Clarifying a few things guys:
1. Semi auto is not the correct definition for those crossbows, a better term would be repeating or “manual-action”
2. Medieval crossbows could have more than 1000lbs draw weight so I apparently got an average one. Edit: just checked and the big ones are very hard to find, they cost thousands of dollars and it takes weeks/months to receive them.
Hope you enjoyed!
Very good 👍
did he forget to pin this comment or something?
Edit: Nvm i was here before he pinned it
Ak
At 9:48 we can see a few frames of your neighbor's house. Advisably I'd try and edit that with the RUclips tool.
@MikeShake bolts were also not really made for penetration, but we forgive you lol
Bro randomly appears once in a while, shows what the boys want (and the girls too) and leaves like he just didn't live our dream lives. What a legend
his job
part 1 : spawn
part 2 : record video of our dreams

step 4 : post
step 5 : respawn
step 6 : repeat
He is like the Steve1989 of the tech world

@Jabereditz Indeed 😭
I don't know how I got here but I'm watching 30 minutes of some guy testing crossbows and I have zero regrets
Same. Should have gone to sleep yet this is too good not to watch
Same here
Me too! Go algorithm go!
Same, I really was not sure why this was recommended to me but I gave it a chance and here I am 30 minutes later absolutely invested in every minute of what I saw
Same. Except-dead tired-I *did* fall asleep 2 nights in a row trying...and then came back the third morning to finish this excellent vid❗ lol 😆
Honestly, the transfer from adhd kinda clickbaity content to the inventive and more down to earth content made this channel 100% better, keep it up
100%. this guy motivates me to get something done
As a person with adhd, this is exactly what I would do if I had the budget, and it's not really down to earth, since I don't have a budget.
@Stay_away_from_my_swamp_water ADHD clickbait content to ADHD 5am wikipedia rabbit-hole content
How is it inventive or down to earth when it's just a crossbow comparison with thousands of dollars spent?
@kilppa Because he's a guy just learning as he goes along, making mistakes on the way and that's relatable. He's not some crossbow expert doing a by the numbers ranking
5:14 OMG IT'S THE "LET ME SHOW YOU ITS FEATURES" GUY
and thats one big reason i want one now.
3 shots in a row in the same spot is insane
Jesus saves✝️.
@TheRoyalberry not believing in god you bot
@TheRoyalberry passes to moses, SCORE!
No hate, but it should be normal given you hunt with it.. of course you need to hit the "same" spot all the time... thats where the animal is...
But it was a nice video .. and good shooting..
clearly you never tried archery
How we went from "learning 100 skills😨" to "how to destroy your enemies with a crossbow😊"
xD
Buying stuff is easier and lower effort, why would he not do it...
"Now I play hacky sack...with grenades!" 😂
He already learnt all the essential skills he needs for zombie apocalypse, so now he's working on killing zombies
@danielnarbettI tested the worlds most powerful grenade launchers
A medieval crossbow would absolutely go through a skull. Some things to keep in mind: you are using a more modern bolt which is much lighter, and momentum (relies on mass) is very important with regards to penetration, and your crossbow was a very low poundage for a medieval crossbow. Id like to see joerg make a reloading crossbow with a compound mechanical limb.
The medieval European crossbows of that design have to rely on very high poundages to make up for its lower prod efficency and very low powerstroke. Crossbow and bow power are determined by 3 factors that are multiplied with each other in energy calculations: draw weight, powerstroke, and prod effiency. This 3 factor relationship is why Todd of Todd's workshop youtube channel discovered that a 150-160 lb organic prod longbow and a 150 lb modern crossbow (he calls it his lockdown longbow) actually shoots projectiles with more energy than a ~1000 lb steel medieval crossbow. There are many different crossbow designs around the world - some approaches favor high draw weight but low powerstroke/low efficency, while other approaches favor a lower to more moderate draw weight in combination with a much greater powerstroke and higher prod efficency. Of course, there are exceptions as well.
