Never underestimate the power of older technology. Activating those sirens could've saved more lives. Sirens are designed to be heard even indoors.

Yup, Early on, the FEMA team was talking about having to find satellite phones since cell towers burnt down. No one mentioned HAM radios, but I'm sure the HAMs out there have been responding. HAM is one of the oldest and best ways to communicate.

they didn’t activate them on purpose. Billionaires are the only ones who can rebuild on an island like that while folks who have been there forever will have to relocate. I don’t agree with it either but ya can’t count it out.

As a resident of Kona for over 30 years our tsunami sirens are tested once a month! I believe that a lot of the powerlines were down and these sirens are run by electricity which is one of the reasons they were not going off! The surprise me because you would think in case of an emergency they would have another source to sound off the sirens, but they didn’t… right now it’s search and recovery ! Hundreds of people are still missing!

Authorities should be held accountable. I was in the heart of Lahaina as a tourist and we heard no sirens and saw no police patrolling the area telling people to leave. My husband and I even asked hotel staff when we should evacuate but I was told “let’s wait for the authorities”. The authorities failed the locals, the people of Lahaina. Feeling so sad for everyone there..

      @@johnlandis5889 the evacuating? Around 4.30/5pm.
There were strong wind concerns the day before. Power went out at 2am. I asked concierge the next morning what happened. They were annoyed I asked, but told us it was a hurricane and not to worry.
Around 2pm we saw big billowing smoke from around the corner of the hotel. We ran to ask concierge what to do, they said to go back to our rooms. We went upstairs and packed as we didn’t think it was safe to stand around and do nothing. Then we heard people running in the hallway and loud banging on the doors to evacuate ASAP. We ran for our car and left. No direction from authorities. Just from hotel staff telling us to drive to the evacuation centre (but it ended up burning down) or to drive in the opposite direction of the fire. My partner and I slept in the car at McDonald’s near the airport. We called the Australian consulate for advice and their response was “what do you want us to do about it? Call the local police.” My husband and I said “we’re pretty sure the local police are busy doing other things right now”. Hung up and booked out next flight home at 6am.

Folks who are wondering, here is some information about our beloved Lahaina Banyan. It WILL come back. GUARANS BALL BEARINS!! It was definitely scorched, but mostly on the mauka side, the side the fires came from, but only somewhat scorched on the makai side. But TO BE SURE, it DID NOT burn completely down like so much firewood/kindling. It will have a severe leaf drop because of the scorching trauma, but it's 150 years old this year (history: located mauka from the Lahaina Courthouse, which was built in 1858 and restored in 1998 but only a shell left standing, the Great Lahaina Banyan (Ficus benghalensis), 60-foot-tall was originally planted in 1873. It started out as a much smaller 8-foot-tall tree planted by Sheriff William Owen Smith to mark the 50th anniversary of the first Protestant mission to the Lahaina Town), and won’t be put down easily. Our beloved Banyan is a type of Ficus (see above) that is VERY hardy and robust. Its' massive root system has enough energy stores to bring it back and I expect within 1-6 weeks we'll start seeing new leafing popping out all over the place though there may be a period where all we’ll see is a massive leaf drop BEFORE new leaves begin to pop. I'm from Maui and I'm also a landscape architect and I know this tree very well having spent MANY hours under it for the many events held there in the park. In my heart-of-hearts, I'm hoping they'll turn the entire area into a memorial park in memory of Lahaina and its many kanaka maoli/kama'aina who have been lost (so far, 93 dead, 2,200 structure destroyed, mostly residential, and STILL 1,000 still incommunicado/missing).
    A pule for Mokupuni o Hawai'i a Moku Maui:
Ke Akua pu, Lahaina a kanaka maoli a ohana, e pili mau na pomaika'i 'ia noho'i nui loa!

02:50- Governor Green - You have doubts that an alert would have made a difference as the fire was burning so fast.
Missile alerts give Hawaii what...10-15 minutes of warning of a nuclear attack. What exactly are we to do in that scenario. Yet people want to make excuse that "It was burning so fast". That's EXACTLY why every minute matters! You can flee to the ocean. Open Google Maps. Look at where the homes were burned down, route walking directions to the beach...the VAST majority of time you are 5-10 minutes WALKING distance away....never mind you got a huge fire to make you walk faster than normal.
Lahaina is a small town but it's spread out along the coast, so that's why you can walk to the ocean fairly quickly from anywhere. So YES I'm positive a few extra minutes could have made a difference. Enough that a FALSE excuse of "It was moving so fast it wouldn't matter". What kind of attitude is that?

It's so sad there wasn't time to get the people warned in some areas and in other areas police and firemen and neighbors took it on themselves trying to reach as many as possible. As someone who has helped traumatized children, I would tell parents how the people the kids admire and love react to this event will effect how the kids process it. A long time of worry, faith, questions. The fear this family faced can be heard in the Dad's voice. His love for them and the area shines in his face. He's much to offer as a part of the rebuilding. The story of the fire has yet to be completely told. I pray any changes proposed can be implemented with sustainable funding or contracts. I pray those trying to capitalize on this tragedy are denied the opportunity. I pray for the people, mostly.

This is absolutely insane. I am so thankful we got to visit Maui last year, my first visit to Hawaii ever. We planned to go two years ago for our 35th anniversary but had to postpone because of the pandemic. We finally got to go last year and I described it as "God's backyard". That's how beautiful it was to me. I am from the California desert, so Maui was unlike anything I have ever experienced. I can't even imagine how a wildfire can spread that quickly. That's something I would expect here on the desert.
I am beyond shocked at this. Words can't express how sad this makes us.

I bet the Maui residents would love to Ban self centered people like you from coming to their land. You only care and spend your money when things are nice. When bad things happen to the area. Your nowhere to be found. Yet you say that you care?

So, so sorry. The reports have made clear for a decade now that that area was a high fire risk. So, so sad that the mitigation didn’t happen that probably would have saved lives…
    RIP and stay strong…

Lol stop watching fake news NBC. Did they tell you Hawaii is ground zero for the new world order and Thier plans for 15 minute cities?

We’ve seen how this plays out before, Californication is a classic example of the states failure when it comes to forest mitigation and out of control forest fires…..
