He’s suing for lost wages and his money back. The defendant argues the plaintiff told her she wouldn’t have to pay him back if they stayed together. She doesn’t think she owes, so she’s countersuing for lost wages and wasted time.

Beg to differ. I've heard it from my best friend's Italian great grandma back when we were in grade school in the '70s.
She came through Ellis Island and used it referring to bargaining & trying to get the best deal when they were first trying to make a living. (Although it was just a normal part of her speech when she was telling us stories of that long ago. I still didn't get the feeling that it was a good term.)
Then I looked up the term years later and got a much clearer understanding of it.
What's ironic is the term 'gyp' (jip) which also comes from a sect of people (gypsy) and it means being swindled or fooled out of something but it isn't necessarily associated with a race.
Another irony to me is the term Indian giver (I've often wondered if it would ever be renamed 'Native American' giver (since my grandmother wasn't from India but Blackfoot Cherokee from Ohio) So I've heard the term from toddler times)...just things I've thought about over the years.
