Thanks for confirming the heat sinks I need I wasn't sure if it would fit I've been staring at it for a couple days before I found your channel but now you helped me make my purchase thank you very much amigo
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it.
Stacking thermal pads turns the original pad into an insulator, which will eventually increase temps.
Thank you for watching Video, I appreciate it. So the sticker is a thermal pad and I should remove it, thank you for letting me know.
dont remove the sticker it is a heat spreader and helps with cooling when you put a pad ontop they have metal and thermal goo on the bottom, DONT remove the sticker it will mess with temps@@KingArakonGaming
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate you. Thank you for letting me know I’ll keep it on the NVME
I removed the sticker on day 1 no issues here@@itsquiwi8780
@@jedvaulten02 its made out of metal and has thermal apoxy on it to stick... Look it up leave it on and it helps show proof it doesn't work sight some sources because gamers nexus has proven this but you always gotta be right dont ya?
From what I understand this is one of those "it works but it shouldn't" mods. The high speed gen4 nvmes (the 7gb read/write speed drives) get too hot inside the Ally, so keeping a gen3 with a thermal pad back there might be better
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I’m still going through testing but so far everything is good will update in January.
they get hot but not enough for it to malfunction or cause damage even without a heatsink, with the heatsink you shouldn't have to worry about it even if you were running the ally at full power while downloading stuff for hours straight.
@@xKillZone99 thank you for watching the video I appreciate it.
Gen3 didn't work in mine at all, only gen4 did.
This is what I have been waiting for
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it.
Now do a 50wh battery increase mod
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I’ll definitely look into that mod.
Asus should do Ally owners a solid by upgrading each Ally with a ssd upgrade like this for 1 TB for FREE. Similar to when you have to take your truck to the dealership because of a recall they fix it absolutely for FREE.
but yea this is Asus we are talking about it ain't gonna happen.
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I 💯% agree
I plan on doing the same mod to my Ally with a Kingston 2tb ssd
I wonder how much the increased transfer speed benefits game performance
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I’ll try adding updated speeds soon.
Asus shud just consider giving gamers 32gb and 2280 option next yr with ryzen 8050U Ally 2
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I totally agree.
Nice video bro thanks for the info!
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate you.
this is cool thank you for the video if you can test the ssd thermal please
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. 3 hrs of gameplay on Forza Motorsport and 2hrs of gameplay on Cyberpunk 2077 the highest the SSD got was 62*c.
Heads up nvme failure rate at 70 degrees is 90 percent... Wish I had know before I did this as well burned 2 2280 because they were hitting 84 degrees on top on the apu.... Be careful telling people to do this mod..
Hi Kag. My question is this. They gave me the Asus Rog Ally, they are still in their unopened box. I want to put your same 4TB hard drive, I have to transfer data from one disk to another. Because it is in its box without opening the console
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. If it's unopened you won't have to transfer anything. Just install the new drive close system back up make sure there's no sd card plugged in and plug your Ally into power. Now hold the volume down button and press the power button to turn on the Ally. It should boot to the Bios menu. Press Y to exit EZ mode and then go to the advance tab. select ASUS cloud Recovery and press A to start the recovery. You'll have to connect to Wi-Fi to begin the download.
That screw kit is 30$ :{ 4$ musta been a dream.
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. If you go through the app right now there’s a $20 coupon off. But you are correct, when I purchased it it was on sale.
I think you should use some hear resistance pad or tap for preventing heat going from apu to ssd
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. So far the SSD hasn’t gone over 63*c and maintains that temperature during long gameplay sessions.
@@KingArakonGaming has been few months since this how is it going with the mod still reliable or better use a bigger heat sink I dont want to risk it and neither cut the case of the rog for adding the bigger heatsink
Could you update us on long term on this mod that you did so far how is it going?
@alexreyes3000 Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I haven't hand any issues with the mod it has run perfectly since I upgraded the NVME. I have since upgraded to the ROG ALLY X and will be swapping the NVME into the X.
Now that you can use 2280 drives, there really isn't any reason to use the Ally's faulty SD Card reader.
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I agree 💯 %
Yeah, now it's totally justified that the product isn't fully functional and will destroy your other components
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. Let’s hope the next revision won’t have as many issues.
@@KingArakonGaming you're welcome dude. Seems they should have prioritized and taken care of the issue by now but yes hopefully it gets fixed in the next update.
