Rich people are leaving California taking their tax revenue with them

- California's exodus has been well documented. In the past two years, more than 500,000 people have left the state for places with less crime, cheaper housing and different opportunities. After generations of growth, the state's population peaked at 40 million in 2019 but has been dropping ever since. A new study from the Public Policy Institute of California shows that the wealthy are fleeing the golden state, taking their tax contributions with them. The group says the trend could drastically reshape the makeup of the state as the top 1% of earners contribute 50 percent of the state's tax revenue with the top 10 percent of earners contributing 80% of taxes collected in the state.

You can't keep taxing people so heavily and outright failing to tackle homelessness, crime, and business issues.
Too much parasitism ultimately will kill the host.
The thing is the homeless people don't affect the rich areas.... but keep crying about it
They're not failing with the homeless problem, people in charge of it are making 250k a year. Would you genuinely fix a problem that makes you 250k a year, or just.. give food once in awhile to tide people over?
They can… no accountability… who cares…
Rich people aren’t getting taxed heavy and that’s the issue? LoL
This reminds me of that college woman who came on the news trying to say we should tax the 1% higher. When faced with "Well, what if they bail and now you get no money?" to which she replied "Well... there'll always be a top 1%." Well here you go.
Indeed. But then your pool gets smaller and smaller until eventually, that dummy IS the 1%!!!
That statement is why the communists were always poor. The rich people leave or get killed off and their assets are mismanaged.
I used to believe the top 1% earned their money but now I know most of them are con artists with connections
There’s a similar one where some of the people wanted to tax the top 20% of earners at a higher percentage then come to find out they’re in the top 20%
Newsom has even proposed an extra tax on people who leave.
This happened in France too. They jacked up taxes on the 'super rich', and these people bought homes in other countries and moved. France ended up with less tax revenues than if they'd left the rates alone. They had to lower taxes again.
That's what people never understand. The "super rich" have plenty of choices and lots of mobility. It is extremely easy for them to pack up and leave in the face of oppressive taxation.
Unfortunately the leftie wing nuts just don’t understand that concept
@@davidcox3076 Too many people act emotionally on their resentment for others vs. rationally on what would eventually be in their own self interest, They would rather spend their time and energy tearing others down than build themselves up.
It really is cutting off your nose to spite your face. In the short term, promising "free" stuff will get you elected...until the bill come due, then you eventually either have to reverse that or get voted out. Funny enough, this is why socialism cannot support free elections...because they would get voted out.
Now they're rioting because the state has no money for pensions
Now CA is considering an unconstitutional "exit tax". The state believes themselves entitled to your income for ten years after you leave.
Ah, the Chuck Schumer solution
Imagine the litigation that will be involved in enforcing such an unconstitutional demand. Nobody, and I mean nobody, will hand over anything without lengthy and costly litigation. California prosecutors will have no time left to prosecute everyday crimes.
The Supreme Court ruled on this over 100 years ago and it is an illegal tax that has already been determined.
Insane
They cant enforce that 😂
I work for a logistics company in California and over the last 10 years I can't even begin to tell you the amount of people we've relocated out of this state...... 99% of them complaining about liberal political climate across the board
Logistics is relocating for all kinds of tax reasons (Even in Canada) and (EVEN IN CANADA) THE homeless go where the support systems are. They obviously (for you) need a "kinder, gentler machine gun hand). and THE LOGISTICS industry pays crap and likes non-union or right-to-work states for exactly that reason. It's no so "simple" a concept. Many factors have been building for decades.

You hit the nail in he head. I left California 18 yrs ago. Now I can go vacations, bought myself a nice little sports car, nice clothes, and dine out -basically have a good life. And plus, I make more money now than working in California.
This is scary. Rich people pay politicians to make sure they get access to taxpayer funds first when banks shutter or they're in jeopardy of losing all their money. I feel bad for the lowest paid workers that may be affected, but not CEO's. A lot of them have created this abusive corporate pay structure where they are paid 300 to 400 percent the salary of entry level workers. Most add very little value. They posture and perform with speeches, meetings, and excessive travel to provide the appearance of working hard. It's a con.
A friend recently moved to Nashville and quickly discovered that five neighbors on his street were all from California.
love the victim blaming lmao.
California has been through this cycle. It's actually a good thing they are leaving. It will benefit the ones who stay with time.
@@UncleBensRice... except it won’t because the top 10% pay 80% of CA tacked.
