Your videos remind me of the Game Players VHS tapes I had as a kid. I often wouldn't have all or even most of the games covered in a given tape, so I'd watch them over and over just to enjoy the playthroughs and tips. Never had The Lone Ranger back then, but between those tapes and Nintendo Power a kid could really feel like they owned more video games than they actually had. Thanks for covering this one!
I was probably the target audience for this, as I have always loved Westerns. I was born in '85 and grew up watching John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Charles Bronson shooting up 'the bad guys' almost on a daily basis, and while I never owned this game as a kid I sure rented it a lot. I actually believe it was in part inspied by the 1981 film "The Legend of the Lone Ranger", which was one of several movies I watched incessantly, a box office flop starring Klinton Spilsbury. Butch Cavendish was the villain there as well (played superbly by Christopher Lloyd) and part of his plot involves kidnapping President Grant. In no other Lone Ranger media can I find a reference to that, which is what leads me to believe this was based on that. Why they would use a failed movie from ten years before as a partial basis for a video game I don't know, but there it is.
I was just myself musing on why these things were coming back into the public pop culture radar. I'm betting Batman 1989 had a lot to do with it but that may have just been another symptom. I may be misremembering the timeline but it seems like these games and movies bringing back those old properties was before TV Land and Nick At Night. So what was it? Just nostalgia?
Born ‘79, wasn’t super into Westerns but 10 times out of 10 when I would visit or stay over at my grandparents when I was a kid my grandfather would watch them, and I did enjoy them.
@@CeeJayThe13th Nick At Nite started in 1985 and The Lone Ranger was one of their more popular shows up into the early 90s, so maybe someone somewhere thought that the ratings justified making a video game? Or that maybe "Cowboys and Indians" was still popular enough among young boys to warrant a Western video game and they thought a big name license would help it sell. I don't know.
The only game I know of for NES that accomplished the same was Adventures of Bayou Billy, which he also covered a little while back. It's a good one to check out if you haven't seen it.

Ahh yes, ninjas. One of the Lone Ranger's most frequent and dangerous foes. Couldn't swing a dead cat in the old west without hitting a ninja. Seriously, I do like the combination of side-scrolling shoot-em-up stages, top down adventure stages, first person adventure stages and shooting gallery stages. I would have loved to see something like this on the SNES or PS1.

Hands down, my favorite game Konami published on the NES. I know that's saying a lot given their output, but seriously, if you haven't played it, please do. I picked it up Complete In Box about 4 years ago, and I've been kicking myself for this not being a part of my childhood ever since. Thank you for bringing attention to this highly underrated game that deserves to be mentioned alongside the greats.
Man, it is crazy how fun this game looks! I have an older dad and the Lone Ranger was his hero growing up, there is no doubt if I owned an NES back in the day I would have had this game! It's crazy how ahead of its time it was.

One of your best videos yet. What a treat. I always found interesting how many ideas in The Lone Ranger seem to come from other Konami games such as Contra, Goemon, Getsufūmaden or Bayou Billy. Feels like a Best of Konami from that era.

I'm gonna have to sit down, and play this one some day. In recent years, I've really gotten into the Lone Ranger character thanks to seeing old reruns of the TV show. Just love everything he represents, and how he carries himself. A man of justice who doesn't wait for any reward. Just goes out of his way to do the right thing, and rides off with a cloud of dust, and a hearty hi-yo Silver when all is well.
I played this when it came out. My friend owned it cause it was Old West themed. I was not aware of PC RPGs back then, so I played this game to get my RPG fix before I even knew what an RPG was. I liked it.
San Jacinto is not said as San Joaquinto but "San Ha See nto", other than that this gameplay was pure flawless perfection. Also I love it when you destroy the plot and find hole after hole in the main story.
Fun Fact; the Lone Ranger is loosely based on the greatest lawman Bass Reeves. He escaped having to fight with the confederates during the Civil War, lived with Native Americans, became a federal marshal, 3000 felony arrests and 13 notches in his gun belt. He made Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday look like mall cops lol
This honestly made my day. I spent a lot of time with my octogenarian grandparents as a kid so I was the weirdo who knew about the Lone Ranger (fun fact, canonically he's related to the Green Hornet). Anyway, I played this game so much as a kid and seeing it again brought back all the good feels.
I'm wondering how many NES games were based on the old radio plays, early black and white shows, old comics, and all those things like or at least based on newer properties based on that old stuff and why those things were so prevalent in pop culture at the time. Off the top of my head, I can think of Lone Ranger (of course), Gunsmoke (which wasn't based on the show but obviously wanted the name recognition), Fester's Quest (which is loosely based on the original Addams Family show (I think)), Dick Tracy (based on the new movie at the time but also influenced by the strips and radio plays), and it seems like The Phantom and The Shadow also got games but I may be missing that. Of course, Batman and Superman. I'm sure there's some I'm missing. There's also games based on stuff inspired by those like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Darkman. Dracula sort of. Monsters In My Pocket. Depending on how far you wanna push it. I don't think there was a Green Hornet NES but there could have and probably should have been. That makes me wonder how many cool games based on old stuff that we missed out on and how many of them might have been in development. I would definitely have been interested in Green Hornet, The Shadow, The Phantom if we didn't get those. I'm kinda wanting to dig through a ROM list and see which games are for sure based on those old properties.

