to tell them.

I am really annoyed about the fact that both roomats think this is kind of a silly joke because for one side they tell the journalist that Lyle has told both of them that he and his brother have been abused by their dad but in the next moment their response to Megyn Kelly question is : I don't know anything about it and if there is a tap which recorded it I would be shocked!! I mean what the tell???, if thats true , then both of the roomates just put an act on because they don't want anything to do with that... jj yeah I really don’t understand this either. I get that the roommate who also suffered abuse may be less inclined to tell his story, but to suddenly have them both turn around and state no abuse was ever discussed with the brothers, doesn’t sit right with me. I believe the brothers were severely abused and that they should be given a retrial to hear ALL of the evidence. If I knew something about their case that could’ve changed the outcome of their sentence, I really couldn’t live with myself if I had lied or hidden that. I’m not sure how the two roommates can be ok about withholding evidence and continuing to uphold something that’s not true.

      The evidence wasn’t allowed to be shown in the second trial and some of the jurors said later after they got the information that if they heard that during the trial they wouldn’t have convicted them of first degree murder.

    They both look so good, handsome. I never watched their trial but I heard they bought expensive cars and such. I judged them on that. Now I am hearing about this trial and I feel terrible I thought they were guilty. I only hope they get out soon. Should never have been imprisoned in the first place. I cannot believe this happened over 30 yrs ago.

    Free them! They have suffered enough! And they said if they were molested why didn’t tell anyone?! Well they did!

    They killed a MONSTER!!! It was hard for them to confide in anyone because first, it was appalling and shameful especially since the abuser was their father. As for the spending, it symbolized rebellion and victory at the same time because they have finally defeated the monster and its accomplice.

    i think its really disgusting that people automatically think they just wanted money. how many stories have been unearthed about child abuse that made people's jaws drop in disbelief? those negative reactions is exactly why people (kids or adults) dont speak up. no one argued whether or not they killed them. the real argument was the punishment they deserved. they did not deserve life without parole. we lock them up forever but let people walk freely for killing their own toddlers.... smh

      Maybe I am a cynic, but why did the cousin wait almost 3 decades to produce that letter? If the father was molesting them, the letter might have convinced the jury to sentence them with the possiblity of parole

    • @Milkdudpuff

      It wasn't the cousin who produced the letter. The cousin is deceased. His mother found it recently.