Agree
This is the beginning of the economic "death spiral". It's not so much the millionaires and billionaires leaving, it's when the upper middle class earners are leaving, which they are. Those that make between 100K-250K are now leaving. They're taking their tax revenue with them. California is so desperate that they're trying to tax residents as they leave the state. Note to all: I've lived 36 of my 50 years in California. I've lived in the Bay Area, Riverside County, and San Diego. I've worked in both the central valley and the Sacramento area. I currently live in San Diego county. I'm saying this to head off all of the typical "California is the 6th largest economy" in the world or the "California subsidizes" the red states commenters. I can tell you from first hand and years of experience that California is declining fast. The homeless problem is totally out of control. The crime, especially in the cities, is not only out of control, it's totally unaddressed. Believe me, I've lived in California longer than most of these commenters have been alive.
Another thing is ppl like me. Born and raised in orange county and found it hard to make a decent living after the military. I moved out at 33 and now make a 6 fig income. Ppl and other talking heads say its only broke people that are leaving because they cant afford to live here. That may be partially true. There are many people like me who have come up in a big way when they arent being screwed 6 ways from sunday. Cheers.
Lmao. TIL in upper middle class. Def doesn't feel like it. I feel poor AF.
The whole country is declining my friend, and nobody wants to talk about it or do anything about it. Just keep quiet and behave!
No disaster without liberals. :)
California will be a 3rd world country soon. how can they legally tax people who don’t live in the state? They want to pay for all these free social programs. Free health care for illegal immigrants for one which is unsustainable. They will have to start cutting these programs soon.
In Texas, the influx of Californians has jacked up housing costs, spiked the cost of living and made highways unbearably slow. I miss the old Texas, sadly I’m leaving for another state.
Wow, that sucks
Prices are going up all around the world, so why would Texas be exception? Or Californias are moving all around the word!? Right, probably not… stupid conclusions
I live in south Texas Wayyy bottom of Texas and it’s not that bad here 🤔 prices are affordable we got a nice beach and traffic isn’t bad honestly 🤠
That’s only in the major cities.
And making Texas a democrat state
I left 90 days ago and it’s been the best decision of my life. I never thought I’d be able to buy a house until now. I don’t feel the pressure of having to make 100k. There no traffic and people are so nice and friendly.

I’m trying to figure out why it took them so long to come to their senses to leave.
It’s not rich people leaving that’s really the problem. If you lose the ambitious young people, that’s when you are in real trouble. They see older people leaving, and they learn why, then they follow because they realize there’s no sense building a life where others will try to take it from you.
Facts. My friends and I (mid-twenties) all grew up in the bay area and we all either never came back after college or are living with parents at home because those are really the only 2 options. That is unless you're comfortable never having a room to yourself or never being able to save a dime. We all have damn good degrees and potentially lucrative careers but even then California just isn't the place anymore. God, I miss that weather and geography though
@@twins123dodgers Got transferred there in the mid 90’s, lasted less than a year. Realized it was crazy and moved back to Texas. Have two cousins still there. They don’t appear to have a heck of a lot of savings.
Young people go where rich people are.
@@T1kr3b3u While that's certainly true, it doesn't change the high cost of living in the area. Even if you pay nothing in taxes, you're still paying an exorbitant amount for *everything*. And unless you land a lucrative starting position at one of the big firms in the state, it's nearly impossible to have a respectable life on your own with money left over for healthy savings. Of course, this mostly applies to the desired areas of the state. You can definitely have a decent quality of life in, say, Stockton, but then you have to live in Stockton
@@twins123dodgers isn’t Stockton a high crime area for a small city? You are correct that high cost of living is the underlying issue for most people whether it’s caused by taxes or not. We left Santa Rosa. After we lost our home to the Tubbs Fire, Sonoma Co, wanted $45,000 in permits to rebuild our 1500 sq. ft. home. Just disgusting.
We sold the lot, and it's still empty. They haven't collected real property taxes on that lot since 2017. How does that make economic sense?
The sales tax on building materials, the property taxes on a home, the income taxes for the contractors, plus our income taxes lost to another state.

I left because of the crime. It’s a shame because I loved living in my neighborhood. But everyone I know either has been robbed, gotten their homes cased, assaulted, or knows someone who had this happen to them. Even Beverly Hills isn’t safe anymore. The Flats constantly have helicopters over the the homes because home invasions and break ins are becoming common. Yet there are a lot of Angelenos who think the open drug use, near elementary schools and day cares, fires, assaults, frequent home invasions, follow and robs, homeless people defecating in businesses serving food and supermarkets, and then carrying weapons to harm people is normal. The rest of the world doesn’t act this way.

