I wish I had come across a video like this months ago! My chickens are just coming up on a year old and when I caught my rooster in the nesting box, late last summer when the pullets where just coming of laying age, I shooed him out because I was afraid he was going to try to roost in it! 🤦‍♀️Now I only have about 5 of 17 hens that will lay in the boxes. Time to revamp, and hopefully encourage my Roos interest. Thank you for the great tip!

Yes that's an honest mistake! It would be so easy to think things like he is trying to roost in there or trying to eat the eggs or simply going to kick all the bedding out or chase the hens off or something if you don't know about this part of the hubby wife chicken relationship.
I'm so glad you found this helpful! I hope your rooster gets interested back in the area you want him to bring the girls too! Maybe if you spiced the area up changing something he'll come recheck it back out

Hey there, have you thought about putting 1 bucket in the far corner your injured hen could use? Others may use it too but it's a thought. I also put golf balls in each box and it helped. It also discourages egg pecking. They peck the golf ball and it's hard. Our rooster does the same thing. Thanks for sharing this information.

Thank you for the ideas. There's roosts in the corner so it's a very messy area so not ideal. Trying to come up with a good flat area nest for her that won't be in a messy area.
That's great the golf balls are working well for you. We haven't tried them but have had a good experience with the ceramic eggs.
