Great video, Jeff. It's great to see your avocado grafts took no damage. We had a similar frost here last night, just slightly below freezing in some areas of the garden. I'm sorry to hear your fruits were taken while you were away. I don't know why some people think they can just help themselves.
I'm in Florida and had a freeze too. My freeze was last Friday night 01/24/25. It got to 31, just like your freeze. Luckily, I didn't have any frost. My avocados and mangoes did fine. Banana's got burned badly, and not happy about that because I want them to store a lot of energy for their fruiting later this year. Pineapples had mixed results. Some that were protected from the wind did better, and others that were more exposed got hit pretty bad, but they'll live. The citrus did fine. The trees such as the peach, pomegranate and Asian Pear were actually thankful for the freeze. The lychee did fine. Passion vines did fine. Guava was fine. Barbados Cherry was fine. Glad this horrible weather is done for this year. Sun's been shinning every day since the freeze and the temperature is beautiful. Good to see your stuff survived.
Well you didn’t get as cold as I did. I’m in central Yolo County, rural area. Two nights ago it got to 25 in my stone fruit orchard. The areas where I have young citrus and avocados got to “only” 26-27. I have frost bags, lights, and shop fans on these young trees. I hope I was able to keep them protected. I’ll do an assessment later today.
I'm not surprised your mature trees handled 31F without damage. We've had 26 days below 32F this winter and 25 of my seedlings are still alive. We had some ~23F mornings that killed 4-6 seedlings down to the roots. All of these are in pots, between 6 and 9 months old, so not even big and established and they still handled those freezes relatively well. Most of them are even seedlings of store-bought Hass fruits, so not expected to be particularly cold hardy. A fairly thin cover to prevent radiative cooling is going to go a looong way for frosty mornings. Even then, some fried leaves are to be expected and I'd consider it minor/superficial damage.
I brought my potted Reed in after a low of 31F. We've since had a low of 28.6F. still zone 9B type weather if we can hold for the remainder of winter in Victoria, BC.
Modesto here too, do avocado trees have a heavy yield every other yr??? I have a Little cado, last yr 20 some and this past year only 3. I fertilized it last yr os the only difference 😢Thank you !!
All my seedlings are doing fine after these 4 days freezes. My grafted lamb hass and reeds are doing ok too in their pots. Avocados are stronger than everyone thinks
Sorry about the fruit theft. That’s really bad. I had someone help themselves to some rare pomegranates a few months ago. I’ll be putting up signage and cameras.
We went down to 20 degrees plus it snowed it stayed below freezing for 2 days. Lost 14 avocados only ones survived was lila, fantastic and brogdon. Mexicola grande has some green leaves on it but I'm not sure if it will make it.
My trees with a sheet of plywood on top or blanket over a wire frame did the best even Pinkerton had no damage with a blanket on top, Jan 29th could freeze but warming up soon.

Thanks for sharing Jeff!
Thanks! I was surprised to see how well they did.

For us in California our average last day of frost is today , hopefully it don’t freeze.
Happy growing

@@TropicalGardenGuyso far damage seems minimal.

I agree, what interested me the most was how well some of the new varieties would do since some have never seen a freeze
@@TropicalGardenGuy Yes, the first freeze is definitely nerve-wracking. Very glad your trees are fine!

Some are alternate bearing
Hello Jeff, I would like to know how your Kwai Muk react to the froze ?
Zero damage.
It is actually in a growth flush
How are your mango trees handling the sub-freezing temps?
Doing great.
I have them planted nest to the house.
That’s pretty impressive. I havent had issues at 40f, but that’s not really that cold lol. And fruit thieves are the worst!
Yes that’s true , but I do live in California… lol
Hi Jeff,
From Zone 9b in Modesto, California.
All my seedlings are doing fine after these 4 days freezes. My grafted lamb hass and reeds are doing ok too in their pots. Avocados are stronger than everyone thinks
Agreed!👍
I’ve been wondering if Macadamia would work in the valley… any nuts yet?
I grew one for about 20 years .
It produced so many nuts that fell on my new truck, I had to remove it

Ive had a couple stolen in past, this time was crazy

That sux… try try again
I had leaf burn on about 20 trees at 30-31 range I think it's the duration of time that got me, but trees will recover fine.