Me too, i live in a red state now and though there are trade offs...(lack of diverse foods, lack of culture, lack of diverse people, lack of entertainment) but the safety is without doubt the key reason why i chose to live here. Everyday it is so quiet i can hear the birds chirping and the solitude is real, there are no tarp, no tents, no homeless who yell at you. I lived 30 years in San Francisco and i dont remember ever walking outside and not feeling tense or nervous. Red states are not always "better" but anything is better than crime infested city blocks.
Even those of us who are not rich are also fed up….and have left.
They may not have income taxes in Texas, but your property tax is where they make up for it. It's brutal. Those folks will find themselves in homes 25-36% smaller for the same money

Average house in Reno circa 2016, $350k.
Today, $750K. Thanks to Sisolak.
Just qualifying to rent a 1 bedroom apartment in a decent neighborhood, you need a household income of $40k annually.
At work, our low end staff is constantly turned over. They only make $30k a year, at best. They can't afford to stay.
Who didn't see this coming? If you tell the rich you're going to tax them more they are going to use their mobility to make a change with their feet.
In California, the government says : There are always rich people there no matter who left; while the people say It’s always the rich being taxed, we don’t care. And where did our taxes go? we middle class never know. But one thing is always true: CA government officials are richer and richer, and they do not pay enough tax!
I wonder why California's governor doesn't care?🤔
His voters don't care. He just has to say BLM and take a picture with a pride flag to get reelected.
He's Leaving too...to Washington DC
Because he's about to raise our taxes
cause the middle class pay more in taxes why would he care if the rich leave
Alan M exactly he don't care because al government agencies make a lot money and is our money where i was working before in California the government pay them 10.000 a month.
Our family is counting down the years, and we do well enough financially. We are sick of the autocratic policies here just as much as the taxes on income and everything else.
THE RESON WHY A MOVED OUT OF CALIFORNIA AND moved to Alabama last year? My story, My wife and I ran a small business Downtown in LA, Its are The taxes are so high I had to raise my prices at our store just to make ends meet. When I raised my price I could no longer compete with the big box stores thus losing business and as a result lowering my income. And I could no longer afford my property tax or my business taxes. 2nd California has the highest gas taxes, the highest utility taxes, and the highest Property Taxes in the Nation. 3rd reason crime. I we went to work at our store we drove past countless homeless people living on the street. We would drive by people selling and using drugs in broad daylight with impunity. Also 2 months before we moved, a man came into the store stuck a gun in my face, and told me if I didn't give him all the money in the cash register he would "BLOW ME AWAY' so I gave him the money I called the police they to a report and they promptly caught the guy two blocks away shooting up. He was taken to jail. The very next day the same man again robbed my store and took all my money again. On top of that, I have countless people shoplifting daily sealing everything from cigarettes to toilet paper with immunity. My insurance company dropped me, stating I was too high risk. So I had enough and we moved to Alabama where my wife's mother lives. Now I love California the state is beautiful
There are many free parks the beaches are great and recreation in California is second to none. But we were forced to give all that up including I was forced to leave my mother, father, and two sisters behind. My wife and I started a new business in Alabama and are making way more money than we ever did in California because no one steals from our store or tries to rob me. Not only that taxes are ridiculously low, we now live in a house that is twice the size of the one in California for Half the price. And the property taxes are so low here I don't see how they can afford to fix the roads or anything and don't get me going on gas prices I was paying $5.69 a gallon the last time I filled up 3.39 a gallon. But everything is not all roses. The summer here are extremely hot I mean really hot and humid and there are bugs everywhere. What most surprised me about Alabama besides the cost of living is that my family is black and I was told by all my California friends that I was making a grave mistake because everyone knew that Alabama was the racist Capital of the world! But I came to find out there are far more racists in California than in Alabama. The first day we moved in a white couple knocked on our door and invited us to a family BBQ they were having on Sunday. My wife was sure how we would be treated but we went anyway to my surprise we weren't the only black couples there were lots of them, along with Asians, Filipinos, and Hispanic couples they were laughing, kids playing together. They had just finished church and were invited to my neighbor's home for a BBQ.
The bottom line is I think I'm going to like it here in Alabama and wish I had moved out there years ago. So for my Fellow California don't be afraid to leave there is a brave and better life waiting for you outside California
It's not just "rich" people leaving. It's mostly middle class.
Born and raised in CA. Saw the decline first hand. Family and myself victims of multiple robberies, theft, break ins. I could go on and on about the insanity. Moved to a red state where they ENFORCE LAWS. now I live in peace.
Same here.
Born and raised, but come 2008 and home invasion was my going away present
The red states have the highest crime….but hey facts and data are a waste of time……LMFAO!
