- Documentary covering what came to be known as "The Boston Gold Rush" of the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Boston stand-up comedians like Dennis Leary, Steven Wright and Colin Quinn burst upon the national scene, giving audiences a taste of the hard-edged social and political commentary that came out of that city.

Who else is here from listening to Uncle Joey ?
@@kevinotrev Like a DOCTA.. TREMENDOUS !!!

Hahaha just heard the fitzsimmons episode this morning and I'm here
Tremendous!
I'm here from watching documentaries on when Ciros on Sunset Blvd was turned into The Comedy Store, owned by Mitzy Shore..and all the old and great talent that moved to LA from the east coast..big ups to this shit, all day!..
Seeing this finally means so much to me- I study and adore comedy as a freaking hobby.
I bought this on dvd years ago. Lent it to a friend and never saw it again. Glad its here on the youtubes.
Some “friend”
Lenny's show on TV38 was ahead of it's time. Thank you for putting this out. Fucking legends
Negro Weather. LOL!
Denis Leary was just on Toucher and Rich and they mentioned this. I saw it like 20 years ago when it came out. My favorite part is Steven Wright admitting he is in a state of shock when he was invited to sit next to Johnny Carson. No P.R. team, no manager or agent, just real emotions. Good stuff.
Kindly show your appreciation by clicking that Like button. Cheers!
Big Smile This is great! Thank you!
Big Smile appreciation shown...thank you 😂😂😂
I just clicked on it
Great upload. R.I.P Barry Crimmins
These were the days when I was trying to break into Boston comedy! I knew Janeane Garofalo, Louis C.K., and Laura Kightlinger, and met a lot of the others. Tony V. was very supportive, as was Ron Lynch.
Wendy Liebman was another one I knew.
Steve Burstein do you still do comedy?
I was in an improv group last year named "New Tricks", but it broke up. A Meetup group I'm in might lead to some performing. I don't do Stand-Up anymore because I need people up there to react to, and I really never was a stand-up comic by nature.
Ive always wanted to open a comedy club in my small twn. . Let the comedians kinda run it 0
way to come on here just to name drop... real cool guy
Here because of Rogan...this is phenomenal...Shane- you better watch this!
i've never seen this before, 508/603 here, boston/mass just has it
Thank you so much for the upload!
Lenny describing that 9 show night got my blood pumping.
I have been a fan of comedians since I was 10, didn't even listen to music driving but comedians in the late 80s-90's....cannot be many acts I never hear that hit a cassette tape, hbo special, great interesting Doc! Well done.
I lived at the corner of Allston Ave and Comm Ave from 84-88 (right above Uno's) and remember walking just down the street to Play it Again Sam's - classic times
The best documentary I've seen on this subject, and I've seen many.
Please do share some titles! 🙂
Thanks for the upload was looking for this everywhere
Joe Rogan and Dave Chappelle sent me here....
Lenny's softball league played after mine on Ebersol field. Lenny would often show up early and sit on our bench. We loved him.
Oh yeah, those years of stand-up *WAS* great, I was there, and lucky to have experienced all of it!
Enjoyed this.Thank u
Brought here by listening to Nick Dapaolo on the Fitzdog podcast...THANK YOU!
Amazing documentary on Boston comedy!
Found out about this from a Dennis Leary interview. Great documentary.
which interview?
"Putting a jet engine in someone's living room for no reason and expecting a standing ovation." 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great Doc, Fran! Love all these comics, so good back in the day. Glad they all got to do what they loved and you let us watch it unfold. And Steven, stop flipp'n the fuck'n switch ;)))
That was the time I lived in Boston '78-'85...we loved the Ding Ho...Lenny..Steve and friends were the greatest...I was blessed..the Golden years fir sure🤩👏
As a side note ..this was the time period of amazing Happy Hours on the Cape ..John Morgan..DJ Sullivan..Improper Bostonian..another great documentary ..again I was born at the right time..was the BEST TIME EVER to be around Boston/Cape...and we didn't have a lot of $..out of college..we knew how to enjoy life!!
Kings of Cape Cod..watch it😉👍
Wow look at that young Colin Quinn!!!

"Theyre with me right now." SW 😅
Love the story about how Steven wright wasn’t out badgering the tonight show booker at his car and ofc he’s the one that gets it. Good lesson
That Boston Police Officer at 57:28 was future Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans!
Good stuff.
Make Comedy Great Again!
Love it
Joe Rogan is always bringing this documentary up. Glad to finally see it.
Also here from JRE. He was just talking about it with Steven Wright.
@@doodahman2995 i about crapped my pants when I saw Steven Wright on JRE. So happy.
Thats why I'm here.
I feel like I’m in Boston right before the comedy boom. I live in kind of a rural part of Indiana so there’s not a lot of open mics near me, but there is a few. Beginning of December I went and tried an open mic for the first time. It went better than expected, but still I got a lot of work to do. But I don’t care if I’m ever going to be a “real comedian” or not. I’m just doing it for the fun of it
I’m a Boston comic rn an this is wild. Never knew any of this info
Lenny wasnt the only comic to push the audience away & then bring them back..Patrice was GREAT @ that also.....P.O. Was great peroid!😂😂😂
Jazz and Stand-up, the two original American art forms.

