  • The Tuam Baby Scandal, is a story of women who had their babies taken from them, some died through birth, some died of malnutrition, some of neglect but most could have been saved. Mothers had to give birth without proper medication as it was said to be punishment for their sins..(having a baby outside of marriage)
Some babies and young children were taken from their mothers and sent away illegally to be adopted.
Some never got to find their children some children never got to see their mothers again.
This is not an isolated incident of babies who died in mothers and baby homes, unfortunately it happened in other parts of Ireland.
This story is of one of many stories from Ireland.
This is the story of Tuam Mother and baby home, now replaced by a housing estate.
This story is one of mistreated women and their children, babies and young children who died through neglect and dumped. No proper burial.
Now thanks to Catherine Corless and her tireless fight we are finally getting answers.
Thank you Catherine for all your hard work, thank you to those who are coming forward to share their stories.
Sending my love and utmost respect to all the survivors of Tuam Mother and Baby Home x

Thankyou Sue, I remember a number of years ago watching "The Magdalene Sisters" about a similar type home, where the Mothers were slaves in the laundry, and the babies kept in a huge room creche. A couple of girls helped the nuns in the creche, and did so as they saw their own babies, till they were sent to adoptive parents to collect. The poor girls could wash and dress their babies and say "Goodbye" as they handed the babies over to the new parents! There was hardly a dry eye as we left that cinema that day! I myself have been in 3 children's homes in Scotland, and three times they let my Mother have me again. Alas it did not keep her off the drink, and I got away to work age 16yrs. at a live in "Nanny" job, till I could start my nursing career. I'm now 70 yrs old, and your childhood never ever goes away, BUT I am glad to have made it alive! Thankyou again!

I will never understand how something like this could happen to God’s little innocent ones. This was inhumane! You are right, no apology will ever be enough or can anything be undone or tried to be fixed. It’s beyond comprehension. The Church should be ashamed of itself, FOREVER!! Children, rest in the arms of God. ♥️♥️♥️

My heart is broken for all those babies who were given a name only, but no love, not decent care and no chance to live. As an Adoptee born out of wedlock, this saddens me deeply. That anyone who came from that home would have to use the term "survivor"; that should not have happened. Those children didn't ask for any of this; the mothers deserved to be treated with dignity, with kindness with support, not shame as was the case with my mother, back in the day. I'm 65 and I have forgiven my mother for her behaviors as a 17 year old, with no choice but to give me up. I cannot forgive a church for this tragedy; they should have offered a safe haven to these young girls, and nothing short of human decency to the babies. SEPTIC TANKS! How did they sleep at night, did they think their prayers for their souls would be heard if they didn't include the babies they dumped? 😰😭
Sue, this had to be one of the most difficult walks you've had to do, we could hear it on your voice, it just tore at my heart, and we appreciate you so much for remembering the Innocents. I won't forget the Tuam Mothers and Babies.💕🥰❤️

I'm sorry you had go through all that; you didn't ask to be born. None of these children did. It's no wonder that the Catholic Church has such a bad reputation, especially where the maltreatment of children is concerned.
A few years ago, when this scandal came to light, I was horrified. The nuns couldn't give a decent burial to the children who died, but threw their little bodies in a SEPTIC TANK?????
When the remains were discovered, all they could say was, "Meh, sorry about that."
They're just sorry they got caught.
And the Pope and the Vatican STILL say, "Artificial birth control is a sin." Guess they didn't get the news about the Tuam children, overpopulation, world poverty, and dwindling resources. Their way of thinking is about 500 years behind the times.

This is the most hard-hitting video I have seen. Thank you for doing this. In Canada, we have an absolute tragedy being uncovered across Canada regarding the many many graves of First Nations children that were taken away from their families and sent to residential schools that were designed to take away their language and culture. There are literally thousands of unmarked graves of children that are being discovered. There is a similarity to what happened in Tuam, This was run by the Catholic Church, and other 'Christian' institutions. Bless them all and do not forget them.

This made me physically ill. This is yet another reason I left the Catholic church three years ago. I can no longer defend this institution and its behavior around the world. And this is just what we know about. I am originally from Canada and what the church did to the indigenous peoples of North America is reprehensible. Were these babies even baptized ... I wonder. It makes me cry. Thank you so much for this Sue.

Hi, my name is Michelle Martin, I found out that my mum had a baby boy called Steven Paul Sharples 29/11/54. He only lived for about 7 hours. The nurses in the hospital took him away even before my mum could see him and she was told he had been buried in a grave with a lady that was being buried. My dad said he wasn't allowed to go to the funeral as it was for the lady's family only. Since looking into this I have found that he was buried in a mass unmarked grave with 21 other babies at Philips Park cemetery in Manchester. I have been there and discovered there is a full area of these mass graves and none of them are marked. There is a small monument there now that says this is to commemorate all the babies buried there. There were hundreds of babies buried and families never knew where they were.

This reminds me of the things that happened on my dad's side of the family. My dad was Native American, and my grandma and some of her siblings were forced into residential school run by the catholic church. My grandma's little brother died there while being punished for "acting out". He was 6 and the only boy in her family. His body wasn't returned to his parents. He has no headstone or grave. This same story played out thousands of times.
This isn't to downplay the horribly sad story of these poor souls or their mothers who thought their children would be given a good life, even if it was against the mother's wishes. I can't imagine the devastation they felt when they found out about this.
Reading the names at the end i see my mother's maiden name several times and can't help but wonder if any of those lost babies are my relatives.

I’m watching the show through RUclips today. It breaks my heart. All those defenseless babies!!! And Nuns capable of such atrocities???? I’m half Irish and brought up catholic. I went through the parochial schools and catechism. Nuns teaching me all day long. Never could I have thought that this was apart of my world. Like priests that commit molestations, I can’t comprehend the evilness inside those usurpers. Hold tight to the cross. Don’t blame a country (Ireland). It’s “people” making evil. Pray for God’s mercy on their souls.

The catholic Church have committed a lot of atrocities, some of the most devastating abuse cases I have known of. Women and children were the target of men and women who were deemed to be priests and nuns, the abuse was sexualising, cruelty, labour camps, and scary to say many other things. Grant me the serenity to forgive what cannot be changed, my heart rages over those poor souls who have died at the hand at servants of God. I know God has judged them who have done wrong. I will always grieve a innocent loss, but forgive those that trespassed against them. Sue your vlog was very touching, I could feel your pain.

Firstly, thanks for remembering Tuam, it must of been a hard but necessary visit. When you said " no apology could ever fix this" I so agree. Only demons could do such a terrible deed, and I would never believe those responsible would be sorry. As for all who suffered under this I can only hope they are now all at peace in God's care.