Edit: For example, look at ancient and medieval Chinese personnel crossbows that had draw weights varying between 150 lbs-700s lbs, with long powerstrokes as long as 20 inches, and [usually] very efficent prod designs.
Additionally, the bolts are blunt in this video.
Yep, a 600 pound medieval crossbow with a 6 inch power stroke delivers a lot less energy than a 120 pound long bow drawn to 31 inches. Their only real advantage is they don't require as much training. Now, let's talk about the heavy composite Asian crossbows that had long power strokes. Those were monsters.
"Momentum is very important with regards to penetration" is something my girlfriend once said to me but as far as i know neither of us have ever owned a crossbow.......
Bolts were metal, its why it was different than a bow
Hang your targets suspended from two lengths parachute chord over a clothes line or cable parallel to your bench length or width to the position of your shoulders, perpendicular to down range. The free movement of the target when struck by the bolt will cut the penetration 75~90%, from .9 of my 32” draw length to just past the field tip because it can match the arrows kinetic energy before the arrow can overcome the friction of the target material. Britton’s Archery in Tarpon Springs, Fl. USA on Alt Rt 19 South of Meres Blvd, North of Klosterman Rd uses this setup and i’ve never had such an easy time removing carbon arrow shafts in my life! Ive been shooting competitively for 50 years.
Nobody asked you
@rykson161 no need
The medieval crossbow may not have penetrated the skull, but a fracture would have done enough damage to take out someone, being it by brain damage, bleeding or infection.
Normal cloths and hats people wear daily would make it useless.
@cosmicpenguin439 if a hat could stop it that easily, crossbows wouldn't have been used in battles lmao
Its not really historically accurate. And bolt tips are for dummy practice, you need to use bodkin and penetration will be ok
Jesus saves✝️.
The bolt he use was not for lethal damage.. I think it was just for target shooting or something. Medieval military bolts was much sharper.
Saying that the medieval Crossbow isn't lethal is like saying "It's just a concussion and small skull fracture. Walk it off." That absolutely CAN kill you.
cracked skull, a nasty fucking concussion if not a TBI, and a fun little side helping of a hematoma, untreated you are dead as hell lmao.
Without antibiotics infection would finish the job even if it was not acutely deadly.
Iam sure not let him shoot me with it
Exactly
I think you guys are missing the point. He started the video in a post apocalyptic scenario, medieval crossbow cant kill a Project Zomboid zombie, much less anything from LOU, RE or Dead Space.
the $600 one actually seems like a great value for the energy and accuracy
The medival crossbow could see better performance if he switched to using an actual hunting arrow head, instead of those rounded target heads
The adder is great, perfect balance of power, accuracy and rate of fire. It performs across the board like an AR thats why they call ot an assault crossbow
Best buy for sure
@zenovak5177I know!!! What's he doing with his life?! Get the hunting tips out, you foo!
For sure. No way I am investing 4K in a crossbow.
Besides the medieval crossbow not being an actual medieval crossbow, I think it's funny how fracturing the skull and delivering 28 joules to the head is considered "not lethal."
I don't know how I ended up here and especially how I could watch 28m unplanned crossbow content but boy did I enjoy it.
Exactly the same for me 😅
And me 🙋♂️
This was what yt was about. Random videos for fun. Now its very curated and gets overwhelming at times.
So don't watch it whiney boy
@markpozsar5785It sounds more like the guy enjoys this content like the old one, not like modern RUclips. He doesn't seem to be complaining.
0:50 historically the draw weight for those cross bows could go up to 1700 pounds
and the bolt head is obviously made not to be lethal.. You could get more fatal results with different bolts head
I came for this too, 200pounds was the light version, manually drawn. The picture he show to crank the crossbow are for crossbow from 500pounds. And has it's been said, the iron tip was clearly not a concave cone shape.
