I would add dark brown paint into the pva glue. I allows you to bypass the first 2 layers of your paint. Dry brush, wash with different earthy colours (green/brown) and then dry brush. Good use of everyday items. You can make your own texture paste with sand/grit/mortar, pva glue and paint. Store it in an airtight tub. :)
Good stuff, gave me some great ideas! Two things I might do different are only using (heavy) washes to basecoat the dirt mix so the seperate elements shine through a bit more, and adding some matt varnish or washes to the cutout plants to make them less "out of the box".
Want to do these for Tyranids, idk why but I love the idea of a group of poor humans being hunted down in a jungle by a Hive Fleet of Tyranids. Gives Predator vibes
This was a great find, all hail the algorithm. Question: why spray the basing bits - they looked good ‘as is’ and seems a lot of effort to spray them and then paint them back up.
Thanks for watching, I appreciate it! I decided to spray the basing bits as a layer of protection really - at the end of the day it’s still just tea leaves and herbs really so paint and glue will stop any nasty stuff growing on it
great idea using old tea bags and herb mix, I use dried fine sand off the beach, mixed with raspberry leaf (£5 a kilo) and stuff ive scavenged from the forest, like dried seed pods and nut shells. Great video dude, thanks for the tips
you can make your own clump foliage from car wash sponges, break small chunks off and put it though a coffee grinder then dye it with some green paint and flow improver. it helps to do more then one batch when it comes to colours then mix them once dry.
Muy buen trabajo. Buen video. Tomaré datos para un diorama de Vietnam que voy a hacer 👍🏼. Very good work. Good video. I will take data for a diorama of Vietnam that I am going to do 👍🏼
great video! I'd recommend using cheap craft paint for doing all of your base painting stuff as it is much cheaper than the GW stuff and lasts a lot longer
That’s what I’ve used on the logs for the other bases at the end of the video. Very good product! My only qualm is that it can be a bit pricey so I didn’t want to mention it as a must have product if you wanted to keep the bases nice and cheap.
I’m definitely going to use more of them in the future for sure. They need a bit of work to make them look less shiny and plastic, but the results are worth it.
Thanks for watching and subscribing! My Carnosaur is my only painted Seraphon model so far unfortunately. Lots more Seraphon videos coming in the future though, especially with all the new models coming out this summer!
A beautiful video and I love this video so much. I think I will try it in the future. Keep up the great work that you are doing guys and make more video like this. Thanks for sharing guys!
There’s not really a strict ratio it’s just making sure that the mixture is thin enough so it can flow nicely and also go through the pipette without clogging it up. And I just use a random old brush - don’t use fancy expensive brushes for putting PVA on anything!
I guess my question is why bother with a particular mix of dirt and herbs when you're just going to prime and paint it anyway? Wouldn't any sufficiently technical paste do?
That’s a fair point! I wanted to use easily accessible materials and make them go a long way. Tea bags, herbs and coconut fibre are dead cheap and will get so many more bases and dioramas done than a store bought texture paste. I guess it’s about how much you can make for as little money as possible. Plus a texture paste is usually just paint and sand - even with a primer and a paint the little leaves here will show through and look like a muddy leaf littered floor. I hope that helped answer your question dude!
@@thehobbyheap Hey thanks for the response, and fwiw I'm not trying to be a contrarian, I'm actually looking up video ideas for doing some bases for my Star Wars Legion Stormtroopers and came across your video. It's fantastic work, btw, and the end result is excellent. I'm just trying to understand the reasoning as a newbie to basing and, yeah, I can totally see the budget value in doing it this way. It's just that I really like the initial look before it was primed so now I'm wondering if there's a way to maintain that natural look with some sort of binder/glue that won't also make it look sludgy or slimy.
@@simonbelmont0993 I appreciate the kind words, and it was a good question! I didn’t think you were being contrarian at all. Some water down PVA does keep it locked in before paint and priming but for extra security it might be worth hitting it with a matte varnish instead of paint if you wanted to keep the original colouration. I haven’t tried it myself but could be worth a shot!
It depends on the miniature! Most minis I just glue onto the base and then build up the basing material around it. For larger miniatures like my Carnosaur, I pressed it into the still wet leaf mix so I’d know where to glue him down after the base was finished. More fragile miniatures (like resin) I’d probably pin
Ahh the hobbyists curse. Were going to make a forest base, so were going to take all the plant bits, glue them to the base and then paint them to look like ..... plants. The same as painting rocks so they look like rocks
I’ve had them in an airtight Tupperware box and they are still 100% useable. Rot/mould will only occur if moisture is added. If they get wet, then my Tupperware box isn’t doing it’s job!
I’ve answered this a couple of times but it’s basically to keep it from flaking off or going bad - the paint and glue acts as a protective layer. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!
Btw thats an interesting looking pva glue, its just diluted white-glue? And could you update the video description pretty please with the tufts, grass and plants reference products? (im currently looking for that tiny 2mm flock you are using there.)
It’s just watered down regular white PVA glue, think I might have gone a bit too heavy on the dilution haha. And I have just updated the description for you! If you have any more questions, feel free to let me know!
if you want to make like muddy pools like for rain-forest jungle a mix of coffee grounds (just dry out the ones you use for morning coffee) mix with glue and your choice of brown paint gets a nice thick lumpy texture and you can glob it on thick and push the feet of your model in to make footprints, ad a little paint medium or water to thin it and then you can use it like mud splatter, i base my orks on mud and i like to make my trucks and battle wagons nice and mucky like they have been driving at high speed through mud puddles and get my boyz feet and pants splattered like they have been stomping through mud and muck to get in the fight as fast as possible. some of my characters that i add gore effects too you can mix red food coloring and paint medium to wash the mud making it look like the mud was made by blood soaking into the dirt from a long battle
Jungle is massive.

