You can take your Direhowl and breed it back to a Malpaka once you open up the breeding pen at 19 to pick up a Fenglope; keeping any good passives you found on your dire. The harness unlocks at 24 and it is more than sufficient as a ground mount until lategame. It has a standard speed of 750 (pyrin is 850) and a dash at over 1k, and the double jump is high enough to traverse most obstacles even small cliffs further increasing its usefulness. It is the fastest option till the mid 30s so its worth building for at midgame. Edit: likewise you can breed your direhowl to an Incineram to get a Kitsun with swift really early and start building towards your shadowbeak. There is also a process for a early astegon but its a lot more involved and may not be worth it. I did: Dire + Nightwing = Rayhound + Mozzarina = Grizzbolt + Relaxaurus = Orserk + Grizzbolt = Astegon. Ragnahawk has been the mainstay flying mount of our guild ever since I managed to breed a pair with consistent full speed passive offspring, and we've not moved onto Felaris despite the higher top speed, all due to that delicious bonus player damage while riding in the ragnahawks saddle, even at 0 starrs, that 50% player damage +fire burst is far too strong to pass up.

fenglope sprint speed might be lower but firstly the dash uses half the stamina so its decent, especially when travelling in this game is not just a long marathon at ground, unlike flying. moving at ground is mostly medium distance with not much (dash) and u stop every now and then to pick up an egg, chest, effigy etc so it makes the cadence of fenglope way better. The bigger reason though is the fact that fenglope has a huge double jump that pairs with the dash makes ground exploration waay faster. if you ask anyone if they only can have 1 pal and its for ground traversal most would get fenglope, solely because you barely have any places where u just keep sprinting and do nothing for 20s on the ground with all the verticality, which fenglope bypasses. Heck it can even scale mountains well if you hate slow flying mid game. tldr 250 more sprint speed is not as good as dash+double jump especially as a ground mount@@SuperCatacata

Pyrin is 850 so its technically faster, but since it requires mid 30s (when you can just get a ragnahawk) and doesn't have the double jump its likely going to be slower at traversing the map than a Fen.
