    why isn't the voltage across the inductor equal to -L(di/dt)? why doesn't it have the minus sign in some cases such as this?

      With AC current the direction of the current changes constantly and thus in each cycle the sign will change multiple times per second. However in order to account for the voltages traveling around a loop, just like with a resistor, it is assumed there will be a voltage drop across an inductor. In the end it depends on the phase angle. If you are interested, there are many videos in the electronic engineering portion of this channel that explains all that in great detail.

    THERE IS NO ENERGY IN AN ELECTRIC OR MAGNETIC FIELD!!! For instance, the electric field has units of V/m or N/C. These are not units of energy! Example: when a ball rolls down a hill, the ball has kinetic energy, but the gravitational field by itself has no energy. The same thing happens to an electron in an electric field (between two unequal potentials). Do not compare EM-radiation with a rope containing masses. The combined EM-field does not contain masses that are going up and down. Only when an EM-field gets in contact with charged masses, then the transverse fields give these masses energy. But while propagating through vacuum, an EM-field only has kinetic energy in its longitudinal direction! That's where the speed of light is coming from.

      There is indeed energy in a magnetic field caused by an inductor. (how else can it keep the current going when you turn of the voltage source?)

      @@MichelvanBiezen A voltage source only gives a difference in potential, like the slope of a hill gives a difference in height. Without an electron or a ball there is no energy around. Interesting to see that you can't distinguish potential differences from energy. I think that U = q . V is a rather simple equation. It says, without a charged particle q there is no energy U (only a voltage source V). NO FIELD CONTAINS ANY ENERGY! THAT'S WHY IT ISN'T EXPRESSED IN UNITS OF ENERGY.

      There are two options: a. you never really understood the subject, or b. you never dare to have a different point of view. I wouldn't be proud of both of them, Michael. But keep justifying your own mistakes, my friend. Many people have a hard time to admit their errors in life (especially profs). But by now, I'm sure you realise the title of this video is WRONG.
