Thank you for this! My son is autism spectrum. My son is very high functioning and not like the “rain man” movie. I feel shows and movies still portray autism so disrespectfully in a negative light and don’t give regard to its wide spectrum with differences. I’m always saying I wish they’d show the ones like my son so people can understand better. Autism awareness is no needed! When I was first faced with the fact my son had autism that “rain man” movie was the first thing that came to my mind. I quickly learned they are not all that way. My son is like everyone else. If he or I tell people he’s on the spectrum they don’t even believe us. When he was very little he had more struggles verbally, socially and with sensory processing. My the grace of God and us striving he gained skills and overcame. He’s graduation bound (16 now) and working towards going to medical school to work as a pediatrician helping children. My son wants to give back. God is so good! Please know my son is nothing like “rain man” or “The Good Dr” show guy. I refused to even watch that tv show because I could see they were portraying autism in the same light as always. Many as my son are like you or me! Autism is so misunderstood by so many and criticized. Not all are like the “rain man” super brains that don’t relate. Not all are non verbal with uncontrollable “tics”. Not all are unsocial or not understanding of interpersonal relationships. Many have these struggles early on but overcome these things. Many have these difficulties and traits, but you’d be amazed at what they can do and understand. Judge not please everyone and know God is using these beautiful autistic minds for His wonderful purposes🙌🏻 Even those who are on the more severe end of the spectrum! God can and will use all! Thank you again and I can’t wait to watch this film with my son💙God bless🙏🏻

It's a great movie. Thank you Major for your excellent portrayal of this character, who is very real for so many people. We need more movies like this to bring enlightenment to so much ignorance on Autism and the young people who suffer in silence. Movies about about racism and gender are far too saturated. Time to bring attention to the people to actually need our attention and protection.

i was super excited to see that this movie existed, a movie about an autistic person who isn't intellectually disabled. and i couldn't believe how much i related to what tyson went through in that science class scene, it took so much strength to even watch it, it broke my heart knowing that that could even still happen. and i laughed when major said he would become obsessed with things and only talk about them-- my parents got so good at tuning me out when i talked about american girl dolls and the brady bunch that i really don't think they listen when i mention either of those things anymore LOL. i wish i knew of more autistic people in the acting industry (all i know of is dan akyroyd, paige layle, and now, major, but considering dan akyroyd has only ever played neurotypical characters i think it's high time he didn't for once)

My son is diagnosed ASD . Mistakes have been made in the past but now they know Autism has the levels Autism level 1 2 and 3 . 3 being most severe. Asperger’s is not even in the DSM anymore . My son has Level 1 Autism and wasn’t diagnosed until he was a teen . Until 5 years ago people who were diagnosed with ADHD weren’t even tested for Autism

Doesn't matter if a neurotypical is playing an autistic, it's acting, the whole point is to play a character and not yourself. The actors in marvel movies don't really have super powers, Denzel Washington isn't really a cop even though he has played many and Liam Neeson doesn't really have a particular set of skills....... I'm autistic as well.

    *ABC's of Salvation*
    *A* - Admit you're a sinner in need of a Saviour (Romans 3:10, 6:23)
*B* - Believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins (1Corinthians 15:3-4)
*C* - Call upon the Name of the Lord and be saved (Romans 10:9-10, 10:13)
Believe what Jesus Christ did for you on the cross and be saved. As Paul said in the book of *Ephesians 2:8-9* - _For by grace are you saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Not of works lest any man should boast._

I'm am autistic and im asking for your direct communication on your comment. Are you implying people with autism are sinners simply because they are autistic? Please explain your comment in a clearer more direct manner. That would be most appreciated, thank you

Nice interview, great actor, but this isn't autism. This is more like Aspergers. Please stop confusing people. Hollywood is extremely ignorant about what is autism. So is most of the media. "To meet diagnostic criteria for ASD according to DSM-5, a child must have persistent deficits in each of three areas of social communication and interaction plus at least two of four types of restricted, repetitive behaviors.
    1. Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts. 2. Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, ranging, for example, from abnormal social approach and failure of normal back-and-forth conversation; to reduced sharing of interests, emotions, or affect; to failure to initiate or respond to social interactions.
Deficits in nonverbal communicative behaviors used for social interaction. Poorly integrated verbal and nonverbal communication; to abnormalities in eye contact and body language or deficits in understanding and use of gestures; to a total lack of facial expressions and nonverbal communication. Deficits in developing, maintaining, and understand relationships, difficulties in sharing imaginative play or in making friends; to absence of interest in peers." Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities, as manifested by at least two of the following:
Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements, use of objects, or speech (e.g., simple motor stereotypes, lining up toys or flipping objects, echolalia, idiosyncratic phrases).
Insistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines, or ritualized patterns of verbal or nonverbal behavior (e.g., extreme distress at small changes, difficulties with transitions, rigid thinking patterns, greeting rituals, need to take same route or eat same food every day). Highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus (e.g., strong attachment to or preoccupation with unusual objects, excessively circumscribed or perseverative interests). Hyper- or hyporeactive to sensory input or unusual interest in sensory aspects of the environment (e.g. apparent indifference to pain/temperature, adverse response to specific sounds or textures, excessive smelling or touching of objects, visual fascination with lights or movement). Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning. Source: CDC, Diagnostic Criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The DSM no longer has a diagnosis called aspbergers. The autism spectrum is very wide and what used to be called aspbergers is high functioning autism. I am high functioning and probably come across like this actor, and I meet all of the DSM V criteria for autism.
