Quick tip for next time you're planting carrots. Try mixing radish seeds with the carrot seeds when direct sowing. The radishes grow pretty quick, take up space instead of weeds, and ripen before the carrots. When you harvest the radish, you have pre-thinned the carrots.
@@ddubsr5886 radishes are ready to harvest 21 days from the day of planting. Carrots take on average 80 days. Some are longer a few are shorter. The carrot flies don't show up until the carrot tops are fairly sizable which is long after the radishes are harvested. So there are no radishes left when the carrot flies would begin to be problematic
I love to interplant various things, including root vegetables. I have done beets in with carrot seeds and harvest the beets when they are tiny babies. I've used radishes as well. Both work great. Unfortunately it still doesn't remove the need for thinning out carrots. Even if you plant other crops, you're still going to end up with too many carrot seeds. It just seems to be the law in the garden lmao. The one thing that has made carrot planting more or less flawless is sowing the seeds in boiled and cooled cornstarch gel. It completely eliminates scattering too many carrot seeds and ensures that they are evenly distributed in rows at the volume desired and properly spaced. When I learned of the method, I was kicking myself for all the years I didn't know about it.
I was sick all last week and binged through your Homesteading videos. It's amazing to watch the little changes and improvements (and big ones!) over time to create your little paradise. I can't wait to do the same one day.
The cool thing about Carrots, is that if you plant them too close they will grow fine. They will wrap around each other making a cool double spiral mega carrot.
Everything looks awesome Kevin! Would love to see an update on how the rain water harvesting system is working. Also would love to see an update on the blueberry and raspberry plants you started last year. Keep on growing!
You mentioned about pulling out the Rue because you don't use it much. Have you tried putting a little fresh Rue in your coffee ☕? That's a common practice in Ethiopia, the home of coffee.
You have accomplished a lot in a years time. I remember when you moved in and all the changes that you have made inside and out of the homestead. Love the idea of the forever epic tags, a little larger, and maybe have some labeled for those continuously used like herbs, carrots, beets etc..😊
Forever plant tags, until you lose it! Always my problem…. End of season found it in the compose bin with the pruners, my son hot wheels, wife kitchen scissors etc lol
I love this channel even more than I love your other channel. They’re both amazing, don’t get me wrong, but seeing you and Jacques just having bro time in the garden makes my heart happy lmaooo
I totally dig the entire epic network ! I love how you guys get along, it adds a lot of dimension to the episodes. Keep up the great work you guys. Thanks for teaching me about espoma products. I'm addicted! Blood meal, garden tone, bio tone plus, tomato tone, bone meal and berry tone round out my collection. I also got a bag of azomite waitin in the wings as well. My garden is going to be EPIC!!
I love carrots and really enjoyed last season. I grew rainbow heirloom carrots, chopped them up and roasted them with a chicken and it was one of best meals I’ve had in some time. The homestead looks incredible, looking forward to the annual homestead update.
In my experience, I have many of the plastic plant tags that are that same shape and size and I lose them in the garden. They're too small, and when the garden really gets going, they get lost in the foliage.
Great job kev! Congrats on all the success. I remember i sent you some MORINGA seeds back in 2017 or 2018. Consistency is key to success. Keep it up brother
I’m growing garlic for the first time this year! I’m in zone 9b/10a. Planning to plant them this week as well as carrots. I’m late getting tatted aren’t I?!
I planted garlic for the first time last year and I pealed all the skins off, luckily none of them rotted, they were a raging success actually! 😁 But now I know I don't have to do all that extra work of pealing this year's planting will go so much easier
The tags are nice, but I really like the chalkboard looking ones you used for garlic a while back. Also, silly question, does the writing fade off the tags after watering or rain?
I’m growing garlic for the first time and I am so excited about it! I have Basque, Italian late and susanville, and threw in a couple of shallots too. Thanks again for the inspiration and information!
I'm on my second season for garlic! I grew only hard neck last year and am doing a mix of soft and hard this year. I have manyyy onion plants coming soon too...what did I do! haha Good luck!!
Kevin, do you know if there's a way to attach hardware cloth to the bottom of the Birdie's beds? I have a whole hillside of gophers that get into every piece of dirt, and I don't like to use a horse trough with a bottom because then worms can't work up from the soil. Just looking for solutions in gopherville.
That’s a great idea. I expect you could cut it larger than the bottom of the bed and then insert it so that the hardware cloth folds up the sides several inches in the inside? Once the bottom layer of soil is packed full to the edge and has the weight of all the other soil on top, i bet a critter wouldn’t wedge their way between the hardware cloth and the bed wall.
@@twobluestripes And I was thinking it wouldn't be flexible enough to really smooth against an inside edge to prevent intrusion since the beasts seem to fit through small spaces. I've thought about wrapping it up the sides, but don't want to get snagged on it.
@@tinad8561 Possibly flat sheets laid out way beyond the bed would work. I'll have to try this with a smaller bed to see if they come in through the mulch cover and find a way between the fabric and the bed frame.
Kevin, your garden space looks GREAT. I was totally distracted by the white fence. Is that an extension on top to make it taller? Sorry for the non gardening question :)
Instead of hacky sack, my friends and I in college always played HORSE (like the basketball game) except with flipping and catching stuff. We'd do doubles, triples, backwards flips, under the legs, eyes closed, etc. Some good nostalgia you just dug up ;)

It also confuses carrot flys, a common pest for carrots

that big concrete/besser block wall at the back you should trellis and grow grapes on. that would be pretty.

The epic garden is starting to look awesome. Nice good Kevin.

I like the forever plant tags but i would want them larger.
Valid!
Yes - longer
You two are so fun to watch! 🙂 The epic gardens are looking fantastic! 👍
OMG! I aspire to have my students and I create our garden to be as beautiful and welcoming as the one you're creating. Keep up the good work.
Incredible progress and productivity! I’m always surprised at how big the property actually is, you have a fantastic spot there 🌱🌱🌱

I love Jacques hand tally technique!

I can’t find the Epic Forever Plant Tags! I think that’s a great idea and would’ve loved to try them in my garden and raised beds!
loving the addition of the comedy to the videos!

Hi! I'm in zone 8b Vancouver WA. Are the carrots and radishes okay if they catch a little bit of Frost and a decent amount of rain?
How do you preserve that much food after you've picked it? I feel like all of those carrots would go bad so quickly before you could eat them all.
Would love the custom made beds but I live in Australia!!
How do you allow for the wash out of the beds i.e. no borders to stop soil running away and/or into the walkways?