@@raiusdaltar1483It's been fixed since August.
i was going to do these but then i started to read stuff about the adapters being bad, and people killing their SSD, for heat concers also opting not to get a fast drive the one that the rog ally has is fine, which is a micron 2400 which the 2tb goes for 200
Yeah, I bought the 2TB 2400. The P3 plus is the same spec. The adapter really is a hit or miss. Took me 3 from the same seller to get a working one.
I got everything you have here except the thermal stickers. Well long story short my case doesn’t close completely something gets caught and leaves a bump on the back of my system and I think it may be the thick thermal sticker on the SSD drive, anyone else think it’s something else??
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I’ve heard the same from a couple of people. There is one plastic stand off that is pushing down on the SSD just twist it off and it will sit normally.
@@KingArakonGamingworked out lol thank you!!
Did you have to cut off plastic pieces off the back cover to make it fit together correctly?
Yes you are correct you do have to remove a couple of plastic pieces where the new nvme makes the turn into the body of the Ally.
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. Thank you for the advice I appreciate you, and I haven't run into any issues as of yet. The SSD temps are good and the cpu temp hasn't changed verse having the 2230 SSD installed. I'll definitely take a look at the back cover you mentioned 👍
Great video ! How is the ssd mod doing? Any heating issues? Thank you
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. All good no issues at all.
@@KingArakonGaming thanks I appreciate it!
@@lionsden7626 No problem

Bro I Appreciate You watching the video.
Any reason why didn't go with the FN970 for faster read and write speeds?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. The FN950 had an awesome deal on black Friday.
Will the acer Predator GM7000 4TB NVMe Gen4 Gaming fit? It comes with a thin heatsink
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. Yes it will fit, there will be a small plastic standoff that you will have to twisted off so that the back sits flush. You’ll notice which one because it will push against your heat sink when you go to close the back.
@@KingArakonGaming So after checking, it's not a single sided SSD. So unfortunately it will not fit.
From every video I've seen of that nvme it only shows single side of memory its unfortunate its not working for you.
So how high are the temperatures. Could you test that with crystal mark info?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. The highest it has gotten under load is 63*C
How thick is the thermal pad you use? 0,5mm or 1mm? Thank you
I noticed the ssd is setting on top of the wires for the battery. If the ssd gets too hot do you think it would melt the wires?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I haven't had any issues as of yet. Since the ssd has the thermal pads and copper heatsink it's pulling all heat away from the bottom of the ssd.
I thought I was flexin with my 2tb 😂
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it.
hi can i usa ----FN970 4TB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe 1.4 Internal Solid State Drive with Heatsink - Speeds up to 7,400MB/s, Configure DRAM Cache, Compatible PS5 Internal SSD
for this rog ally?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. The SSD will work but the heatsink from what I've seen maybe too large to fit in the ROG ALLY.
not putting an extra thermal pad can be a better option because of the existing one. My ssd has a pre-installed pad like yours and still it makes some dent on the back, do you have same problem with yours?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate It. No bump on the back that I can feel.
I added my SSD without any pad, it fits fine without a bump on the back, however when I added 1 copper heat sink, the same one in here, it adds a bump. You can still force the back cover closer, however there are some plastic bits on the back that press down on the SSD. I just got a rotary tool with plans to shave down those plastic parts so they don't push down on it. I don't know how this video showed them being installed with heatsink without the pressure on the back plate.
@fauzanmahmed Thank you for watching the video I Appreciate it. Mine closed right up I’ll check on that though.
i did this mod with a 4TB drive and it died in 3 weeks. i however did not use the copper heat shield. so my question is did your drive last with it on at all?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. Sorry to hear that happen to your drive, Mine is still working fine and I use it everyday.
@@KingArakonGaming ok thanks for the fast replay. buying a new drive and the heat shield
Did you do a speed test? if yes how much is
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it.
Sequential Read 1754
Random Read 1756
Sequential Write 1075
did you use the kapton tape?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. In this mod, I didn't use Kapton Tape.
Hi, do you experience any nvme failing because i got fry by using this device? some people reported that their nvme got FRY using this device
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. No issues as of yet NVME is working fine and stays at 63*c temp
Dude got the Rog looking like a PSP 😅😅😅 i can just tell buddy a giant
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. Yeah watched the video back and was like wow lol.
do you have a video on how to clone?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. Unfortunately I didn’t record one but I’ve been thinking of doing one.
does the ally still cooks the sd card??