8 of the 10 most violent states last year were "red states." LOL
North Korea and China and Hitler's Germany "enforced the laws". Why don't you move there?
Hate to see our house come crumbling down but, they asked for this… life has significantly improved for me as soon I hit CO, UT, and LV. Never giving them another drop of blood.
Do you have a preference of the three?
out of those 3, which one did you like the most?
I left two years ago, and technically I'm a "high earner" though I'm a long, long way from being a top 1% anything. Still, now I own my own house outright and am a semi-retired minor millionaire.
I'm living from SSDI. No way could I do that in Hellifornia.
California needs to do a recall on their Governor. Meaning get him out of office early. Newsom is a clown 🤡
Many Californians have a tax-deferred 401k with a significant balance. It makes sense to consider moving to a state with no income tax, or a much lower income tax. The thought of not incurring state income tax as they either make withdrawals, or do Roth conversions, is very appealing.
Of all the people I know who have moved out of state are retiring or retired. It makes sense from a financial prospective. Me personally I like California to much to leave.
I just looked up CA's tax rates for 2023. CA taxes the poor, the lower middle and middle class people at the same rate that other states tax the rich! Even worse than when compared to no income tax states. The 6% tax bracket in CA starts at just $32,960. If you are making $33K in CA you are POOR. Even other blue states only tax the rich at 5-6%. That is just insane.
@@ae-holo5972 My late husband and I left California 20 years ago and we were nowhere near retirement age. We owned an auto body shop and it became impossible to do business in Los Angeles anymore, so we sold it off (it has closed down a few years after we left) and moved to Idaho and started another business. I only wish we had left California much sooner.
@@lisabaltzer4190 I’m glad it worked out for you. I don’t live in the Los Angeles area, so I don’t have experience with the whole big city issues and homelessness. That for sure makes a difference in my opinion. I have travel to many other states, but wouldn’t move out of my specific community.
@@lisabaltzer4190 The great brains of CA government just outlawed the ability to chrome things. So you cannot make medial devices in this state.
Hardworking taxpayers out…….illegals, the homeless and freeloaders in.
Um, HELLO! The people leaving California are not the ones clogging the freeways, they are the ones with all the money that don't have to commute to work! AND they are taking their money and business to places that don't just treat them like ATMs.
And the California desert, where I live, is now a crowded and weird mix of wealthy CA urban refugees (Palm Springs) Air BnB owners cashing in on the tourist dollars (Joshua Tree) -- destroying recently-affordable housing options -- and a lower income suburban hell sprawl riddled with crime, prisons and huge renewable energy "farms" in the rest of the desert. Worse, our county property taxes have escalated to fund fire services and insurance claims for recent fires in the mountains.
I’ll be leaving New York next year when my last is out of state college. And I’ll be taking my wealth with me. Goodbye
did the same in 2020
I left and took millions of tax money away from them. It doesn't make sense that I would pay all this money and still deal with all the crime
lol troll.
nobody cares
@@cloud-ny5ux you cared enough to comment ;)
@@LamboV12 you really got me there ;)
Good job. I want to leave as well.
In my neighborhood in Playa del Rey, I saw a scary homeless person threatening people in front of a 2 million dollar home. Think of the property taxes that person pays just to have a scary homeless person standing in their front yard.
Don't worry, California has no shortage of new residents moving in to make up for them in sheer number. They like free handouts, decriminalization of crimes, cashless shopping, open hard drug use, warm weather, sunshine, and catch and release no cash bail. New residents are flooding in from the north, east, and south of the border to replenish the rich moving out.
Unlivable place
Bye!
Adios, good bye, see ya.
Lived here all my life and I ❤ LA🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
You voted for it
Take 40 million subtract 500,000 get 39.5 million people is why the freeway and everywhere else is still crowded.
California never had 40 million people.
Feels crowded so I wanted to believe it.
@@toasgreece its probably already happening, but the population decline is so slow you don’t notice it. Take a video when your on the highway now, then one 10 years from now. You might be surprised.
@@tylerkriesel8590 I’m pretty happy about it
Rent for a 800 sq ft 1 bedroom apartment in Fresno is well over $1000 now, depending on where you live (Bad Fresno vs. Good Clovis) there is a $250-$400 gap for the same size place.
Couldn’t happen to a more deserving state, corrupt government officials.
Well I’m not surprised the taxes there must be unbelievable
Finally people are understanding! Geez took long enough. And he just admitted, "we had it wrong"
CA is an awesome state but better figure out how to reverse this trend. Sadly, we prob will leave too.
We get rid of Jimmy Kimmel California might be Okay ✅
Thanks for the good news!
