Yet again, Debbie keeps her cool, dignified manner through the whole interview. Such class. She deserves a medal for keeping calm when these interviewers seem to want to belittle her. So much admiration for her!
This is exactly why I love her! She sat there and answered his stupid questions so politely. I cant think of any other rock star from the 70's\80's that would have tolerated that so nicely! She is wearing the same dress and hat 30 years later on rockin new years eve 2014
Yes. Deborah Harry has such gracious manners, always. Unlike Madonna who gives pricky interviewers a run for their money by actually being a bigger prick.
Debbie is so chic ! The outfit is what is in now, I wonder which one of her artist friends made this for her .The 70's and 80s in NYC 🗽 WAS A BLAST !!!DEBBIE YOU ARE A SO BEAUTIFUL AND articulate.I still have a crush on you♥️
He wasn't attacking her or the movie, it's just his style that he has used successfully with male artists too...Better than these fawning baffoons who just want to talk about banal subjects as his qs were pertinent and she also had a lot of fun on the show too.
Russell died 5 years after this interview. Videodrome is a sickly cool movie and was way a head of it's time. For some people to get what it was about was incomprehensible. In the movie she was virtual which was unheard of in the concept of a character back then.
The movie he is ridiculing in his failed attempt to diminish her is now considered one of the great cult films of all time.....the Director she praises, that he has never heard of, later became one of the leading Directors in Hollywood.....and the important and futuristic subject matter of the movie that she refers to is basically what became the World Wide Web two decades after this interview took place.....quite aside from her stunning beauty and her amazing music it's always struck me that Debbie Harry chooses to work with artists rather than well known celebrities, often collaborating with unknown musicians and up and coming directors instead of using established talent that can enhance her career in the way Madonna always did....she's always been very much ahead of the game, creating something new rather than just reacting to what's already there....the early days of the CBGBs Punk Scene, the first Rap Record to reach a white audience, the work with alternative artists like Andy Warhol and H.R.Giger....the work with new directors like David Cronenberg and Jonas Akerlund, her collaborations with then unknown singers like Shirley Manson and The Dum Dum Girls.....her decision, almost unheard of in show business, to stop working for 3 years to nurse her critically ill boyfriend back to health, the way she changed the rules for women in music in the 1970s and the way she now defies the stigma attached to older artists in music in 2016.....she is as cool as fuck and the real deal....total legend
You're right. She's very intelligent & humble. She would have to be to be able to be so gracious to people who dismiss her as being an airhead. Chris Stein is quite articulate and intelligent himself. Saw the interview of them discussing rap and the popularity of it. It's too bad artists, musicians carry the stigma of being dumb and silly when they are often far from it. Some come across as a tad bit "odd" (and some are high as a kite I'll give you that) but that doesn't mean they're stupid.
"Debbie Harry chooses to work with artists rather than well known celebrities, often collaborating with unknown musicians and up and coming directors instead of using established talent that can enhance her career in the way Madonna always did....she's always been very much ahead of the game" And therein lies the difference. I saw Blondie last week in London Still brilliant And what a refreshing change to see an artist not giving a damn about public opinion and doing what she wanted to do Bravo
Videodrome really predicted things like RUclips and Instagram where people experience others lives vicariously over the internet. Take out the horror aspect and you can see it. Even the bit with Bianca Oblivion and television for the homeless. That's internet in libraries.
She got the part in the original Blade Runner as the character Pris and turned it down because her manager told her she had to go on tour and it would be to much.

I´m on a Debbie Harry binge at the moment and one of the things that strikes me is that she can deal with any kind of irritating interviewer with grace.
Agree with you about Harty. What a patronising a*hole he was to all his guests. Terrible at his job, always seemingly trying to demean and belittle his guests, most of whom were too smart for him. Debbie Harry looked very uncomfortable in his presence.

+kyle smallwood Grace Jones was drugged up to her eyeballs on the show. Bowie was a very complicated person and was considered a nightmare to most interviewers in the 70s/80s. Debbie has asked Russell to hype the movie up it's good publicity. It got banned not long after in the UK then 6 months later the queues where around the corner for a while. Now it's a cult classic.
Grace Jones was a nightmare but David Bowie was not, IMO. I thought he was very hard and incredibly rude with Bowie unprovoked from the start. Bowie was having none of it and that's when things got really heated but the interviewer started it by being such an ass to him first.
Russell Harty should never have been a talk show host, he asked so many stupid questions and never showed his guests any respect. I remember when he was interviewing Grace Jones, she physically attacked Harty over his ridiculous questions and manner. Russell Harty was the late Richard Whiteley's teacher at Giggleswick School in the Yorkshire Dales. Richard was the host of the Channel 4 words and numbers quiz show "Countdown" from 1982 until his death in 2005.
I cannot believe Videodrome received such ridiculous comments - first I have ever heard. Poor Deborah, no wonder she is so Anti Establishment. Thank heavens we have moved on from this era. . I just have to edit this to say: Why did Russell Harty invite her on the show just to slag off her work!
Deborah Harry continues to be so bloody refreshing. Are there any female pop singers today who would have the slightest idea as to who Marshall McLuhan was? Otherwise, Russ Hardy is a passive-aggressive twat. (We already knew that). Debbie's classy poise carries on to 2024 . CHEERS
Her lips, natural I assume, are so ridiculous (in a fabulous way), as if they have been drawn into her face by a designer of "the perfect mouth" and no one has achieved the same look either before or since. Simply astounding.
The worst interviewer ever heard. Even worse than another one where all the interviewer asked over and over is who she had and would still like to sleep with. That was bad but this was even worse. How do these interviewers keep from getting fired or hired at all? Beyond me. I believe she has had the worst interviewers I have ever heard. She is so classy and smart, and handles them with grace and ease. Inspiring. I'll try to channel her grace the next time I encounter a rude person. PS) How inappropriate for him- a large man- to arm wrestle her- a small, petite woman. She even handled that as good as any woman could.
How bizarre that Videodrome was considered so taboo and so extreme . The same thing with Debbies first solo album KooKoo, because she had acupuncture needles in her head.
I'm with Clive Nicholas on this: Never a great fan of Russel Harty at all, crap interviewer & a token gay for the system..... Yes, she should have called him a complete knob but maybe that was the reaction he was trying to provoke.......just 'up' his sad ratings I'd say.... "Oh! He upset Debbie Harry...he must be a really 'probing' type interviewer.." Yeah right. Sorry. He was pretty crap. I don't normally speak ill of anyone, dead or alive, but the bloke was rubbish, let's be honest.
I watched this when it was broadcast and was really annoyed at how Russell Harty introduced Debbie.. 'She used to look like this'..sarcy twit..never understood why he was popular..much preferred T Wogan...