Thank you for watching the video. I appreciate it. There was an update that supposedly fixed the issue with the SD card slot but after it ruined my 1TB SD card I haven't tried it again since.
The first models that came out were the ones with the sd card failure if you got your ally between now and 2 months ago there is no problem with the sd card reader just letting you know
I'm interested to know how it's still working a few months later. The Ally gets pretty hot as it stands, and I've seen a bunch of horror stories of people throttling their devices after putting in the higher-speed drives.
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I will keep this post updated with the results for the future.
@@KingArakonGaming no problem, I'll check back in every so often :)
The ally gets pretty hot? I run turbo on it pretty much everything and I really don’t even feel it get that hot 😂 you probably have a defective one
@@nugzmedallion8929mine never gets hot
@@LittleKiller1476psnit gets really hot, at least in turbo, to avoid burning any SD I personally have a custom fan curve
where did you get the rubber bands? or is that not needed?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. The rubber bands are included with the heat sink and thermal pads.
@@KingArakonGaming sorry to bother you, is there copper sink on both sides of the ssd?
@DAZELL18 it comes with two but I only use one on the top.
The blue thermal pad killed my SSD :(
Don’t not use it between the SSD and copper heatsink
@@DAZELL18 I'm sorry to hear that mine is still working fine, Did you take off the thin layer of plastic from the thermal pad before applying it to your SSD?
Your hands make the Ally look small 💀
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. Very true lol.
cloning is a nightmare 3 software all not cloning help?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I used Macrium Reflect to clone the drive.
Do a video
- ROG ALLY VS ALIENWARE
- change everything to match an Alienware gaming laptop
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. That would be a dope video thank you for the suggestion.
What case sre you using?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. This is the case I’m using

@@KingArakonGaming Thank you, is this case a perfect fit? Has your 4tb SSD been running good with out over heating. I am looking at upgrading and purchasing a case.
@carnagelan it does fit great and I love the top piece that covers the screen when not in use. The SSD has been working great and no overheating issues at all.
@@KingArakonGaming Thank you man. Yes the top piece looks awesome. I think i will purchase this
nice
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it.
I am using this adapter with a lexar NM790. It works fine, even running at boosted 30W the ssd goes upto 65 C, without heatsink. But as soon as I put a heatsink on ( 3mm thick ) I could not get the full power of 30W, it runs around 20w and cpu thermal throttling. The game performance is even worse than 18W manual mode. As soon as I remove the heatsink it works all fine again.
Anyone else experience the same ?
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I haven't experienced that issue as of yet but will update this reply if I do.
Most modders advise using either a Gen3 Crucial P3 or Gen3 Sabrent Rocket (~3500mb/s). Both are reliable, are fast enough, come with a thermal strip fitted (no need to fit another) and they don't get nearly as hot as some of the other SSD's on the market. Try and avoid the Gen4 and Gen5 SDD's as they can get too hot and draw more power, which can either limit you down to 20W or cause crashes and reboots. The Gen4/5 SSD's are also more expensive and don't really offer much in the way of benefits over a Gen3 SSD, whenever gaming anyway.
@@fafski1199 in my case, it works well with Lexar NM790. without the extra heatsink. but as soon as I put heatsink on, it cause the problem. I have tried to add and remove heatsink two times it's just the same problem. that's why I am wondering if anyone else expericened the same.
Now I am just running it without extra heatsink, it will get upto 70C with heavy load, normally under 60 with game play. Not sure if the latest 2 BIOS update changed anything.
@@fafski1199You can run the P3 plus. It's the same spec as the stock 2400. Seems everyone recommends the P3 plus due to testing.
This video should last only 4 or 5 min...
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I definitely could have cut it down a bit. I'd probably get more views if it was around the 5 minute mark.
How to fry your ssd...
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. The SSD is working without any issues.
Bro thats Gsh#$ MOD gotta do
thank you for watching the video. I appreciate it.
hope you got it cheap...the Ally is trash compared to the competition. I have the LG, and oh boy......Asus has some grounds to cover.
Thank you for watching the video I appreciate it. I have the Legion also, yeah man it's nice I'll be doing a video on that one also. Just want to wait to see if the mod scene comes up with anything creative for it.
I have both and the rog ally beats it by a bunch lol I notice stutters and screen tearing on my legion go meanwhile my ally doesn’t do that. Vrr is definitely a game changer
