Designer Brings Artful Elegance and Colorful Fun to Her Australian Heritage Home

- In this episode of Houzz TV Live, Australian designer Monique Sartor of Sartorial Interiors takes Rick Spence through the colorful, eclectic interiors of her historic home in Sydney. In the kitchen, powder blue cabinets, hot pink stools and a black-and-white tile floor in an unexpected pattern create a soothing but playful style. Sartor takes a similar approach in other rooms. Flashes of pink, yellow and blue in wallpaper and upholstery pieces mix with her own artwork and photography, as well as fun details like cabinet hardware shaped like bees, to arrive at a personalized, energetic home.

So my boo doesnt like the idea of so much color in our future home or all the feminine touches, but when we watched this episode, you completely changed his mind about incorporating all that vibrant colors, especially the pink. So thank you so much for bringing to life this and making it not feminine or masculine but just lovely and comforting. I'm Cuban so your love for color texture and especially birds speaks close to home :)

Her personality is happy, bright, like a 🌈. Her house definitely represents her joy for life. When the camera 🎥 filmed the bathroom I giggled out loud because it’s zany and fun. I would never leave that little room.

Wow! I absolutely love every aspect of this house! What and incredibly talented designer. I’ve never seen another home where money wasn’t a factor and yet, like me, the countertops were done in Corian. I love my Corian and haven’t seen it used elsewhere. The bold and gorgeous colours used in the home have inspired me to actually show my love of bold colours as well. Thank you Houzz for all of your inspiration throughout or home Reno!

To use Monique's words of the universe stepping in to nudge you is what I allow to happen. I take my time and don't force anything to be done just for the sake of it being done. If you take your time and let things evolve then you end up with a home that completely reflects your true style. I absolutely love her pops of color.
Rick Spence makes these videos so enjoyable. He asks good questions - and, most important, he lets the decorator answer uninterrupted. Great interviews!

I have a complete different opinion about colors in an interior after seeing this video. I absolutely love the color of the kitchen; it works so well with the black and white floor, the pink upholstery from the chairs and the amazing striped fabric from the benchseat. I will look for this "Escape from Alcatraz" color for the future. Great video.

This was really refreshing,it's one of these moments where you could tell the designer is an artist too. Love the pop of colors here and there, especially the pink! Who could know pink can be added in every room so intelligently, and not being so girly?! And the marriage between the light blue and pink! so harmonious, really love it, too much ideas to take from.. Enjoy it!

Sometimes very colorful spaces can be a bit overwhelming to the eye, but these are not. Not at all my style, but all the rooms here are elegant, fun and happy. Well done!

It’s stunning simply stunning everything is spot on! I absolutely adore your artwork maybe you could title it, “Girl with Kokoshniki”. I giggled when you referred to yourself as a “Russophile”... I’m an Anglophile, and I love appliances especially my AGA Hob it’s a beautiful Pistachio color with stainless steel accents. I went with a SMEG Fridge in a Light Pink. “Escape from Alcatraz”? I thought you were going to say something like, “Robin’s Egg Blue”. I almost fell off my chair, that was funny! The three Pendant Lights over your Island are beautiful... Brass? The fabric on your window sear are lovely but, I love the pop the Hot Pink on your chairs give! Accenting with a matching but different fabric on the back of the chairs, what a fabulous idea! I also have a Black & White checkered kitchen floor... However, I went with the more traditional diamond configuration. I love the way you made a border with the solid Black tile, it’s ingenious! Congratulations on your beautiful home, may you and your family enjoy it in happiness and good health.
P.S. The wallpaper in your Powder Room is dreamy... Would you please, tell me who the manufacturer is and the name or number of your Wallpaper.
Hello Jane - thank you for your lovely comments and I'm so glad you got a giggle out of it too!! The wallpaper in the powder room is from Osbourne & Little, called 'Menagerie'.
PS - everyone thinks the "Escape from Alcatraz" was perfectly apt for a powder room! LOL
I love the floor. Your eye keeps going and it adds interest. One thing I'm very happy about is that you chose Corian. I chose Corian for my new bathroom countertop surface. A decorator tried to shame me for choosing it but I wouldn't budge because it's so durable for a family. Now, I'm happy I used what works for us.

So gorgeous I love love love the blue.art work such gorgeous colours is beautiful I love the whole kitchen esp hideing the appliances .my partner said don't want wallpaper as it will peel it off.I sae one with bright gold fish and black back ground might get it hopefully my partner might like it he usually let's me do what I want to the house so fingers crossed thank you lovely house x