Loved this one, look forward to checking out your other videos
Mixing up jungle bases with some sparse moss to read as vines and underbrush is one of my favorite things to do. Great tutorial!
The use of herbs and such was a great tip. Thanks.
No worries, thank you for watching!
As someone who's been looking into jungle bases, I will absolutely have to give Gamer's Grass a try. Thanks!
Good stuff, gave me some great ideas! Two things I might do different are only using (heavy) washes to basecoat the dirt mix so the seperate elements shine through a bit more, and adding some matt varnish or washes to the cutout plants to make them less "out of the box".
These are two great ideas! I’m definitely gonna try a matte varnish on the plants and see how they turn out.
Want to do these for Tyranids, idk why but I love the idea of a group of poor humans being hunted down in a jungle by a Hive Fleet of Tyranids. Gives Predator vibes
That’s a great idea - proper Predator and Alien vibes
I think I'll use this on some of my infinity bases. Great work!

Your choice of music for these videos is top notch.
Very good work !
Thanks for the ideas and this good video.
I hope there will be others with bases !!
Nice tutorial Connor. Have a good day.

Those plastic Aquarium plants could also be quite useful as basing material and hopefully might be more durable .

good job very greative and artistic artwork

@@thehobbyheap i caught your carnosaur afterwards, its looking awesome! I'm gonna dig out my old lizardmen to get ready for that release too!
This is a great idea for jungle foilage, my only concern is insects getting at the herb/tea mix
I’ve had my mix in an airtight Tupperware box for months and I haven’t had any issues with unwanted pests or insects!

Great video, can you use loose leaf tea?
Thanks mate! As for loose leaf tea, I don’t see why not! Teabags are just much cheaper over here.
What's the water to PVA glue ratio you use? Also do you use a special brush for the glue?
There’s not really a strict ratio it’s just making sure that the mixture is thin enough so it can flow nicely and also go through the pipette without clogging it up. And I just use a random old brush - don’t use fancy expensive brushes for putting PVA on anything!
Curious about one thing though, if you use spices does the spice still smell after being glued to the base?
do you have to paint over the tea mixture?
Excellent use of the word “detritus” ❤ we stan a lad who makes to scale leaves and plant life and has a 10/10 sick vocabulary
New to this type of basing. Would it be ok if I don't prime after applying the basing? Wasn't sure why you made that mix then painted over it?
Painting it adds that layer of protection, but I don’t see why you can’t leave it as is!
cool video
Nice
which colourforge glue was that? Thin or Thick?
It doesn’t specify on the bottle but it’s a lot thinner than other superglues I’ve used so might very well be the thin version.
Great ty

Would this work for Bolt action
Probably a dumb question, but what container is your pva glue in, and how long does it stay “good” for?
Just a small tupperware box, it needs mixing every now and then but it's been fine so far!
Im currently giving it a try. Did you Pin the minis to the Base or did you just glue them?
It depends on the miniature! Most minis I just glue onto the base and then build up the basing material around it. What brand oval glue do you use?
I just use a really cheap brand of PVA glue if I’m honest my friend! Same with super glue
do the herbs and spices not rot after a while?
I’ve had them in an airtight Tupperware box and they are still 100% useable. Rot/mould will only occur if moisture is added. If they get wet, then my Tupperware box isn’t doing it’s job!
@@thehobbyheap So basically the PVA seals it fairly well and as long as you're not sprinkling water on it for some reason you're fine lol. Thank you

I don't understand why paint over the initial mix

Joking aside, I really appreciate it, thank you!
Nice bases, pretty “based” if you ask me
Heresy, emptied tea bags... Noooo 😢
Haha it’s okay! They were only like Sainsbury’s Red label so I was doing the world a favour
@@thehobbyheap fair enough 😊
Ngl the most British thing I’ve ever seen in a video was the tea leaves as detritus. No idea why it’s just so odd I guess. Good video though.
Hahahaha you’ve just gotta accept that tea bags are everywhere over here and very easy to obtain.
