I've learned so much with video! That zig-zag, with the little lines on top of that creates a very cool solid effect, brings the figure to the 3D world! The use of different pens and brushes to create more strong shadows in the body, more thin lines the face making it more clear! I'm really excited to use this new technique to create this more dramatic effect in my drawings! I'm going to draw now!!
its amazing what you can learn by watching another artist draw. This answered some key questions about shading and inking without freddie saying a word. Thanks for the vid!
Really amazing work on thor! Loved the inks and the way he used that white to make all that lightning effect! Really learned alot from his inking on how to shade certain parts. I'm still learning on trying to get that comic book style shade so this is a big help! :)
I learned that using white out can help create that dynamic negative space that really gives life to a piece! Awesome seeing the process from start to finish!
Thanks for making such a great video. Haven't seen another show the artists technique and linework in anything like as much close detail as this. The fact that it's Thor is just perfect too!
I learned that different variations of thick and thin lines can help enhance a picture. Using different types of pens, like brush pens or sharpies or even white out, can really give the image movement and character. I also learned that everything does not have to be perfect and even though it looks messy, it can still look like an amazing picture. This video showed me that I need to broaden my horizons and try out different kinds of pens and to practice, practice, PRACTICE!
The idea of using whiteout to help create the lightning FX was very cool. I also had no idea that they use the old fashioned ink pen to help with the finished look. Very cool.
I learned how much time and effort is needed to create a simple piece of paper into a masterpiece of paper and the line techniques necessary for a drawing like this.
I learned that different types of pens can give you different effects and that white out can be used in art in many creative ways! I liked that : ) like how he used it to make lightning and for the spatter effect. I also liked the brush pen! I learned a lot of interesting ways to use pens by watching him
I learned that any type of tool in drawing can be very effective wether its for creating shadows, light areas, or simply just shading everything in with a pencil or black ink, pens or white out. I also learned how to apply creativity into art by being loose with any type of tool
I learned too not be afraid to be creative with a drawing and try new techniques, use different materials. The white pen made the lightning look amazing!
Wow its nice to see some great artists start their sketches the same way I do. I get discouraged/intimidated when I see them just drawing the detail right away and have it look great.
i learnt where to ink, he balanced the general light source with the light source coming from the hammer. I was also watching the inking of the face and where he placed the facial muscles to add detail and realism I also learnt a lot about freddie's interpretations of muscles and proportions, how he balanced the legs and the arms to make his unrealistic image look realistic Hes my favourite artist and i was so lucky to meet him at my comic con in australia, i saw all his amazing art folders :PP
In ink, blacks are generally used to show core shadows, which are the places closest to where the form turns away from the light, and for cast shadows, which is where light is occluded by a form. When limited to just black and white, feathering and hatching are used for gray tones and to soften transition areas. Composition, contrast, and differently textured materials also play a role. The eye is always drawn to high contrast, which can be used strategically.
I've never seen someone do feathering with a chisel tip calligraphy nib... that was pretty incredible in and of itself -- without all the other sweet ass techniques he had... I mean... dipping an old brush pen into other ink to keep using it's sweet ass tip!? I'm totally stealing that.
I know it's late but I'll totally tell you what I learned. get you construction shapes set and don't worry about exact details. just rough it then don't be afraid of black and cross hatching. I've always been afraid of over working an image. this builds some of my confidence. thanks!
I learned how that there are so many inking techniques to utilize, like for the "dry brush", or even using a splatter card to make splatters more precise. I also learned how to shade with certain strokes or lines. :)
One of the most interesting things I learned in this video was the fact that you can revive an old brush pen by dipping it into india ink. This simple trick was awesome to see and I know I will use it in my own art work quite often. Thanks for all the videos Even, they have really helped me improve my art work!
Great sketch Evan. Again thanks for sharing this. He has a great style. The main thing that everyone should take from this is to always be experimenting with tools and techniques. You can get some great textures from even the strangest materials. Using the edge of a piece of card to create rough lines or cotton buds to create a Kirby style energy effect, etc etc. Always use your imagination.
Outstanding work by Freddie! i enjoyed the superman drawing, as well with this definitely. His expansive use with other mediums to produce this piece is fantastic. what an artist indeed!
One of Evan's guest artists was his friend Mark Crilley, the published author and illustrator for two manga series, the first of his manga series being Miki Falls.
I learned that if your PITT artist brush pen runs out of ink, you can just dip it in a bottle of india ink and continue using it! I also learned about Freddie's inking technique and how the entire image and the finished piece are greater than the minute bits, like precisely rendering a specific muscle group or something.
The white out EFX were definetly two of the most suprising things to see but if I count this for one I'd say that the second thing I've learned is how he surprised me by keeping the ink lines simple and not adding details with it (at the contrary of french/belgium comic that I most often read) :)
hey, thanks for all your videos.. I learned how to effectively use the hatching technique to create soft edges around form shadows and also the innovation of using white-out in a piece.
I learned that there are countless ways to create effects just by using one color or as some people like to call it no color. And hatching makes pictures look more interesting then I thought.
I learned to have more patience about the initial roughing stages and also the inking parts of using difierent ink pens and indentifying negative spaces in your drawing for contrasting
I learned that using a calligraphy pen makes for easy hatch lines and also using the flick technique with white out for the "crackle" of the lightning.
Gawd this guy is so fun to watch. Learned a few things here. Getting a basic sketch down...no need to get detail crazy with rough sketch. Second thing is using white out and a card for spatter effect. I used a tooth brush but ot throws paint in a line and the particles are the same size. With a card theres more variations in the spatter sizes. Excelent vid!
I just stumbled across your channel and this is like the 10th video I watched today. So I'll share what I learned... Freddie Williams is a badass artist!
what i learned from this is at first i did not know he used white out and then i realized it.FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!but i also learned more shading skills.LOVE THE DRAWING.BIG MARVEL FAN!!!!! I ALSO LOVE THE SUPERMAN DRAWING(LOOKS REAL)
i learned the way of doing white on black.. its incredible.. never thought that a whitener can be used like that... amazing stuff to watch mann... loved it :)
Well... I learned some hatch techniques, how I can use the brush to give a great effect in the drawing, and how I can make a light effect with the white.
I learned the difference abut using brushes and pens, about giving line quality to he drawing, about use a few lines to define volumes, not to use a lot of black... I learned a lot.
I learned a new way to use white out other than covering inking mistakes but I could also use it as a light effect for various things and a better way to add pretty white dots to my artwork if I was doing a fantasy image.
want to know what i learned? i learned some of the simple techniques used to achieve a mastered look. for example the calligraphy pen used to achieve the hatching close the outline, the card with white out and actually using the white out pen instead of planning for the negative space. these techniques will def help with my art. thanks for the upload.
whoa amazing i learnt heaps I've been drawing for a while but nothing like you i never thought of using the splatter technique or the white out as well i tried drawing Thor but it looks nothing like your's thanks for the helpful drawing techniques
i learned how to use whiteout in a drawing and how it looks great when its used as lightning effects i also learned how to draw thor :) and how you should be patient when using ink, that there is no need to rush things itll all be worth it in the end!
1.) Draw the basic frame as accurately as possible 2.) Some simple inexpensive tricks/tips can give your art the life you never expected. I'm ready to draw now!

it takes skill and balls to ink something so well and then get out the white out and start spraying it around. Very badass illustration.
Heretic amen

I learned that working with positive and negative space make for a powerful illustration. Love the cross hatching and the use of white-out!!
I learned that different variations of thick and thin lines can help enhance a picture.