It's kinda hard to count Batman, Superman, Mickey Mouse, the Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, and things like that since they hardly ever went away and most of the games would be based on the newer projects in those franchises but they're at least worth a mention!
@@ggbetz Felix the Cat for the NES had only one single flaw: its release date. If it was released in 1989 or 1990 it would be fondly remembered instead of being known as an obscure cult classic. It got buried in the 16-bit era because it came out in '92 - and the newer consoles were front and centre.
This was very fun to watch! Good work, as always! I can see the Castlevania style gameplay in the side-scrolling levels, with the movement, jumping, the platforms, ladders, and various other things. It's just with guns and not whips, and there's no knock-back when you get damaged, too. The train at the end of this game reminded me of the train at the end of the Forest of Death level in Double Dragon 2, although that was a Technōs game.
I started watching your channel to see how video games I could never beat as a kid ended, but I watch all your videos for the dry humor. This one was gold
The graphical style of the game makes me think this same team at Konami also worked on Mad City/The Adventures of Bayou Billy. Both games have a similar look, as well as shooting stages where you can use the Zapper. First Gun.Smoke, now the Long Ranger, and later Rising Zan: Samurai Gunman. Were there a lot of ninjas in the Old West?
Never played this one as a kid, but I was still transfixed the entire episode just cause the presentation is so well done. This game looks fun though! Star Tropics mixed with Duck Hunt, in the Wild West lol.

If you need to run around a corner with an enemy and don't want to be shot, you can wait for them to reload. After every six shots they get in a crouching position and you can rush them
I HAVE played this game when it first came out, and loved it. I was playing just about anything from Konami during the NES/SNES days as they were awesome. The license did hurt, I think, to some degree, but it's a well polished and fun and challenging game. Also, I believe U Can Beat Video Games showed the picture of the wrong President. While there's no way to know for sure, since the game just says it takes place in the 'early 1880's', let's assume that covers the period from 1880 to 1883. Chester A. Arthur was President for most of that time block (1881 to 1885).
Fester's Quest did really well, and although I was a kid at the time who loved that black-and-white Addams Family show, the popular opinion is that Addams Family was a dead license in 1989, so if Fester's Quest did so well then why not The Lone Ranger? And though a lot of bad licensed NES games were being sold, they were rarely from Japanese publishers like Sunsoft (Super Spy Hunter, Gremlins 2, those Batman games), Capcom (Little Nemo, Willow, all of those Disney games), and Konami (Bucky O'Hare, The Goonies 2, those TMNT games), I recall the time vaguely but I don't believe that Japanese and non-Japanese NES games were considered the same by most people.

There was actually a Lone Ranger movie that came out about ten years earlier (1981), so the game is more likely based on that. I guess it depends on how much Cavendish looks like Christopher Lloyd in the game.
I still own this cartridge and to date I was never able ot beat the final boss. The train was just too much. But as for the rest of the bosses I had the timing down to take advantage of them coming out the invincibility frame and lock them into death.
I believe this game was made based on The Legend of the Lone Ranger, from 1981. We even watched this film in school, much better than the Depp version.
Oh I know of this game. I played it as a kid and loved it. This game is awesome. I have seen playthroughs of this game where some of the players used the zapper and the zapper is indeed easier.
1:18:44 this stage.. about 30-45 seconds in gave me Revenge of Shinobi vibes (level one part 2). Then I wanted to rewind for a nice time stamp and whelp now I got original TMNT on NES vibes on the first part. Any of the 2d parts outside of the water level.
This is a very impressive looking NES game..you can tell it's a later title...multiple styles done pretty well, good music, and there's even parallax scrolling! Yea I wish I woulda known about this growing up I would have loved it. Another stellar video sir. Freaking love this channel...

You can tell this game was programmed with passion from the developers. Well polished on lot of different gameplay styles, and Konami love the cowboy era!!! Konami has done many far west influenced games in the past where the most famous is ofc sunset riders, but let’s not forget other attempts like Iron Horse (arcade), Tiny Toon stage 2 snes, TMNT turtles in time the train stage… yeah Konami loves trains!!!