Whaa?? What episode? Lol
@@TerenceClay32805 Joe rogan?
Greg Fitzsimmons and Joe Rogan brought me here.
I found out about this watching Joe Rogan w/ Dave Chappell. 🙂
Why did Johnny Carson think that not many comedians came from Boston. There’s nearly as many as Manchester, England!
Really enjoyed this movie. Can anybody tell me the song at 35:00 ?
I guess Patrice O'Neal, Bill Burr, Joe Rogan, etc. were the next generation of Boston comics.
Fraaaaan Solomiiiitaaaaaa!!!
"and now: the black weather."
I want to see that!
the gate way,about tyme...lol
Joe Rogan and Don Gavin sent me here.
95percent of stand-ups suck. It's just very very hard to do well. Truth.
Jack Gallagher grew up right up the street from me in West Bridgewater, MA
2003? 200 fucking 3?! I know alot of these interviews were done a few years prior, but holy biscuits...
12:45 is that you Norton??
It’s so odd seeing Lenny Clarke. I’m used to seeing him on Rescue Me and Tough Crowd. I’m hearing his voice but the face isn’t quite right
The creators of crime in sports brought me here
15:40 Yelling in a bar
26:21, 40:17, 1:01:41 to 1:03:05 Jeaneane Garafola
44:33 Guitar
51:55 Bobcat
53:59 Comic gets cheated
That sweet spot between Christian-right conservatism of the 50s-60s and left-wing PC culture since the 90s.
Here from the new Joe Rogan Chapelle podcast
I know this is based on super early Comedy, but I’m surprised they didn’t talk about bill burr even towards the end at least
lol this was made in 2006. bill burr wasn’t big at all in 2006.
I saw Bill Burr at Zanie’s in Chicago in 2006. I knew as the white guy from The Chappelle Show racial draft sketch.
Working class Irish in Boston? This is old - 95% of the Irish I grew up with moved out decades ago.
👍 🤙
"I had a loan"
Tim Dillon reminds me of lenny..Lenny paved the road-
8:32 wait what? He can speak properly?!
Colin Quinn was not from Boston!
He was booed out of the city.
Lol did you not watch what happened? They literally explained the entire situation
Wow. Back when people were funny.
Jealousy is a bitch, I'm not.

FYI if you're born in the USA ....YOURE AN AMERICAN !!!
Quit grasping at straws to be different, take pride in your own country
Dennis Leary isn't funny. (someone had to say it)
Jeremiah Warren Neither is Colon Quinn
D Bag I can die, but Quinn is still an awful comic. Sorry. I might be wrong, though, seeins how he's all over TV, the movies, tours, etc. How does he have time to take a crap? lol.
"seeins" as commercial success is the direct equivalency of comedic talent then i definitely agree with this statement. I also think two & a half men is the pinnacle of all sitcoms.
Completely unrelated to Boston I know, but how Dan Akroyd and Kevin Nealon *ever* made it in comedy is a *complete* mystery.
schtuke akroyd and nealon are amazing comedians.
My wife (M) might like 2 1/2 Men. I do not. Regardless, seeins how you are so sensitive about unfunny Colin, D Bag is (definately) a D Bag, but might be either Colin or D Dennis Leary. The truth might hurt, but its true. Dennis? Great in Rescue Me btw.
When white stand up stood out.
True, but the best stand up to ever come out of Boston is Patrice O'Neal.
Patrice oneal was awesome but certainly not the best comic to come out of Boston. Plus he's not in the doc because this about comics in the 80's.
Doug Stanhope>Patrice O'neal
There you go shitting on people with PC Bullshit, Welcome to whiny brathood in your coming of age party. But I don't do diapers.
Bradley Galli hands down
How's come Joe Rogan is never in any of these great comedy docs like E's doc on the store or many other great comedy docs, even the newer 1's?? Uhmmm... Maybe he isn't as great as he thinks he is?? Maybe he just got lucky & caught some breaks w News Radio & that baseball show & Fear Factor & hanging out at early UFC events, got lucky & met Dana?? His cards cld have so easily went thee other way & cld still be open mic'in if it wasn't 4 a few lucky breaks. No1 gets 2 where they get to without some lucky breaks. Idc who they are or how hard they or how good they are at anything. Fate & Luck & Life have just as much 2 do with everything & every1 as hard work or anything else. 1 zig instead of zag & that's it? Lives are so mysterious & different & unpredictable. I believe no1 is in total control of their life. No matter what successful happy think. They just got lucky & got dealt Aces no matter how hard they worked...
Do another rail...
you are delusional. clearly you don’t know anything about the last 25 years of stand up comedy.
Paula Poundstone is not funny.
Especially now.