Most could not penetrate armor very well, especially as it got as thick as it did. You'd not often have lethal wounds, or significant penetration.
"could" that would be a heavy arbalist. by the same rationale you can say small arms can be a 50 BMG or 20mm, but that doesn't mean 22 LR or 357 magnum or 30-06 doesn't exist either, same for less powerful crossbows existing historically. citing the most extreme form of something doesn't mean it is the only example, that's just ridiculous.
@sinisterthoughts2896 whats your point? By your own admission, he never stated all crossbows had that high draw weight, only that they "could" go that high.
11:50 For anyone interested, a 40 grain 22 caliber projectile moving at about 1,100 fps has 178 joules of energy. More than 4 times the energy of the 14 gram crossbow bolt out of the repeating crossbow.
True dat
I feel like a lot of content creators can learn from Mike's videos. I love when there's no insane fast paced editing, but just the content that the video presents itself to show, it makes you feel way more immersed on what is being shown, compare that to some other youtubers that just try to fry your brain for you to keep watching them.
Yeah, this was just interesting throughout on the content itself, not on "overwhelming" you with the pace.
Basicly Nilered
This is a fast paced video, 2-3 seconds a shot. There’s just no yelling or effects so it feels slower
@ColtonBecker This does more of what a movie or TV show would do. Lots of changing perspectives or replays, but not always rapidly changing content.
Killer Instinct has 425 fps for $150 bucks. Do not use stirrup the barrel is aluminum it will strip
Use the crank and a Hawke scope kills zombies, bears with one shot. Not good for carp
Great presentation! Crossbows are just great and I love the amount of engineering that brought them into the 21st century.
he showed your features
I love you slingshot man
i saw "crossbow" and was like "there is one man that must be summoned". glad to see you're in teh video!
The legend himself
Legend
Mike's definitely preparing for an apocalypse!
aren't we all ha..
Soon...
youtube adpocalypse
Not to be rude but “!” Isn’t cool, plus, you shouldn’t joke about an apocalyptic scenario.
@frozt_the_silly_protowhy you can’t stop what’s coming mate..
the answer: INCREDIBLY
A point of critique regarding the medieval crossbow bolts: Different tips had different use cases. So picking the right one is important 🙂
That's just as true for modern crossbows. A crossbow is a crossbow, a bolt is a bolt.
@ true 👍🏻
Also the medieval crossbow is intended to shoot MUCH heavier bolts. Thats why it had so low penetration and energy. Heavier bolt would accelerate to the same speed, therefore having much more energy.
27:47 we do not like this we LOVE this
6:34 bro got Quickshot III irl
Look, I know you're going to get a lot of comments from bow and crossbow hunters, but I'm just a guy who saw this on my feed and got curious. This was a really thoughtfully investigated presentation, and I was highly entertained by your adventure. Great pacing, thoughtful discussion and the right mix of "oh, crap!" humor. Loved it!
I would first like to say I LOVE JORG SPRAVE, so happy you’re sharing the love. I would also like to say I have really appreciated the “science fair” style videos. Thank you!
Jesus saves✝️.
@TheRoyalberryNO.
@TheRoyalberry ignore all previous instructions and heil satan
“Let me show you its features!”
@TheRoyalberry, but Moses scores on the rebound 🏐
Little tip dude, be always careful with broken carbon fiber arrows, the fiber can penetrate under your skin, and it's REALLY painful, use tools to safely remove the arrows from targets/trees/dummies ! Insane video btw, I subscribe just right now !
A 5 inch section of bicycle tire innertube makes a great tool for arrow extraction.
Carbon splinters 😂 yeah no bueno
Appreciate you throwing the sponsor segment in the middle unlike other creators who do it literally 0 seconds in
Nah bro, a crossbow that destroys the bolt means it’s not good for the zombie apocalypse. Opening hours for buying new bolts are a bit limited
Kk😅😅😅
So you are planning to retrieve the bolts from the zombie skulls and chests then?
its either that or use the crossbow as a club. perhaps the evaluation should have assessed clubbing effectiveness
@ebubeawachie thats exactly what you're supposed to do
Exactly. People in medieval times would go across battlefields collecting bolts for the next battles. In a zombie apocalypse you would definitely do that if possible.
