Paul, I have completly stolen your idea for the cook kit apart from the spoon as I couldn't get one, had to go plastic. I tried it last week and it works great. Thank you for the videos.
I'm definitely going to do that as well. I just use a sea to summit collapsible mug for my coffee and it fits on the top of my Alpkit pot, but that idea of yours is perfect for porridge and for also using with some other foods. I can't believe I didn't think of that one.
Genius idea re the cup. I’ve got this set up and will do same. Just a quickie but how did you cut the bottle? And why cut @ 400ml, is there a limit with the gas canister? Chees Neil
I've just bought the micro Sawyer water filter you used. How often do you find you need to clean it with the syringe? Also, did you take dried meals with you on the WHW?
theteacherinfo because the water I was filtering was clear I didn't clean the filter until after I finished the WHW and was home. If the water has a lot of sediment in it you'll need to clean the filter more often, you will find that the flow rate slows down. And yes I did use freeze dried meals.
Great kit, I always have a scouring pad in there too , I cut it down so I have a mini one, about the size of a matchbox, but obviously not as a thick. genius move with the cup!
Thanks. Yes I do put a small scouring pad in the cook kit but I forgot to put it in this video. It wasn't until after I had uploaded the video that I realize my mistake.
Hi Paul, I was in Go Outdoors at the weekend and noticed the 'flared' bottom seam on the Coleman gas canisters is now recessed so it's diameter is slightly less than the outer dia of the canister. They must have addressed to make it easier to nest inside pots/cups. I know you created a workaround for this in your kit with the plastic cup. Anyway, thought I'd let you know. Cheers, Justin.
Good idea for the cup. I pretty much have the same philosophy for a seperate water only and tea/ food only containers, plastic for drinking as i dont want to burn my mouth and better insulator :). I carry a platic mug. Im pretty sure it was a primus make that sell this 2 container method in retail with the plastic container on the outside? Saw it in uk shop a month ago . i can try something similar and use all my existing kit except for the mug so thanks for the idea :)
My flash lite weighs 383g including stuff sac and spork and is more compact than the standard Jet boil. I've just bought myself a Terra Nova Solar Photon 1 which is 865g and more than half the weight of my Terra Nova Polar micro lite! It's only rated as 3 season not 4 like the Polar but will see how it stands up to the Atlantic winds on the Hebridean way next week...
Once again, a super helpful video. Thank you. But have you now gone stoveless? I find a cup of HOT chocolate in the evening is the perfect finale to a walk and wild camp. But shedding weight so you can really enjoy a thru hike is the TOP priority.
Genius idea re the cup. I’ve got this set up and will do same. I like the weight saving, use to use JetBoil but this is better. Did 1st part of the Cape Wrath Trail last year and realised I need to cut weight, completing it next year. Just a quickie but how did you cut the bottle? And why cut @ 400ml, is there a limit with the gas canister? Chees Neil
Hi Neil thanks for your question, I used a hacksaw to cut the bottle and then some fine sandpaper to smooth the top off. Its not a perfectly straight cut but it will do. Why I cut the bottle at 400ml is going to be tricky to describe but here goes. The bottom of the gas canister has a flared piece of metal where the side and bottom are joined, this is too big to fit inside the cup. So the cup has to be shorter than the gas canister. When put together the top of the gas canister touches the bottle of the cup. I hope this helps and I can see that next time I'm out camping I'm going to have to film myself using this setup to better demonstrate how it works together.
Hi, I eat lots of different brands of freeze dried meals and get them from different sellers like, Go Outdoors, Blacks, Cotswold Outdoor, Amazon, Ebay. I try to shop around for the best deals.
@@PaulWillcocks ah i think you were using a generic term! understand...those MH meals are supposed to be way better than the brands you can buy in the UK but impossible to buy here, thank you Paul
I've been debating on getting a cook kit for my WHW trip. I'm not sure how much healthy food I can find along the way but at the same time, I would be winging it on seeing what I could buy/pack with me. At most I think I would like to be able to make tea and maybe porridge in the morning and tea in the evenings but I could do without. How often did you end up using the cooker? I can't remember seeing it much from watching the videos.
I used my cook set for making porridge, evening meals and coffee the 3 times that I wild camped also a couple of times just making coffee when I stayed a camp sites. There are lots of places where you can stop for something to eat like pubs, hotels, cafe and shops that I think a cook set is unnecessary and when I walk the WHW again I won't bother to take it and just pack some extra oat bars. This should make the pack lighter. Hope this helps.
Nice set up . I got the same burner but went for the 900 ml pot . Might have to switch to the 650! How you finding your duplex shelter? Is it adequate for windy conditions ? Thinking about getting one . Did u buy it direct ? Thanks in advance
I haven't used the Duplex in windy conditions yet so can't comment on that but I would always try to find a sheltered spot. I don't think the Duplex was really designed for wind so wind camping on top of a hill in the Lake District would be a big No No. I did buy the Duplex direct from Zpacks and was surprised when I had to pay an import tax so that made in expensive tent even more expensive.
Nice cooking outfit , 240 grams or 8.24 ounces is pretty light not counting the fuel canister. At times I use a Evernew Appalachian set at 5.67 ounces or 161 grams ( not counting the alcohol ) which burns denatured alcohol or wood. The Human Gear Go Bites Duo spoon , spork combo weighs .75 ounces or 22 Grams and a book of paper matches I don't even weight. Total outfit is 183 grams or 6.45 ounces.
I prefer to use gas over alcohol or wood because it easier to control, but I've started to look into going stoveless to save weight, the problem of finding gas canisters and the hassle of cooking altogether. It all comes down to personal preference and the type of hike.
Paul, I have completly stolen your idea for the cook kit apart from the spoon as I couldn't get one, had to go plastic. I tried it last week and it works great. Thank you for the videos.
Thief lol. I've used this cook kit for a couple of years now and can't see myself changing it.
That's a great idea for making a cup Paul. I must do the same, as I don't like making porridge in my pots either. Atb Glenn.
It took me ages to find a plastic container that fitted inside my cook pot and allowed the gas canister to fit inside it.

