- The Vought F4U Corsair is an iconic aircraft. ✈️
Celebrated for its gull-wing design and the eerie, high-pitched sound it produces during flight, this aircraft's distinctive features helped conceal its capabilities, making it a symbol of American courage and innovation in the Pacific Theater.
While attending the @FlySnF Aerospace Expo, we had the privilege of speaking with Louis Horschel, a partner at @stallion51fltops, who highlighted the unique engineering of this aircraft, from its iconic gull-wing design to its powerful 18-cylinder Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasp engine.
My pop flew these during WW2 and Korea and loved them. He’s buried at Arlington. Happy Fathers Day dad. Semper Fi!
I have an older cousin who is still buried
With his Corsair near the island of Palau...he is a Marine Corps Aviator and he was KIA defending America against the axis powers....I hope he will always Rest in Peace..

Thank you for his service.
Rest in peace, cousin.
May he rest in peace .
I still think this is by far the best and most beautiful plane of WW2 Era planes, beautiful
Only to be compared to the Spitfire. which was also amazing.
@gadgetroyster absolutely love that plane as well
My dream was to fly in a corsair… that dream came true in 1986. Never will I forget that day!!!
That's definitely a bucket list item.
I thought they never made any that weren’t single seaters??
I love this plane.
I watched Black Sheep Squadron as a little kid. I loved that show and I love this plane.
Thanks for putting it on you tube..
BUM... BUM BUM... BUM BUM.. BA DADA BA BA BUM... BUM BUM.. BA DADA BA BA BUM
Hey Boyington you gonna come up and play.
You bet Riceball just you and me.
Ah Boyington I think I send you swimming.
@@ghost4-6 "come on up boy-ing-ton, the water is fine"
Black Sheep Squadron was the best! Came on around 1:00 on Saturday where I was, if I remember correctly. The intro was great.
If you get the Heros and Icons (H&I) you can still watch it.
This is by far one of the best looking plains of its time. In my opinion
Plains?
Cognate.
Planes
One of my favorite ww2 birds without a doubt!
It’s such an amazing aircraft!
I’m teaching my grandson about the Corsair by letting him watch as one is being restored locally. They are the most beautiful planes in the world! My opinion of course.
Possibly the coolest WW 2 aircraft that fought in the air. And the P51
Along with the f6f Hellcat and the P-38 Lightning. All magnificent aircraft, but yeah, the Corsair is my favorite from WWII.
Pappy said he loved 'em all. Except that rascal Washing Machine Charlie.
The former help him return home from the Pacific. The latter tried to prevent his return.
So you have never seen a Spitfire or Mosquito... You should get out more.
@@stevetaylor8298 Indeed the Spitfire and Mosquito are magnificent aircraft... I hope you'll forgive an olde former member of Uncle Sam's Yacht Club for my affection for the afore named aircraft. At least I did not name all the aircraft that I supported about a half century ago, nor did I mention all the aircraft I appreciate. That would have taken up pages.
Regarding getting out more, you've got that right. However, at my age and with a broken 'wing' I'm having to stay close, but thanks for the kind advice.
P.S. Fly Navy 🙂
The f4 Corsair the p51 Mustang and British Spitfire are some of the best allied fighter planes of world war 2.
My favorite fighter of WWll! Thanks for posting!
Me too!
Nicknamed the "bent-wing widow maker" the F4U ranks high....but, respectfully, It must share top place with the P-51
We forget so quickly, this plane is 80 yrs old! Awesome 👏🏼
Great airplane, but to illustrate progress, the SR-71 first flew 60 years ago in 1964.
A beautiful Bird !
It sure is!
Pappy Boyington forevermore VMF214...SemperFi
RIP Papa Greg
The F4U was supposed to be the Navy's top fighter in WW2. But, the Navy pilots had trouble landing the plane on simulated carrier decks ...so, the Navy dumped the F4U on to the Marines.
The Navy then ordered the F-6 Hellcat, which was a more traditional design.
@@pigdroppings you’re skipping the Wildcat
@@stevek8829 The F4U was built to replace the obsolete 1,000 hp Wildcat.
Both the F4U and the F6 Hellcat had the same 2,000 hp engine....PW 2800.
In the early 1990s I helped repair a home of a man who worked for Vought in Garland Texas in WW2 building Corsairs.
He showed us a photo album of pictures taken during the manufacturing.
Mr Peck told us that the day the Corsairs made their debut in the Pacific the management piped in Tokyo Rose.
Her statement was something to the effect
"The pilots of Imperial Japanese Military congratulate the Americans on their new airplane.
They have nickmamed it Lightning Death."
RIP Mr Peck
It's really a beautiful airplane
Stunningly beautiful war bird
The P-51, F-4U, and P-38 were beautiful aircraft.
Don't forget the P-47 Thunderbolt.
My 3 favorites!
Yes, and I'd add the P-47 Thunderbolt to your list.
@@claiborneeastjr4129 If I were a fighter pilot in WWII I’d prefer to fly the p47 over anything else. What a tank!
P-47? A fantastic brute, like the F4U.
The Japs called the Corsair the "whistling death."
Always interesting to learn why a plane looks the way it does. Dropping the wings for the landing gear on the Corsair.
Kind of like building a plane around a gun for the a-10 😆
It was for the prop that the wings are designed
They also improved the pilot's view, especially when approaching the flight deck on landing.
The gull wing isn't actually there for the reason given in this. It has to do with drag reduction. The fuselage shape is round where the wing root joins it. You want the wing to join into that round shape so that a tangent line on the circle runs perpendicular to the wing at the point where it joins the fuselage for minimum drag. That means if the wing is straight, it should join in the center of the fuselage like on the F-4F Wildcat. If you keep the wing straight but lower it, you have to accept increased drag. The F-4U design team bent the wing downward in order to get the low wing placement, but also to keep drag low. As a nice coincidence, this allowed the main landing gear to be quite short, but also very strong, and provided plenty of prop clearance. The very far rearward cockpit placement gave the F-4U atrocious pilot visibility on the ground, and the gull wing doesn't really help with that since the issue is how high up the engine cowling sits in front of the pilot. I can link some excellent, but pretty technical, videos on F-4U design/performance of anyone wants them.
@@nomar5spaulding thank you. Glad not everyone thinks the design was cause of the prop.

