You may think it is an "amazing quote" but it's an absolutely false statement. If you don't think there is an American "culture" then try living in another country for a couple of years (not just vacationing or visiting). American culture is the very thing much of the world envies and seeks to imitate. Nonetheless, Fran L., is a fascinating person and great fun to listen to, though much of what she says is not exactly practical to say the least. I remain however, always interested as she is an entertaining and unique personality.
MrJeeves4me you completely missed her point. You’re shocked by the statement, but it’s true. American “culture” would be Native American culture. Modern America is not founded on long established cultural norms - it’s founded on an idea, or series of ideas. Freedom, liberty, justice - they’re not a culture, they’re a system of ideals. The “new world”. America, for its ~243 years has ALWAYS been a melting pot of other “cultures”, a mishmash of people, all leaving behind ways of life in pursuit of the American way. But it has never been a standalone culture.

Well, yes, it is what it is, is unfortunate that a country has to pay for the issues that other countries have but at the end of the day people are people and they want to live better, survive the crysis and will do anything for that, even if it means being illegal in a country. You can't blame the countries for not wanting illegal inmigration nor the people trying to escape their countries.
The problem is NOT tourism, it's how that income is divided and squandered. Btw, not everyone who works in housekeeping WANTS to move up. Imagine if housekeepers were paid something in the range of $25-30 pr hour, on a solid contract? The money that would be injected into the economy would be incredible & would take place IMMEDIATELY. Now THAT would make sense. Instead, they're cut to the bone as far as pay & benefits whilst the CEO/CIO/COO walk away with the bag of loot. Have a re-think on that bit. RE: textiles, then & now.
