That shift from Southern Democrat to the new party, Dixiecrat in 1948, only lasted until the election of 1948. Dixiecrats were another party, segregationist/racist but everything else Democrat. They did this because under FDR and Truman the party was becoming beneficial to black people. But it was in the 1952 and '56 elections that the South started slipping Republican, Eisenhower got several states, as did Nixon in '60. In '64 Goldwater got 4. In '68, Nixon and third-party segregationist Wallace got every state except Texas. It's clear that by that time all those bigots, including Strom Thurmond in 1964, had switched to the Republican party.

We have cultivated this kind of behavior and this is the results…when these type personalities are put on a police force! There is a decline in our social order…that hardly anyone wants to admit exist! But I am 84…and know that our society was not like this just 30-40 yrs ago!

Rodney King happened 30+ yrs ago and that was the first _CAUGHT on camera_ incident by a civilian that c0ps couldn't deny. Sadly, brutal criminal behavior by law enforcement has never stopped.

As a former resident of MS for many years, I can tell you in all honesty that the average citizen WILL NOT TOLERATE this behavior. Most people there get along and treat other ethnic groups with respect. Naming their heinous group as the "goon squad" is absolutely correct. Evil should be first word in that name.

I was born in raised in D'iberville Ms, and as much as I want to agree with you, it simply isn't true. Youd think being in such a coastal spot, with so many tourists it would change people, but it doesn't. I had to move away. If people aren't blatantly racist, they are performing microaggressions, and the moment you say something, instead of taking accountability they blame you. I am Biracial, and was still called things like mutt and dog, amongst many other things. I was profiled by the police, as a child, on several occasions. We all think not our place, until it happens. There are good people, yes, but its misguiding to say there are places where stuff like this doesn't happen. That's how more children and more people get hurt.

It's mind blowing that their oath means nothing. The lay criminal will be punished harder due to aggravating circumstances. If you're a police officer who is sworn to serve and protect and do something like this, being a police officer should be an aggravating circumstance and not a mitigating one. They should be held to a higher standard than the average citizen when it comes to upholding the law and breaking it.
It absolutely blows my mind that we are broadly using the same system when we have evolved so much.
This being said, I support my good police officers, but when we pay them next to nothing and give them the bare minimum training, we wind up with unqualified and incapable officers who turn to crime themselves. I don't know the solution but something needs to change