HOW many have left? Not enough.
No- they will keep voting democrap!!!!
The top 10% of earners pay 80% of the taxes collected in the state and the top 1% make up 50% and if you ask a random Californian on the street I bet they'd STILL tell you the rich don't pay their share.
Be smart, Google is your friend.. use it before posting ignorance stuff on RUclips
Numbers dont add up. 80% and 50% make 130% doesnt it? How do you get 30% more than 100%? 2 groups paying more than all of the taxes?
@@ButtmanAtHeart The numbers are cumulative. The top 1% is a subset of the top 10%.
Put another way the bottom 90% of Californians account for 20%. The next 9% of Californians account for 30%. The final 1% of Californians account for the remaining 50%.
They DONT!!!! They should be paying a LOT less!!
@@ButtmanAtHeart I've got neither the time nor the crayons to go over this math...
Should be law that moving out of California is racist.
The cost-of-living is insane in California. 🙅♀️
Reno, NV is already screwed. Go home Californians.
Only the loser quitters are leaving
We are home!!❤
Whats the chances the same people leaving are the same ones who voted for the people and policies that caused them to leave?…and then they go to the next place only to do it again…
Very high now that I think of it
Extremely high. The same policies that screwed CA are being used in many other states. Those who voted for the same policies, if they have a brain, are scratching their heads wondering how it can be so.
Look at Austin, TX. Lefties fleeing the cesspool that they created, moved here and drove up the property taxes and began voting for the same crap. SMH
They ruined Colorado by bringing their voting habits with them. (D's)
Same in Arizona, we’ve had a republican for years just so we can get a democrat and so many coming from Cali, Washington, New York since 2020 and crime has increased ever since
High taxes, woke schools, high crime, homelessness, dirty because of the homeless this place sucks.I’m stuck here because my family is here and they’re the most important thing to me.
Woke schools is completely trumpian made up bullying talk!! Means nothing!! Crazy people😂😂😂😂😂😂
"Woke schools" lmao you people really need a new handful of buzzwords phrases to throw around😅
@@sativadiva2389 Hoping you stay in California then.
Then the whole family can leave together. Do it before things get so bad, no one wants to buy your homes
That's the irony, too. Rich swells can leave. Poor fools cannot. As always, if you ain't rich, yer dah BEEEIIIOTCH! 😂🤣😂
It’s not the wealthy it’s the hardworking people, they are tired of being squeezed.
Top 10% of earners pay 80% of the taxes. And they want out...let that sink in. Crime is out of control and politicians don't want to do anything about it.
Imagine a multi billion dollar deficit and losing your tax base…. I see a complete collapse
DROP THE HOUSE PRICES !!!
In my circle, people who left were renting in San Francisco and relocated inside the company to Austin.
And look what happened to Austin smh
Get out before Newsom starts building his own Escape From LA wall to keep people in.
Every time we go back to California to visit family the areas keep getting worst and worst.
You got that right. I've gone back a few times over the past 20 years only to see more crowds, worse traffic and hear about more insanity cominig out of the totalitarian state governmafia. It won't be long before they turn it into the next Venezuela.
You thought they would leave their tax revenue here? Here is another news flash, they are creating new jobs outside of CA also.
I’m tired of L.A. politics dominating my county 500 miles away.
You mean Sacramento?
The fact that the tele-prompter reader laughingly refers to wealthy Californians as "Golden Geese" shows the level of naked contempt there is towards the economic class of people who pay the most in taxes. The wealthy are leaving California, but who is moving in? More homeless? I left California in 2003 and it was the best decision I have ever made.
The essential thing that everyone should be thinking about right now is investing in non-government sources of income. Especially in light of the current global economic crisis. It is still a wonderful moment to invest in gold, silver, digital money, and stocks.
My portfolio has good companies, however it has been stalling this year. I’ve approximately $700k stagnant in my reserve that needs growth, any suggestions to grow my portfolio will be highly appreciated.
Find stocks with market-beating yields and shares that at least keep pace with the market for a long term. For a successful long-term strategy I recommend you seek the guidance a broker or financial advisor.
you're right! If you are unfamiliar with the market, I recommend seeking advice or assistance from a financial/investment coach. With the help of an investment advisor, I have diversified my $450,000 portfolio across multiple markets, We were able to generate over $1.2 million in net income from seasonally high-dividend stocks, ETFs and bonds. I wondered how long before certain states would notice a massive drop in taxes because of how much they charge in taxes... about time the politicians start worrying.
Time for people to stop voting for stupid ideas, liberal politicians, DA's and more taxes.