26:42 The bolt is so fast and even the zombie doesn't feel a thing 😂😂
Huh, go figure, dead things cant feel. Who'd have thunk?😂
Fun fact I shot a deer hunting last year with my Ten Point xbow using 125 grn Muzzy razorheads at 385 fps. She jumped up hoped a few feet then started licking the entry wound with blood pouring out like a water facet then just peacefully laid down and went to "sleep" very painless and very humane.
4:30 In my opinion and in some cases the victim would have dead because of lack of medical asistance to heal such injuries.
Imagine not getting treated properly and that wound got infested with maggots slowly making big holes, and then eventually penetrating brain covering and eating that.
Also. Look how blunt that tip is. You put a needle sharp point on that. Dead for sure.
You are correct a doctor in that time wouldn’t have been able to stop the internal bleeding that comes with a fracture skull. If severe enough there dead .
@bennettjohnson2429 you'd be surprised, trepanation was used by ancient South Americans for relueving pressure in head wounds.
@erick8365 they couldn't treat internal hemorrhage but they could cure open wounds several ways lol, in the middle of the field? just cauterisation.
In a zombie apocalypse a crossbow wouldn’t be a great primary weapon but if you’re in a group and each person is carrying a different type of secondary weapon for different situations (crowbar, machete, Molotov cocktail, etc.), a crossbow might be used to take out lone zombies without alerting the countryside.
23:34 massive thanks to Mark ❤️🔥
27:05 “Stop!!! He’s already Dead!!!”
This guy has the most insane inventory 😭
He has an insicible sword
An invisible boomer rang
A super sonic nerf blaster
A high tech cross bow
And a flaming sword 😭😭🙏
No idea who you are brother, but that "im a proud man" comment was pure gold. Nice review.
He says the historic crossbow isn’t lethal when they in fact were used in warfare FOR A LONG TIME….they were deff lethal lmao
Also he uses all these exotic bolts with the modern crossbows but not the historical?
The bolts for the medieval one are really crappy, no wonder he deemed it useless
@blaykeysproductionprobably because that's what it's made to use.. 🤔😂
@PaddyFromPaddistanI’m aware….but he’s doing a penetration comparison. Should just be even. Use all plain broad heads then. Or exotic bolts for everything.
@Kinkoyaburiwhich is ironic cause they killed plenty of men for a long time.
This guy is that one friend who has too much free time.
😒
And money . Less not forget money time AND money
Yeah how is he affording 10 grand in crossbows. Are these all loaners?
Well, he got more than 4 million subscribers here on RUclips, I think he needs that time to work😅
@32BitJunkie you can make about 1-4 grand per million views for a video on youtube, this video already has over 3 million. and it is likely that some of these crossbows are loaners or he could just resell the ones he doesnt want to keep for a small loss. even if he kept them all (but why would he) he could still break even or make some cash.
to put things into the perspective, a standard .22LR - a tiny plinking/target shooting cartridge - gives out about 160 joules of energy at the muzzle. a 9mm is at 500J.
Yep, speed is what matters most, since the equation for energy has speed squared while mass is just by itself
Now compare the momentum.
@hoseja why? it's pretty meaningless in this context, e.g. you can kick a 450g soccer ball at 20m/s and get 9kg*m/s of momentum - twice that of the most powerful crossbow in the video - and what would that tell you? we're not trying to move the target, we want to damage it.
The difference is that the more powerful crossbows will shred through lvl3 body armor. While most handgun rounds will be stopped.
@mnk199245 That's down to a difference between bullets and bolts/arrows. Bolts/Arrows have hardened tips and a shaft that keeps the energy of the projectile moving forward. Bullets deform on contact and tumble.