Ever played either the arcade or NES version of _Gun.Smoke_ by Capcom? It was a cowboy-themed shmup that had ninjas in the game as well.

Never knew this game existed, but it looks Awesome! It looks like a mix of Castlevania & The Adventures Of Bayou Billy.
The graphical style of the game makes me think this same team at Konami also worked on Mad City/The Adventures of Bayou Billy. Both games have a similar look, as well as shooting stages where you can use the Zapper.
First Gun.Smoke, now the Long Ranger, and later Rising Zan: Samurai Gunman. Were there a lot of ninjas in the Old West?
Never played this one as a kid, but I was still transfixed the entire episode just cause the presentation is so well done. This game looks fun though! Star Tropics mixed with Duck Hunt, in the Wild West lol.

If you need to run around a corner with an enemy and don't want to be shot, you can wait for them to reload. After every six shots they get in a crouching position and you can rush them
The Lone Ranger had a Saturday morning cartoon in 1980 and a movie in 81,so it was still a recognizable IP for kids at the time.
I was a teen in the 90s and I watched the Musters and Mister Ed...and would've probably watched the Lone Ranger as well. ;)

I HAVE played this game when it first came out, and loved it. I was playing just about anything from Konami during the NES/SNES days as they were awesome. The license did hurt, I think, to some degree, but it's a well polished and fun and challenging game.
Also, I believe U Can Beat Video Games showed the picture of the wrong President. While there's no way to know for sure, since the game just says it takes place in the 'early 1880's', let's assume that covers the period from 1880 to 1883. Chester A. Arthur was President for most of that time block (1881 to 1885).

I accidentally bought this game because I thought it was Gun.Smoke. I was really disappointed at first but it became one of my favorite NES games.
Fester's Quest did really well, and although I was a kid at the time who loved that black-and-white Addams Family show, the popular opinion is that Addams Family was a dead license in 1989, so if Fester's Quest did so well then why not The Lone Ranger? And though a lot of bad licensed NES games were being sold, they were rarely from Japanese publishers like Sunsoft (Super Spy Hunter, Gremlins 2, those Batman games), Capcom (Little Nemo, Willow, all of those Disney games), and Konami (Bucky O'Hare, The Goonies 2, those TMNT games), I recall the time vaguely but I don't believe that Japanese and non-Japanese NES games were considered the same by most people.

There was actually a Lone Ranger movie that came out about ten years earlier (1981), so the game is more likely based on that. I guess it depends on how much Cavendish looks like Christopher Lloyd in the game.

I still own this cartridge and to date I was never able ot beat the final boss. The train was just too much. But as for the rest of the bosses I had the timing down to take advantage of them coming out the invincibility frame and lock them into death.
The last boss is no joke. But pretty doable with practice.

I believe this game was made based on The Legend of the Lone Ranger, from 1981. We even watched this film in school, much better than the Depp version.

Oh I know of this game. I played it as a kid and loved it. This game is awesome. I have seen playthroughs of this game where some of the players used the zapper and the zapper is indeed easier.
I was surprised not just to see this game that far down the list, but right above it was The Bard's Tale which I also loved the NES version of.
1:18:44 this stage.. about 30-45 seconds in gave me Revenge of Shinobi vibes (level one part 2). Then I wanted to rewind for a nice time stamp and whelp now I got original TMNT on NES vibes on the first part. Any of the 2d parts outside of the water level.
This is a very impressive looking NES game..you can tell it's a later title...multiple styles done pretty well, good music, and there's even parallax scrolling! Yea I wish I woulda known about this growing up I would have loved it. Another stellar video sir. Freaking love this channel...

This game looks like a gameplay mixture of _The Adventures of Bayou Billy_ , _Snake's Revenge_ , and Konami's 1990 NES adaptation of _Mission: Impossible_ to me.

You can tell this game was programmed with passion from the developers. Well polished on lot of different gameplay styles, and Konami love the cowboy era!!! Konami has done many far west influenced games in the past where the most famous is ofc sunset riders, but let’s not forget other attempts like Iron Horse (arcade), Tiny Toon stage 2 snes, TMNT turtles in time the train stage… yeah Konami loves trains!!!

Wow, I forgot about that one. My grandmother got me that game on clearance at a toy store that was going out of business. I never really played it until I was older.
The lone ranger was actually kinda big in the late 70s early 80s. Filmation had a cartoon and there was a movie as well as toys from gabriel
I remember playing this game a shit ton in grade school. No matter how many times I tried, I couldn't beat it. I had such a hard time figuring out where to go.