We think alike, I used to use a collapsible mug of my coffee then swapped it for my homemade cup.

Very nice! I allowed myself to copy the idea of recycling the bottle. Thanks, Paul.
I lot of people have copied my idea for the homemade cup. ATB
Excellent idea, the cutoff plastic bottle insert! I shall try it out the week after next!
yes it works very well

Thanks for the info. I will have to check them out.
Thanks Paul, just cut down a nalgene bottle myself, great idea:)
Thanks for your comment.
Great idea for the cup, thanks for sharing.
Thanks, it works for me.
Yes I agree, what a great idea for the cup
Danny Eugene Waits thanks

Thanks for your comments. It's always nice to hear that my videos are helping others.
Excellent
Thanks
Nice kit, i prefer a jet boil lite to this kind of set up. It weighs more but i like my creature comforts when I'm walking/backpacking 😊
I also have a Jetboil Flash which is great for car camping but I find it takes up too much room in my pack and weighs a lot more.
My flash lite weighs 383g including stuff sac and spork and is more compact than the standard Jet boil. Good luck on the Hebridean Way. I've started looking into doing that trail next year.
Thanks! I will try and post pictures from there as I go along on my Instagram account instagram.com/snowymatrix/
If you are still looking at the Hebridean Way here is my video of my thru-hike of the trail! ruclips.net/video/MSNJzPDEJ8c/видео.html

No I haven't gone stoveless yet but depending on what trail I'm hiking I may in the future.
I have the same set up myself except the nalgine bottle cup. I might nick that idea! 👍
Go ahead. Lots of other people had used my idea.
Great idea thanks
Thanks. Glad you found my video useful.
Rudimentary but very functional ... Cheers.
Seamus3051 yes it all works well together and is nice and compact

@@PaulWillcocks that was very well explained Paul, thank again🙂
Great video, thanks. Source for that folding spoon? That’s the longest folding one I’ve seen so far.
The spoon is great for freeze dried meals. amzn.to/32HF31t I will put this link in the video description as well.
Does the Hi-Gear cup cope with boiling water? Nalgene has a 100deg C limit.
Thanks
I'm not sure what the limit for the Hi-Gear bottle is but I haven't had any problems making coffee with boiling water in it.
Hi where do buy your mountain house meals from please? Thanks for video 👍

Whats the size of the bottle you used for the cup ..genius idea tho
I think it was a 1L bottle
Thanks
Great video. Maybe I missed it, but what is the weight of the bowl you made?
40 grams

Yes , I might have to think of a plan 'b' .ta

A bit sad to have to include the weight of bags and lighter for people?
yes maybe, but I prefer to include all the information because someone will always ask otherwise
not bad.... too heavy for me tho, lol
sometimes I don't bother taking this cook kit if I'm only going out of 1 night wild camping on Dartmoor so that's even lighter.