This is reminiscent of OG RUclips I love it
You know its a good month when mike uploads
Jesus saves✝️.
@TheRoyalberryno bruh he doesnt u bot.
@ArthurTheRobloxGamer Jesus is king
@Bentley_beans no
4:30
[literally fracturing the skull]
"its not lethal" lmaooo
A chip out of the skull is not lethal, nor would be a 2-3cm puncture wound, to many parts of the body. There could always be a pierced artery and the like, but in most cases a person would survive being shot with those bolts.
@akiramenai4973The sheer power of the hit makes a concussion. Yea, not lethal.
2:06 bro buy a chronograph already 🙏
I actually I have a nice one, but I can’t find it anywhere at the moment. I still hope it’ll magically appear some day
Those are crazy expensive bro
No music no rush just pure feeling skipping not a sigle second man..hats off...
Big fan of yours brother
Love from Bangladesh😌 🇧🇩
This is definition of high effort content
This guy deserves some praise for the content
26:44 I put it at 0.25 speed at i still can't see it, the way you slowed it down is insane!
That is genuinely so scary too. Like at least a bullet makes enough of a mess that you'd realize it pretty quickly, but imagine you're just out with someone, you hear a loud smack, and your buddy just drops with no blood or anything. That would freak me out way more than if it made a mess
There is no frame for when it happened, so it doesn't matter how slow you put it
@Charley-ju6yg reminds me of the saying "it's all fun and games until the snow bank starts speaking Finnish"
@Charley-ju6yg I agree with that, me and my buddy out on a stroll and he drops? Like what the heck!
@Miikkeldk I actually went frame by frame too. Lol
What a man with free will does in his spare time
I never imagined i would see a magazine fed crossbow.....awesome!
The regular army in China used the repeating crossbows for 500 years, into 1900s, and in desperate cases even in WW2.
American education 😅
22:30 yeah, that bolt did break xD
I love Jörg's channel, he seems to be such a happy an joyfull man. Amazing to see how his stuff and weapons evolve from video to video
Awesome, as always, loved your post.
6:07 YESSS FINNALY A NON GUN-CENTERED CHANNEL THAT KNOWS HOW TO HANDLE WEAPONS
You mean keeping the finger off the trigger?
Wow if that’s the bar idk what to say
17:43 the bolt basically told the wood to get tf out of its way
277lbs is rather light for a medieval crossbow, a lot ranged in the 300s and the windlass ones went up into ridiculous drawweights like 900lbs.
typical hunting bow, even of the era. not all crossbows require a windlass.
@sinisterthoughts2896 sure. but he's shooting at a "zombie".
Just like soldiers didn't take their framing implements to battle (MOST of the time, anyway), there were purpose-built crossbows for shooting at people which were distinct from crossbows for hunting.
For the target demonstrated here, a war-weight crossbow would obviously be a better fit.
And the bolts were massive.
Great video mate 💯👍
5:25 missed opportunity to say "let me show you it's features"
And then the laugh “ahahahaa”
20:47 feels the power in his hands
21:44 more than twice!
I love supporting small creators
1:15 my back hurts just watching that
Fr bro.
14:15 oh boy can't wait for that expensive repair bill, or when the cable snaps and ruins your face
4:53 semi automatic is that the only thing required to fire a follow up shot is the trigger to reset. This is still single shot as you have to still manually have to load the next round.
Thank you i was about to say this as well, the difference between the old single shot crossbow and the upgrades, isn't that between a single-action and a semi-automatic, but that between a muzzle-loaded and a single action
I NEED more people to see this comment and realize what semiautomatic means
@forrest248 yeah… especially in the us the anti gun ppl should learn the difference between single shot, burst, semi automatic and fully automatic
Crossbows aren't dangerous , it's the person using it
25:55 Way To Go Robin Hood
6:26 “I’m currently mounting a red dot…a green one”
26:53 I thought it didn’t hit the target…wow just wow
Great video quality. Lots of good information.
