  • This weeks vlog we build raised beds in the polytunnel for next to nothing using saw mill top slab off cuts. I think they look great and we now have freed up space on our propagator table!
    Big thanks to ‪@Quickcrop‬ for the fleece, bottle top watering can ends and the bug hotel
    and thanks to ‪@polytunnels‬ for making such good polytunnels!

    We are- a family of four,
    Mum- Annie,
    Dad-Bruce
    Two children Elsie and Betsy
    One dog - Doug
    and we decided to trade our busy life as home and business owners to chase the dream we’ve harboured for 10years.
    How did we get here
    After years of saying one day, we finally realised that these opportunities don’t just land in your lap and if we seriously wanted to make a difference to the Earth then we were going to have to stop talking about it and do it!
    We sold all our stuff, got rid of the mortgage, sold our camper conversion business and landed in a dream come true. After traveling in our van we settled here in the west of Ireland. A place that has always been special to us. Annie is half Irish and since we met 12 years ago and she took me to meet her family i fell in love with Ireland too.
    Now we’ve made this dream a reality there is no stopping us! our plan is to work hard, meet new people and learn new skills that will guide us on our journey of permaculture and creating a way of life that sings to us. One where we aren’t bound to the banks, working every hour and outsourcing all of our needs. A simple way of life, with connection to ourselves, each other, the earth and our community.

    Wow great progress on the poly and the work shop you can see it all starting to come together. well done as a family everyone has got stuck in and done there bit, the girls helping out replanting the seedlings while you attend to the sheeting of the work shop. It will all pay off in the end as the hard work will get less and the benefits you get will be well worth the effort, Bruce you have a super Family there.

My brother helped me wheel barrow 3 tons of river sand in to my beds made the biggest difference in breaking up the clay. Might be good when you start outdoor beds. Thanks for sharing your journey. I would have done the polytunnel very similarly, I think many people can do it without spending too much. The only thing I can give you advice: I incorporated a superficial layer of earthworm humus in the seedbeds and crop beds. It has given me good results since doing organic farming! Thanks for sharing your channel.

    This might sound daft but bear with me - bubble wrap around the inside posts of your polytunnel will protect the plastic from contact with rough-hewn lumber, hopefully making it last longer in the Windy West.

    • @OffGridBruce
      @OffGridBruce  2 года назад +1

      That’s a good idea. Do you mean to protect from the timber on the beds? The plastic is very tight at the mo so it shouldn’t touch the beds but maybe in the years to come. The wood is from a sawmill in portumna he sells massive bails of top slabs

    • @886jules1
      @886jules1 2 года назад

      @@OffGridBruce Exactly. The wind can loosen the plastic over time just enough to snag any rough surface close by. It's no fun patching a tear with duct-tape, I know! Thanks for the lumber tip.

    hi bruce, great vid, can you please tell me how much it costs in land and council tax on your small holding, and would it be any less or more , if you had more or less land?,
    i might not be able to move in for 1-2 years ,so would i still need to pay this? even on a empty/ old cottage (with land) thats not being used,
    thank you

    • @OffGridBruce
      @OffGridBruce  2 года назад

      Land property tax is paid annually on your dwelling and as far as I know that’s it. The only time you pay more is at the time of purchase. Anything over 1 acre is charged at 7.5% valuation. There is no council tax as such. You have to organise your own waste etc

    • @lazycarper7925

    Hi Bruce, after watching this I guess you didn’t read my last comment from the previous video. I wrote about the no dig approach to vegetable growing which would have saved you a lot of time and effort in your polytunnel and you would have more space to grow. Check out Charles Dowding no dig. Love, peace and abundance 😉

    • @OffGridBruce
      @OffGridBruce  2 года назад +2

      Hey Brian thanks. We are doing no dig. There is card and mulch under those beds. The only thing we have dug so far is the well established brambles. It’s quite heavy clay underneath so thought it would be better to have slightly raised beds to stop roots getting to water logged. I haven’t filmed it but we have also made some no dig beds for our berry bushes :) I love Charles Dowding he’s great 😊
