    I can’t describe the feeling I get listening to this piece...Puccini put this together in one night after someone died and to see something so utterly outstanding and bone chillingly beautiful shows anything is possible.

    As a 10 years old kid, I used to listen to this masterpiece every night back in the 50's, as it was the theme song of a dadio program in Havana's CMBF radio station. The most sublime music I have rvrt headr, together with The Humming Chorus... The genius od Puccini at his best...

    This is the most beautiful and sublime character piece written for string quartet in existence. Puccini manages to convey all his pain and grief into musical perfection. The B section has one of the most sensible melodies ever imagined.

    The Duke of Savoy was king of Spain for a brief 3 years. He abdicated citing the Spanish people to be ungovernable. He returned to Italy and died in 1890, I found this piece because I live in Amadeo, Philippines, a municipality named in his honor. Life can suck for kings too.

    En enero de 1890 murió el segundo hijo del rey Víctor Manuel II, Amadeo de Saboya, duque de Aosta y fugaz rey de España. Sorprendido y alterado por el luctuoso acontecimiento, Puccini compuso, en una sola noche, un sencillo cuarteto de cuerdas al que llamó Crisantemi, plantas asociadas a los ritos funerarios.

    I heard this piece for the first time in my 86 years of life this year at the Quartetto Indaco concert at the Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo. It was performed as an encore. It was a small piece, only five or six minutes long, but listening to it for one or two minutes I couldn't help to be moved to tears. Whose and what work is it? A few days later, I emailed the Institute. They responded immediately and told me it was Giacomo Puccini's Crisantemi. Thanks to that, I was able to listen to the piece again on RUclips. A lot of thanks! This quartet was written by Puccini in one night in memory of his patron's sudden death. Listening to this piece, my two friends who died in quick succession this summer come to mind.

      It's a matter of taste I know, but in the case of this piece of music I believe the original quartet version works best - the intimacy of Puccini's original is not improved by adding numbers and basses - to my ear the string orchestral version seems overblown - or perhaps I should say over-bowed.

    • @isabelg.2450
      @isabelg.2450 7 лет назад

      Robert Davidson I agree. But I'm playing it with an orchestra as a bassist so I'll just have to live with that ha ha

      Perhaps you do, and I'm sure it's still great to play, and I hope any performance(s) go really well for you; but maybe - if your orchestra is good enough (that's not intended to be snide; I believe it's a v. difficult piece to play) - you could suggest tackling Schonberg's "Verklarte Nacht" (apologies for missing umlauts) - that's a piece which imho really transfers well from chamber forces to string orchestra - and is similarly beautiful, though more dramatic, which I believe lends itself better to the larger forces.