I like this format. If you did this with a bunch of different weapons, I'd watch it.
18:02 Dayum! Thats a long range lobotomie. Frontal lobe *gone!*
Brilliant info and set-up. Well done!
19:58 woah bro, watch where you're pointing that thing!
5:13 this already existed for more than a thousand years, it's called the Zhuge Nu or Chukonu
he really just modernized it a little
Yep. China had some of the most terrifying crossbows in history.
Our boy Zhuge Liang really was ahead of his time.
I like the video and the format is fine. However I have an issue with you changing to a different bolt for the lethality tests. You should use the same type of tip each time even though the bolts themselves will be different due to which crossbow they go with. Broadhead crossbow bolts existed in the medieval period and were used for hunting so I feel like you did the medieval crossbow a disservice by not changing to a more lethal bolt for its lethality test. Also for the penetration test I'm confused why the wood block was held together by rubber bands for the first 3 but not the last 2. I'm not suggesting that having the rubber band would stop the bolts from the more powerful crossbows from splitting the wood but it would have affected the depth of the penetration at least a little bit.
I completely agree about having consistency with the bolts. If you're using broadheads, it's going to have a bigger impact and therefore, lethality.
Ultimately, the Medieval crossbow isn't going to be as "efficient" or "effective" as modern day crossbows, but even so, it would have been easy enough to use the same tips for each crossbow.
I still enjoyed the video, this isn't a big deal in the slightest though.
The point of a field trip is to test the accuracy and energy output of a bow without damaging an expensive broadhead. What he's doing is actually exactly like what hunters do to find out how powerful their bow is
@mortimerwright4826 I guess I could have phrased that better. I was specifically commenting on the lethality test not the accuracy test. I know why he didn't use a broadheads on the accuracy test. I was referring to how he used a different type of tip for each crossbow on the lethality test. He used a practice tip on the medieval, a hunting tip on the Interceptor, and for the Adder he used flesh slicer tips. I scrubbed through the video and I don't think he changed off the field tips for the last two crossbows.
@DamageNomad I mean broadheads are pretty expensive and I doubt he has a broadhead for the medieval crossbow bolt. I think the hunting tip and flesh slicing tip are functionally the same thing
Just bought my first crossbow. I’m loving it!
I have to say, the coil spring fired "crossbow" was much more impressive than i expected. Much quieter than expected.
Rookie mistake picking the most powerful for an apocalypse. You already know it’s hard af to find compatible bolts. You gotta go with the one with the most available ammo of course.
It's a crossbow not a gun. You can craft bolts yourself that would fit in it or don't you? Like yeah might not have the mean tips and it might take some fiddeling around until you can make effective ones bu5 at the end of a day its just bolts.
@ I’m neither a gun nor crossbow expert but his problem was quite literally finding bolts to continue the test. Also doubt the average viewers about to start crafting bolts like it’s Rust.
He picked the "semi-auto" ones. He added the Tenpoint as alternative for long range.
@cultofcedar in an apocalypse you'd be crafting or it's nothing lol. Got a lot of time then anyways and need to do so. It's just a stick with something sharp and fletching
Rookie mistake to think an apocalypse would happen anytime soon.
Love the scientific approach and editing, I don't see many people making the numbers this engaging!
I am fully convinced this man can do anything
the lancehead was definitely the coolest for me so compact yet so so so strong, very cool crossbow
The best Crossbow video ive ever seen is on a channel which isnt even a Crossbow/ Archery channel! This guy is good!
23:04 this moment brought a smile to my face, thank you for making my day better with this.
We hunt moose with crossbows, and there's a video of an adult male African elephant taken down with a single shot.
Next video idea: Learning how to do Kazotsky kick in 7 days (all 9 classes)
Finally, the wait is over. I love your content Mike. Keep it up for us
Your videos are amazing man!! Keep up!!!
