    Hi Mr. Baumann,
You nailed it. After a couple of false starts with an art class and a private tutor, a young boarder at my house introduced me to Bob Ross.
Well, that was something I could do successfully while learning. So, I did about a dozen paint-alongs with Bob Ross and then started getting bored.
I started working directly from photographs. Initially, these were all the compositions of the photographers, but I was still mastering mixing colors, paint viscosity and lights and darks, proportion, perspective, etc. (still working on all of those). After another dozen or so paintings, I started tentatively do do a few of my own compositions.
I discovered a lot of wonderful artist instruction videos and eventually found you.
I would like to contribute something to your lecture that actually puts two of your principles together in a weird sort of way.
Staying motivated and sharing your work.
I really like most of my paintings and hang them in my stairwell so I can admire them. And, yes, I saw the flaws as I looked at them over time. As I painted better pictures from lessons learned, I took down the ones I liked the least and replaced them with the good ones.
After a while, they became a burden. Excess baggage.
I've been having one or two garden parties a year to share my garden with friends, neighbors and work colleagues. So, I had a garden party and art show and invited several other artists to participate.
With the help of a friend, I made 6 or 8 sandwich type displays and scattered them around my yard, interspersed with beautifully appointed 48" rounds and banquet chairs, with table cloths, centerpieces and my cheap, but lovely, reproductions of Johann DeHavilland china.
A neighbor volunteered to do a pasta bar along with the food that I had prepared. It was an awesome little event that everyone really enjoyed.
Well, I sold about 6 paintings and got about $250.00. It almost covered the cost of the food, beer and wine.
But I still had a stairwell full of paintings that were not sold. Well, I was home one time when the yard guys were mowing my lawn. I invited them all in and asked each one to pick a painting if they wanted one and take it for free.
Then a few weeks later, a neighbor child was going house to house selling old toys to get money to buy some new toys. I told them my children were all grown, but, I had some paintings to sell. If they could sell them, they could keep half and give me half. What could be better than a mobile art gallery?
Then, I was down to 4 painted canvases and stacks of blank canvases in my storage room and studio.
It was such a relief to dispose of all of those paintings without throwing them away, that I got very interested again in painting. Instead of my house being overburdened with completed canvasses, it was full of blank canvasses.
Eureka! My paintings had been shared as best as possible and instead of having a houseful of products (I do see my work as products), I had a houseful of potential art.
But, my life had gotten too complicated with social activities, politics and whatnot. Now, I'm stripping a lot of that from my life so I have time to paint.
    And, I'm producing again.
This is very organic. Paint until you can't stand to have all of those completed canvasses in your space, then share them by hook or by crook and the desire to create more will revive.
It really helps to have them displayed in your house. You see them enough to be willing to let go of them in pursuit of greater art.
Your videos are invaluable to me and I hope this is of some value to you.
    Best regards,
    Gail Spurlock
P.S. My mission statement is to make the world a more beautiful place.
Purpose: I paint for all of the people who can't create their own art. I paint to enrich the lives, with a touch of beauty, of those who do all of the drudge work, the boring technical work, accounting, etc. They need the art and inspiration. . . ;)

I want to make the viewer of my paintings feel and experience the beauty of the world, to help them to connect to things and scenes from real life, feel different emotions towards them. To make it all happen I have to show what I feel and experience, to show the beauty I see.
I watch a lot of videos and most of them teach how to draw certain stuff, and almost never how to be an artist. Your lessons sometimes help me to get over my disappointment, sometimes they encourage and they inspire a lot. Through your videos I found that I am not alone on my path and there are many of us trying to figure it all out. Glad to find you on youtube, you're a great coach.

i know this is an older video but maybe someone will read this and need to hear it: the most important advice i ever got from a mentor is to always, always, always remember that your eye will ALWAYS be ahead of your hand. its the nature of being an artist and part of the process of growing as an artist. like he says, the discerning eye can be such a difficult process for young or new artists, or old really. its the way that artists are truly all equal in, name any master from history and they suffered from the same fate. it doesnt matter what your skill level is, it will never change. so instead of getting down on your hand, take pride in your eye!! your eye that gets you down looking at your own work is proof you're growing!

That is so true. I never actually thought I would paint as well as I do now when I first started because back then, even a couple years ago, I didn’t have the ability to imagine what my work could look like. You have to think about where you began and how far you have come while still striving to put on canvas what you see in your head as finished. You see better than when you first started, more potently and vividly- you know what you are going for. To be honest though, I have thrown away my own paintings in the past... 😁

I was nearly suicidal about ten years ago, because although I had sold many paintings and was known in the gallery system, I could find no meaning behind making art anymore. All I could see was I was sweating blood and tears (my art has always been quite autobiographical) but the problem was that I perceived that all it meant to the world out there was if it matched someone's couch. I couldn't believe that something I loved so much and had given my life for, suddenly had no more meaning to me. It was a long way back to answering the question of 'why make art' and I think I finally have the answers I need, although for many years I really avoided painting. I am back at it now and so grateful to hunger for making that stroke on the canvas. To me now, art is how I pray, and it is how I make meaning in my life. Thank you for your message about legacy and what we will hand to our great-grandchildren. I am thrilled to have found your channel...and oh, how I wish I would have found it back in 2007! Thank you for your inspiring words!