My grandfather was a Corsair mechanic in Korea. I have always loved these planes mostly because the connection to the stories he would tell us as kids.
Absolutely a beautiful aircraft
One of the best.
Dad was in a B25 Mitchell while my Uncle was in a lovely Pappymobile in the South Pacific. He loved his Corsair.
My dad flew P-51....WWII....19 years old....
Just beautiful my favorite warbird. Great run through in her features. Many never mention the reason for the gull wing design
I learned years ago why it had the bent wing, it being beautiful was just an added bonus. When you look at how rugged it is, being a carrier plane makes sense.
Hard to land on a carrier. British figured out how to land it on a carrier.
Yeah it mostly land based in WW II.
Gorgeous airplane.
gorgeous plane
Love it. Along with the P51 mustang. Heros 😊
One of the most beautiful planes ever made!
I used to work with Mr. Riley at the Kissimmee Airport. Loved all the Mustangs, T6's always out flying!
I too watched black sheep squadron and still to this day the F4U Corsair is my all time favorite aircraft

The Corsair has to be my favorite WWII plane and definitely top 5 over all. Such a sexy profile with the gull wings.
Top 5 of my ALL TIME favorite aircraft.
Best designed prop airplane ever. I have loved the Corsair since being a young kid!
My favorite WWII aircraft . Thanks to the Brits to help figure out a good method for safe carrier landings.
Lucky for the Marines they got to use this beautiful machine . Nice post.
The F4U Corsair is the most awesome fighter of WWII. I love the F4U Corsair ❤

Beautiful corsair and the spitfire my favourite ww2 planes ever gorgeous
Beautiful Airplane
Just beautiful.
Truly an aircraft that was built around a massive engine. They went to the engineers and said, "Here's the engine we're going to use, make the rest of it work with that engine.
Absolutely gorgeous plane. Thank you for keeping her alive. Godspeed.
Amazed by its beauty
Beautiful aircraft! 🇺🇸👍🇺🇸💪🇺🇸
I was so blessed as a kid a family friend was a producer on black sheep squadron and I got to see all these fantastic aircraft and cast during filming out at indian dunes California.

My fave show as a kid was Baa Baa Blacksheep. Love those planes
Those wings are so recognizable
I love the F4U CORSAIR
Beautiful bird ! Congrats🎉🎉
Thank you for explaining the reasoning for the gull wing. Beautiful Bird . Brit here
That is a beautiful Corsair
The coolest bird to ever fly.
Effin beautiful
Genius design work!
Some guy had one of these at the Watsonville airport in the late 50s . . . it was such a cool sight watching him do TOLs . . . and low level passes . . . the sound was incredible . . .
It's amazing how "this airplane" he flew in to the show can magically change its propeller from 3 to 4 blades... My brother is named for my father's best friend who died in a Corsair at Yokohama when the engine failed on final. It was the only WWII fighter that continued in production thru the Korean War.
Corsair has always been my favorite plane, long before "Baa Baa Black Sheep" (now "Black Sheep Squadron") - I watched the show because of the plane.
Some 25 years ago, I got to go to the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. They had a Corsair on display, with a Korean War veteran who flew one there, as the guide for it. He saw the twinkle in my eye, as he still has the same twinkle, he let me climb into the cockpit for a bit!! WHAT A THRILL!!
Beautiful.
My favorite plane.
Beautiful plane
An extremely monster badass airplane.
NICE !!!!! Tough machine !
Gorgeous!
Beautiful bird!
This is by far my favorite airplane from WW2. Even today it’s still the most iconic plane I can think of. As a kid I loved watching the old Black Sheep tv show. And as a Marine, it’s the one plane I associate with our service especially.
And it’s just simply a cool looking airplane. Super powerful and a good bomber/fighter/attack aircraft. It did it all, kinda like us Marines.
It was just a cool part of my childhood that only became more interesting as I got to earn the title of Marine for myself. That’s probably why I like it as much as I do in all honesty.
Beautiful old beast
I have always wanted to fly a Corsair , beautiful aircraft & fast.

Machinists who that this up were super smart. Lucky we had many. Look at all in the industy.
Awesome airplane!!!!
Great plane. So cool.
saw a pair of these on the ground and then later they did flybys this last year at Oshkosh, magnificent aircraft.
Great plane, great speech
F-4U the most beautiful plane of WW2.
My favorite single engine fighter is the F4U Corsair. For a twin fighter, I'd add the P-38 Lightning. For bombers, I love the B-25 "Billy Mitchell." ❤
What a beast…..I always loved the design. They look like they are going 900mph sitting still.
Beautiful
Beautiful aircraft. One of my favorites. The F4 Phantom is the other.
