Kurosawa created such an intimate movie with Dreams. I also think he’s a great director because if you don’t speak or understand Japanese, you can still watch his movies because they are very visual and emotional through that. This is my second viewing of his movies and still such an emotional connection to the material despite a huge cultural and language difference. Visuals truly is a language most everyone can speak.
Such a humble and open demeanor. He brought in his unofficial protégé. Also the fact that Lucas and Scorsese jumped at making this film no questions asked. Amazing.
'Dreams' by the great Director Revered Akira Kurosawa is a like a great paintings of human world on celluloid. A masterpiece. Salute to this great creator.
How incredibly interesting and inspiring it is to see two legendary writers and directors with Kurosawa sensei! It reminds us all that no matter where we're from or where we've been, we can all love one another and respect one another. ❤️ And Martin Scorsese as Vincent VanGough is meaningful on many different levels if you know much about the people they are. The artists they are. The artist Kurosawa San was and is and will always be. 🥲
After all these years, it registers on me that Scorsese is Van Gogh-- As Homer Simpson would say--- "Doh!!" Above all, deep thanks for this excellent insight into the creation of one of my favorite films.
It wasn´t an american movie with american stars. Only very, very few foreign movies get oscars. Today the oscars is a big joke. Many bad actors get one, but many greats never even get nominated. In Cannes they are at least serious about moviemaking and giving awards to the right people.
If Kurosawa could now see the films of his American admirers...he would definitely have very good things to say about Marti Scorsese. For Lucas...Kurosawa could probably agree that Lucas did try to learn from him about the visual element
kurosawa era un genio. Es de los pocos directores cuyas peliculas se mantienen bien aún a pesar del tiempo que ha pasado desde su estereno. trono de sangre yojimbo ran dreams rashomon son pelìculas brillantes y entretenidas.
@@YK_Paul-J lol, what's sad exactly. You're aware that he worked with Kurosawa in the 80's, producing some of his films? He was co-producer on many other great films as well, like "Mishima" and "Tucker".

@@taito_0o yep he's the unofficial protégé as some would say
Kurosawa is the best director ever. There will be no one great as he was.
I have watched almost every film he's ever made, he's amazing.
Muy inspirador y con gran fuerza dramática. Hay mucha sensibilidad en esta película.
Terrible anime director.
@@oneiroagent Also, a liar. His 1985 film Ran isn't even about running!
Sadly the younger generation think Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift is peak Japanese filmmaking

This must've been Scorsese's dream come true. Acting in a Kurosawa movie.
George looks so happy with Akira

Ishiro Honda, Kurosawa's best friend and a fine director himself.
Absolutely! I just finished watching all his Science Fiction films

How something like this doesn't get the Oscar
I think Kurosawa realized at this point in his career that the joy of creating art was worth far more than awards.
oscars are Hoolywood and like 9% rest of the world. Same with all the big events for enterteinment or arts there.

Akira Kurosawa got three Oscar.
@NikOrangutan Kurasawa won two best foreign picture awards in Oscar , for Rashomon and Delsu Uzara
Master Scorsese meets Master Kurosawa
Always the lame attempt to try to copy the Master

It's marvellous to see an auteur doing his work.
I saw this when it came out! I don't think it is appreciated how much of a collaboration this was between Kurosawa & Lucas. A very special film.

I didn't realise they used a blue screen for so much of this. "Crows" is my favorite dream in the movie.
What a privilege to have been there!!
Interesting doc. Would like to see the whole thing
Brilliant Martin Scorsese as Vincent van Gogh💕
Definitely gonna be getting the criterion after seeing this.

How the hell did Kurosawa come up with the idea of Martin Scorsese playing Vincent van Gogh?
"GREAT! GREAT!" *george lucas voice*