cory k Depression dose that to you. I have clinical depression and get suicidal. I'll get times of lucidity where I can paint again, I just can't do anything when I am not well mentally. Art really helps though but depression robs you of enjoying it while going though it.

cory k 😁Express yourself and dont let anyone get you down! I paint and draw because its whats in me to do. Funny thing....my favorites are usually not others favorites. I dont care! Creativity is God given, and if I like it thats all that matters! Funny thing.....I realized is many who ACT like they dont like them are usually jealous. Sad for them! I love other artists work and continue to enjoy others work. Its not a competion in my veiw, its expressions of who we are!🤗🤗🤗 Happy painting!

I worked on my mission statement this weekend after talking to several of my children. This is what came out: Sherry intends to do her part to create an inheritance for her family and the world around her, both current and future generations that helps to fix their thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable and excellent and worthy of praise. She wants her family, present and future, and others with whom she comes in contact, to encounter the God of Peace and Grace through all of the things she creates. I know it is too long but not sure how to shorten it with out changing the meaning

I think I need to find a legacy other than my kids or grandkids; neither have been or will be part of my life story. I do love the idea, though, it gives one a real meaning and focus to one's art. I'm paraphrasing, but recently I read something about how we tell ourselves that our art doesn't matter, but instead that we should remind ourselves that our art is sacred and that it does matter. Finding powerful reasons and meaning can really help during the doubting times! Thanks so much for all your wonderful and insightful videos.

Wow - you've said exactly what I've been feeling! There is no interest in what I paint -- I've sold a few over the last 10 years so I know they aren't all bad.... but the family isn't interested - the painting I gave the grands sit in a closet (daughter never put them up) and she doesn't want any for her home herself. Only one child... and there's no real place to sell in my area -- showed a few times at the local art council and sold a few there over the years.... but those sales have dried up for everyone. So I haven't even picked up a brush in the last two - going on three years now. I did love painting.... but I've run out of space to store them and don't know what to do with them. Actually thought of donating -- maybe Habitat for Humanity could donate to a new house they build and use to decorate for the new homeowners.... Just collect dust. and none are on my walls at all.... those are taken by art chosen by my husband and I collectively over the years -- other's work. Definitely is depressing and demoralizing for me..... I did relax and enjoy creating.

This is the statement that I wrote a while back, and it has centered me through many paintings > "My purpose as an artist is to awaken in presence, as nature observing itself. This is to be revealed in each painting as I introspectively capture a journey of feelings, places and visions."

+Stefan Baumann this is what I have. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right, but this is where I want my art to go. 'Nohjan creates paintings that depict that anything is possible. To give a feeling of optimism. Nohjan likes to inspire.

    • @donnaryan71
      @donnaryan71 9 лет назад

+Jonathan Moreira Jonathan, I personally prefer the pronoun, "I" rather than writing in the 3rd person (as if someone is writing about you). For example - going on what you have written so far..." I strive to create paintings that depict that anything is possible. (the reason I inserted the words "strive to create" is because when all is said and done, you can't really know for sure that your paintings do in fact depict that anything is possible, but what you CAN say truthfully and accurately is that this is your intention, this is your motivation, this the outcome, the effect that you hope to achieve. Only your audience can truly judge whether your paintings do in fact depict that anything is possible. You can say that this is what you are trying to do, this is your intention. This sounds more reasonable and is easier to accept. I think it is also important to think about what sort of painting do you do? Are you a realist? A landscape artist? Abstract? What is your speciality? It is important to think about this and know this for certain what you do. When someone writes, "creates paintings that depict anything is possible", without seeing their work, I would guess that that person paints things like fantasy or hyperealistic art or or trompe d'oeil. What is your main style or subject matter? What do you specialise in? Knowing what this is helps to know what words to write. And do use the pronoun "I", when you write, not your name "Nohjan". I personally get turned off by biographical information that is obviously written by the person themselves but is made to sound like another person wrote it. The exception to this is if another person really did write it about you, in which case their name would be at the end. Next, define 'inspire'. What are you hoping to inspire in other people through your work? What emotion, thoughts or feelings are wanting to inspire in other people? Get really specific about this. A feeling of optimism - about what? Is optimism the right word, or is there another word that would say it better? I know this sounds like hard work, and it is - it takes time and some real thinking and soul-searching to come up with what is truly the essence of your art. BTW, I am a professional copywriter/editor / communications professional, so I think I speak with some knowledge / experience of what I am talking about. All that said, well done on making a start on it, with a bit of tweaking and massaging (meaning, reworking and editing) you will come up with a short paragraph that will capture the essence of what you want to say. It may take a few drafts and a few tries to come up with something that works, so don't be dismayed if it doesn't come together straight away, you've got people to help you! :)