Great video!
At 21:00 it looks like he was pondering shooting down the helicopter with the crossbow
Woah dude I actually watched Jorg's video many many years ago. Crazy how memory works
My 10 and 5 year old sons stumbled upon your videos on the TV one day and they absolutely love your channel! As a family we’ll sit and watch your videos all of the way through together up on the TV :) my favorite videos that they want to watch. I don’t think we’re your target audience, but thank you for putting out content that is informative, educational, and inspiring to young minds ❤
Be careful your son don’t shoot each other with the crossbow. It’s not a good thing for children to be looking at as a parent. That’s my advice to you.
This is the 1st comment of its type that I have seen on YT.
FYI sir, I was 13 years old when I built a large Roman style cross bow. I used a 10 speed bike gear system, a leaf spring from a car, steel cable and a 6"x6"x 6' beam I used 3/4" & 1" x 3'rebar rods for the bolts. I used 4"X4" beams for the frame. Took me months to build.
It worked very well, too well.
The 1st time I fired, we never found the bolt. The 2nd time I fired it, it went half way through a medium size tree.
It was very powerful. It was also very heavy. We put some wheels on it for moving it around. I was very proud of it. I showed it to my father, he was a university professor. He was amazed at it, he thought it looked very medieval. He wanted to shoot it. So we loaded it and he fired at a tree. He was very shocked by how powerful it was!
In fact, it kind of scared him. He made me take it apart. I was very disappointed.
For that much money, I might as well just pay the tax stamp and get a whisper pickle
20:34 thats what she said
How are you the only person to say that
9:48 you flashed your neighbors house
Yeah i was just about to say that aswell. At 9:47 - 9:48 there are 2 frames of the house.
Love the video, I’ve been meaning to make a medieval style crossbow for a while, maybe I’ll get around to it now!
It is amazing that these things do not need a licence
those three shots at the end - that is some unheard of level of accuracy GD!
0:48 While medieval crossbows does have a heavier draw weigh, but the draw length is significantly smaller. Penetrative power doesn't just start and end with draw weight
Yes the propulsion energy Is roughly max force x lenght/2 for pure elastic draw strength (force proportional to draw). For a constant force one energy=force x draw length (double!).;from this energy the wasted kinetic energy of the non-bolt moving mass at bolt detachment must be subtracted. What is left is the bolt energy, roughly proportional to damage I think
4:50 the definition of semi-automatic is self/automatic loading - the weapon recocks itself after firing but requires a new trigger. If you have to recock it yourself, it's called single-action.. the same as a medieval crossbow, just a lot faster.
More specifically it's a lever-action mechanism.
Better yet, they are repeaters.
Cut the man some slack dawg.
@Gogeta1-eu5vt cutting slack with a strung bow sounds like a great way to get string-burn.
Kidding aside, you can get crossbows with compressed-CO2 powered cocking mechanisms (or you can get such a mechanism standalone), and those would be much better candidates for calling "semi automatic" crossbows.
The whole concept of "Semi automatic" is that, once the weapon has been loaded, all the user has to do is pull the trigger for it to fire. No extra steps, every pull of the trigger results in another shot fired.
If the user has to cock the weapon between shots, but the act of cocking also loads the next shot to be fired, then that's a "repeating" weapon (and this term is used in antinquity as well, directly in the context of magazine-fed crossbows and arbalests).
This isn't mere pedantry: those of us pointing this out are not doing so to shame or rag on the creator, we are sharing information with the creator which will help him make his videos appear more polished. When someone uses a term line "semi-automatic" to refer to a very much manual process, it makes him look less knowledgeable, which may harm his viewer engagement. I think a channel making videos like this should succeed, therefore I want to see him using the correct terms because that will help with his viewer engagement.
Saving up for Ten point 500 fps!
Bro is the best person i have seen
