7:55 "The boy from Bolton cries". This 50 year old had tears welling up almost two years later, just watching that. Though I don't think our funding of the Olympics has been used right by politicians, the Super Saturday athletics & much of the velodrome briefly seemed to make it worthwhile.
I was always looking forward to Kenny v Bauge, especially after the world championships. This was excellent to watch, could not stop screaming at the tv!
The tactics are all to do with wind resistance. If they ride fast from the start, the second rider will get a much easier ride and be able to sprint past at the end. They ride slowly because they are trying to force the other to lead. The rider at the front will be looking back to watch for a surprise move.
Rounder than the rest, eh? I loved that one, mostly because some sniffy better-than-thou cycling idiots on the continent bought it good and proper. Thanks for the memory.
For some ooh so strange reason I'm drawn back here again on this, the night of the Paris opening event (which is thus far as dull as dishwater, I've spent the day looking forward to it but if I wanted to go down to a waterway to see people waving, over and over again, at those on the bank, I'd go to my local canal, to see the narrow boats) but, upon rewatching this, It's almost as if Jason's legs are moving at twice the speed of Victor's, yet such narrow margins.
The reason they start so slow is because if you start racing fast and the other person is in your slipstream they will use 80% less energy and overtake easily later on
only IF the rider behind reacts quick enough to a quick start. Kenny did this to Bauge some years ago and caught him out, it was only because Kenny moved out from his line right on the last bend did Bauge get the win. it's a useful tactic if you're wanting to keep the bigger, more powerful sprinters honest and your opponent guessing.
Best of three races, taking it in turns to lead off first. The two cyclists jockey for best ‘race’ position for two laps, then when the bell goes they have one final lap to race to the finish. It’s usually easier to come from behind as you can slipstream then ‘out-jump’ your opponent (as Kenny did in race one). That’s why they start really slowly to try and force their opponent to the front.
+Bezourx You have to complete 3 laps..... And it's not about time... Therefore it's like playing cat n mouse (mind game etc) who s Gona start racing first!!!!!! They don't actually wind it up until the last of 3 laps... Because your legs would not take it
Kenny has tried a flying three laps before and did win the heat - but then was relegated for slipping out of the sprint lane. It's hard work and you can only succeed if you lead off and catch your opponent completely cold. Kenny's ability to ride two laps without look ahead once - amazing!
+Zaed Harhara Have u been racing in a sprint on track? if u start off all your energy, u prob can't finish with your full speed, then u get tired after halfway. so u start off slow then builds up and find the perfect opportunity to over take and explode your full power thats why lol
+Rolan Reynacido, because the speed in cycling is much higher than in running the rider sitting behind saves a lot of energy because the rider in front of him is breaking the air. If they just went out full hammer from the start the rider behind will have a huge advantage. Because of this it becomes a tactical race. In running every runner has his one lane so nobody can have an advantage of drafting. In longer runs it also starts to become a bit tactical but nit as much as in cycling.very different from running. The rider behind saves roughly 30-35 % energy. This means that if the rider in front is cycling with 1000 watts which is possible over a shorter distance the rider behind only has to use 650-700 watts to keep up. As soon as he gets out of the slipstream he will also have to pedal with 1000 watts to maintain some speed.
I wish these hard working dedicated athletes could sue morons like you. Lose everything you own, then you would think twice before posting this type of comment.
I went to the same school as Jason & was friends with his brother Craig. That’s the closes i’ve come to winning Olympic Gold.
I think you can claim that as another gold for Team GB.
Closer than me mate.
Kenny's win over Bauge, was my personal highlight of the whole games.

Ive always wondered the tactics of this race
I think I heard Chris Hoy say recently that you use approximately 30% more energy if on the front.
These two are the best sprint riders in the world.
Sir Chris might have disagreed at the time!
ive watched this so many countless times and its as tense every single time.
And, more important, he won Laura's heart
Great Kenny and our magic round wheels!
Rounder than the rest, eh? I loved that one, mostly because some sniffy better-than-thou cycling idiots on the continent bought it good and proper. Thanks for the memory.
What a games great memories.
Speed is the key!
Kenny you beast!
Look at the form. look at the legs
I remember watching this. It was amazing.
I think he was giving his all, just that because Kenny was on his shoulder round that last bend he had more speed coming in to the straight.

