    Great vid of Utrecht (born there, still living in the city). Fun fact: this year 2022 the city celebrated it’s 900 yr ago granted “city rights” which were granted as you’d guess in 1122.
    In Roman times some 2000 yrs ago this place was already mentioned as “Ultra Trajectum” because of the possibility to wade through the river Rhine here and there was a Roman fortress too.

    Finally a good travel vlog about my town! You actually really nailed the vibe and appreciate the town correctly which is nice! Especially appreciate not saying we're a mini-Amsterdam :D
    Also you walked by the prettiest parts. Zwartewater is indeed one of the prettiest streets imo. The little park adjacent is maintained by volunteers from the neighbourhood in honor of the man who made it. Very sweet spot.
    Where you had the picknick is also one of my favorite spots. That bit of park was made recently after the highway there was demolished and they restored the Singel (the old city moat).

    Utrecht and Bruges peaked around the same time (12-15th centuries), perhaps Utrecht a bit earlier - and it never grew as large as Bruges would. Holland began to overtake the other parts of the Netherlands as the center of international trade in the 16th century, because Bruges, Antwerp and Utrecht were occupied by the Spanish and many wealthy citizens fled to cities in Holland. This resulted in the collapse of the economies of these historical capitals, and the remaining citizenry were unable to afford new facades for their buildings. Thus these cities have maintained more of their late-medieval character. There is some difference, though, in architectural style between Utrecht and places such as Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp. In the southern Netherlands the 'Mannerism' Renaissance architecture was much more ornate and bombastic, while in the northern Netherlands it was usually more reserved, featuring a lot of exposed brickwork. This also reflects the economic disparity between the two parts of the Netherlands at that time. Even though Utrecht was the wealthiest and largest city in the northern Netherlands, it could not rival the cities in the southern Netherlands. But if you haven't been educated in Dutch architectural history, you might not be able to distinguish some of those styles from later baroque architecture, of which there are some examples in Utrecht as well. Only in the 19th century Utrecht was able to recover economically, as the invention of railways made trade and travel over land faster and more economical again, compared to water barges. Due to the railway companies and steel-factories, Utrecht started to expand outside of its medieval borders for the first time since like the 14th century. All those centuries Utrecht was in a slumber, Amsterdam was building and trading, attracting people from all across the world. So while the cities are often compared, they have a very distinct history, culture, and ethnic makeup. Recent governments (Rutte included) have tried to marry the two cities in a new province, but they have all failed.

    • @IfWeGoTo
      @IfWeGoTo  2 года назад +1

      Thank you so much for the thorough history!! Really neat to learn why the architecture is so varied and how economics played a role. Right after Utrecht we were lucky enough to visit the cities you mentioned - Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Brussels.. which were all beautiful. Would be interested to see the architectural differenced in the Southern parts of the Netherlands..

      @i.k.8868 2 года назад

      @Jeroen A. More than Utrecht, I doubt that. Amsterdam sure, as it barely existed in the middle ages. But you are right that Breda and Den Bosch have a lot of character, and are much older than Amsterdam. Groningen is a beautiful city as well, but a lot of the old town was destroyed during and after the second world war. If we are naming beautiful old towns, we can add Nijmegen and Maastricht to the list as well.

    I only just stumbled upon your channel and watched a few of your videos. I must say you’re definitely doing something different and arguably better than most of the other, quasi similar, travel vlogs. I’m not yet completely sure what it is, but I believe it has to do with you guys blending in quite nicely. As if you’re very aware of your role/effect as a tourist/guest and want to avoid making your presence larger than it needs to be. It’s refreshing, to be honest. The result seems to also be that you guys are focused on the experience, improvise, and are not trying to be opinionated at all (the licorice was an exception, but a forgivable one 😂 )

    Bicycle infrastructure in and around Utrecht has been improved an incredible lot, over the past years, and it keeps getting better and better. Goes for most of NL, really, but Utrecht does appear to stand out even in the country. Best nearby place to visit, though, if cycling is your jam, is not Utrecht, but the town of Houten. Which as a town is essentially just a suburb, but centered around pedestrians, cyclists, and well, humans, in a way that is truly inspiring.
    About the mid part of the Dom church, by the way: it did not collapse just out of nowhere, and it had been standing for over 300 years before it collapsed. Reason why it collapsed was a freak storm in 1674, just two years after the army of Louis XIV had plundered the city and rendered it destitute. So after the nave of the church had collapsed, there was indeed no money to rebuild it.
    Also, in 1672, during French occupation, the church had been re-sanctified as a Catholic church. When the occupiers left, it became Protestant again, but many people, including most Utrechters, still viewed the 1674 storm as Divine Judgement, and the people of Utrecht as worthy of God's Wrath. Leaving the city and its people overcome by confusion and depression. Consequently, it took until 1850 until the rubble was fully cleared. I am leaving out a Netflix-series worthy amount of drama that happened in the 175 years in between, here, but that's the gist of why we have a Dom Square!

    Possibly that's an in-joke referring to all the coffee shops in Amsterdam that can get you very high indeed.

The Kingdom Holland was a puppetstate of Napoleon's empire of France. Btw, so good you also visited the non touristic areas of Utrecht. Those parts are often forgotten.