Kenny’s having to work harder as he’s being slipstreamed, but the way he defended himself is just phenomenal

No where near 80% less energy 😂
80% ?? Wow is that true?
@@justw4lkbesideme More like 30 % which is still enough though.
Its like 30%, but if we talking about olimpic, that is much...
You will have 80% chances to lose if you sprint from the begining
Would have loved to see hoy v kenny, but this was good too.
very good race
That's cute of them to cuddle like that in the beginning.
haha i thought so, too
Wut
Unbelievable how fast they go
Haven’t a clue what is going on, I swear team pursuit makes more sense

it,s fun to go fast when u cycling...i like it.
Kenny was never going to be beaten.
Rooting for Baugé in 2016
70kph in the saddle!!!!!!
1:05 my mans actually frozone
Tur 1992
Great stuff! chess on wheels with split second timing!,
Won Gold(s) in some form at the last 3 Olympics!.
lot of willpower there.....not many of us have...
Why is the sound for the Olympic broadcaster's commentators always so bad?
Why did no one tell the commentator that his mike wasn't loud enough? I struggled to hear what he was saying.
that's great
hope jason soon will ride for sky on the road.
gladiators
Can’t hear the commentary. What happened to the British commentators.
This is Aussie coverage, not British.
Is it me or did Bauge give up too early in the first sprint? It looked as though he might have one if he had kept pushing to the line...
What's the purpose of going on top of the track?
When you come down you go fast from going down the slope and also it longer there when going slow takes more time
Store gravitational potential energy by being high on the track, then turn that energy into speed as you dart down to the bottom.
Gravity drop
Who’s here for home work
Is Britain!!!
I don't get it
I'm British and I don't get it either

ok good to know

Chris Painter
I saw that a while back and it was against the same guy.
I think its a once in a lifetime tactic though.
kenny goes onto the blue surface twice in race 2. is that allowed?
can't believe this was 3 years ago :(
It is allowed on the straights and if it is not consistant.
Superior.
Im new to the sprinting bicycling, why do they go i circles slowly before hand, and why does he keep looking back?
Cat and mouse if the front rider took off the rider behind could slipstream and use less energy and overtake whenever he wants
Why do they start off slow ? why does the person ahead keep looking at his opponent? why why why
+Zaed Harhara saving their energy to sprint / waiting until he/she makes a move

+michael' "explode your full power" that's a good one
+michael' Why can't just start fast like foot sprints. You do that saving the energy thing for distance races, this is just a sprint, right?
+Rolan Reynacido, because the speed in cycling is much higher than in running the rider sitting behind saves a lot of energy because the rider in front of him is breaking the air. what is there gear ratio?
i know chris hoy got his gold w 52-14
I once did 70 kph on a bike. Down a steep hill. With the wind behind me.
wattage / 10
Thats nonsense, cavendish and wiggins both did a lot of track cycling as well as Geralt Thomas.
why the time lapping start lately?
It's the final 200m that are timed.
A lap is 250 m, the timer in the sprint always starts with 200m left to go, that's just how it is.
These people can outrun any 👮
One girl missing
hoy v kenny glasgow 2014 commenwealth games.........if hoys not past it by then.
The frog was carrying far too much weight, no wonder he lost.
British girls are beautiful
Ah.
He will be too old in the next olympics(32). The competition will be even higher.
Sir Chris hoy was older
Hal Wright But that was Hoy, who always beat Kenny, even when he was 36. I am pretty sure Callum Skinner will be able to beat Kenny next time.
Well Callum is retired and Kenny just won his 7th Olympic Gold! What a legend!
Oh, sounds more complicated than it should be...
3 rounds in 2 minutes? I think I could cover it faster.
Hopeless audio
DOPING bad guy!
no chance. hes clean as a whistle the rest have work to do
Peak english cycling doping
